After years of dithering, finally decided to get NMS.

NMS is basically more accessible. I don't feel cog blocked by NPC. I can go anywhere and do anything. Though that might require collection of mats it feels far less gated on its content than ED.I know everybody have their different views but, how I see it, NMS is no replacement/alternative/competitor to ED.
Originally, I hated its looks, but it has improved over time, and once I got free of that unconscious bias that told me "it's ED or NMS", I started loving it.
As I mentioned before, to me it's Subnautica on steroids. It's massive in scope, there's much freedom, but being an arcade game, there's very often a shortcut to do things faster.
And it's not about space at all.
Its main limit, for me, is that it works like a tank that gets empty over time: I always reach a point where I have maxed out everything, and at that point it becomes more like doing daily chores and it all becomes very samey, until a new update (or expedition) goes live, and the tank is topped up again for me to enjoy another hundred hours or so (which is a lot!).
I have thought about this, because it's something that several people have mentioned about ED, repetitiveness, perceived shallowness with the additional problem that updates for ED are very rare; and yet, I have never felt the tank empty, with ED.
NMS is tons and tons of fun, if one gets it in the right way.
But then it's the same with every game.
Hello!
It has already been an incredibly busy year for No Man’s Sky with the release of SENTINEL, LEVIATHAN, OUTLAWS and SteamDeck - and Switch, PSVR2, MacOS and more coming very soon!
Today, we are releasing what is probably our biggest update of the year (our 20th major free update). Perhaps fittingly we’re calling it ENDURANCE, and the focus is on freighters, frigates and fleets.
I know everybody have their different views but, how I see it, NMS is no replacement/alternative/competitor to ED.

Unfortunately it is not HOTAS friendly, and needs some workaround.Oh, i don't see it as a replacement for ED, i think i'll mainly derp around it in creative mode.
What I want to do is try and figure out whether to fly with HOTAS or controller, because with mouse is horrible.

Even with a HOTAS, however, I think the flying model would feel abysmal, it's too simplistic.

Hey I only invited one grass growing weirdo, bloody portal hopping weirdos get off the ship now...
And on iPad! Crazy what HG is doing. Next is cell phones, maybe even smartwatches...macOS version coming very soon. The contrast with ED could not be stronger. What ED is losing, NMS is gaining.
Whilst I appreciate the leap in technology, the more I see companies miniaturising their displays, the worse it gets in my opinion. And on iPad! Crazy what HG is doing. Next is cell phones, maybe even smartwatches...![]()
You're not wrong. I just played the new update on Steam Deck yesterday, and it's a bit straining for my eyes. I know my kids wouldn't have a problem doing it, but I have to plug in an external monitor and use glasses.Whilst I appreciate the leap in technology, the more I see companies miniaturising their displays, the worse it gets in my opinion.
NMS is not a game I would ever want to play on a tablet, Steam deck or otherwise stamp sized screen. The bigger, the better.
Yes, being on the move and all that jazz, but given how much I would miss in terms of visuals, I really don't see the point of it*.
* possibly, because as I get older, it becomes harder to see points, and all the other small symbols in general!
Yes, the flight model a big issue. If hello improves it with the next patches, the game will finally replace ED for me.Unfortunately it is not HOTAS friendly, and needs some workaround.

Exactly. I played NMS on PS at launch, and I kind of liked it but quickly got bored, and when Hello Games seemed to be doing a Houdini I lost interest. Recently I bought the game at a Steam sale and last week I finally got everything set up in VR (my Xbox controller was set to the wrong one in one of many menus I since gladly have forgotten).Yes, the flight model a big issue. Good news for TrollhunterX, it seems like you can encounter and hire the organic frigates in normal play now too. No need for the expedition reward.

What's interesting is that they're going more and more towards gritty and metal looking sci-fi instead of the Duplo style. The interiors of the freighters are looking more hi-tech and fancy. I'm excited to play again. Haven't played since last expedition. Took too much of my energy from the frustration of dying multiple times and starting over.
