So, would you guys at Frontier consider this? Would be nice to get a small bit of information for the patient members of this forum.

Yes, a developer blog is being planned for Frontier as a whole, and this will branch out to other projects. However, it's not something that we'll see for Elite until we get closer to beginning the promotional activity march forwards. Though I am hoping it'll start pretty early on in the cycle that is the games release.

Is that March forwards as in after Feburary or march forwards as in left, right etc..?

He He! I spotted that too:D

As for "beginning the promotional activity", you have got to be kidding Liquilla. I've never seen so much activity and interest across lots of different boards for a game that's not even released yet. All Frontier Developments needs to do is say "WE ARE GO FOR LAUNCH!!!!", and the fans will do the rest. It will be the cheapest ad campaign ever!

That's really good news, thanks for that! So now the Big Question becomes when will Frontier start the blog? And roughly how long would that development cycle take?

.....then we wont need to ask the other Big Question at all ;)

I've noticed that some games developers have these diaries/blogs as they are building their games. Because there is so much interest in Elite 4 I would think that having some sort of development diary or blog would be a great idea to keep people up to date on progress and other things. Even a sticky that is regularly updated could be placed in this particular part of a forum ( I'm actually wondering why the Elite 4 FAQ isn't posted as a sticky on here ) ?

Not only would any of these methods reduce the amount of similar questions asking about the games development status here amongst other things it could generate more interest in the game for first time visitors to the frontier web site. It wouldn't have to give too much away of course but I for one would be very interested in following the game's development as it progresses. Just small bits of info like what features are being successfully implemented, ones that have been binned etc or even some screenshots here and there or a small video on occasion. Time is obviously a factor in maintaining a diary/blog/sticky so no-one expects an essay or anything :). I realise that frontier may want to keep development completely tight lipped until release though but it's worth asking I suppose. I think everyone understands that frontier can't promise that certain ideas will make it to release and risk disappointment but other developers seemed to have managed well with their blogs. Maybe only posting about things that have been implemented and tested out would be wise in this case then.

It'd be great if they actually intended to work on this game... Until proven otherwise it's the Duke Nukem of space games...

I was on the Bioware forums when they did the first thread for Dragon Age. Despite my burning desire, way back when the game was announced, I have yet to generate the interest in actually buying the game. I suspect it's just from burn-out from eager anticipation that couldn't be maintained for the whole project.

So, I think you're right in not hyping the game for years before it's released. Not that I actually believe you're writing it until there's an official announcement made.

>_>

couldn't really disagree more..

the anticipation of Elite IV is legendary. the anticipation turned excitement (as in, "right after Outsider, you say?" "within the next decade, you say?") screams early stages developer-blog, plz! plz! plz!

C'mon. we're talking about a community of fans who've been following/playing/hacking/enjoying these games for well over two decades.. what better way to spend the next couple years, while the rightful successor is being developed, than to watch the developer blog about it.. I mean, who gives a poop about Dragon Age? Does it have such a long and noble lineage as Elite?? Not really, no. Excitement petering out over DA's development?? Not a huge surprise.

IMHO, the Elite IV dev blog would be far better than the silent, long, uneventful wait..

Completely agree, though it needs to be planned and then initiated at the right moment in the development cycle :) Releasing information too early can often be more detrimental than staying silent.

I think as long as there is a clear understanding that this is a blog regarding the development of E4, that it is not open to discussion and/or debate regarding the course that it's taking and that most importantly that the contents of it are not representitive of the final product, then it should be ok.

Of course you can say that till you're blue in the face, there are still going to be numpties out there that can't read a disclaimer... the key is that they are not representitive of the majority.

Is there a Dev blog for The Outsider? That's obviously a lot further along it's development cycle (sigh) and arguably in more need of publicity than E4. I remember a while ago it was slated for an early 2010 release but I'm guessing that's slipped?

Not as of yet. We've gone quiet with The Outsider until we're ready to begin fully promoting it, but Developer Blog activity will be a part of this drive :)

Thanks Liquilla. Ok, I've tried every way to squeeze a possible date for E4, now I can't even manage it with The Outsider!! It's been a while in development: I remember screenshots a couple of years ago. I can only hope that the physics, game engine, AI etc will all port across straight to E4 so it will come out a few weeks later? ;)

Wow after all this time it's STILL 100% yes?! Just...wow. Anyway I'm new new here, this is my first post, I've been waiting for E4 since around 2000 and even sent in a long letter to Frontier back in 2001 0r 2002 that they were nice enough to respond to. I've waited patiently since then, not waiting to bother anyone and even pushed the game complete out of my mind for a good few years, but now I think its about time that I'd like to very humbly stand up and say, yeah, some kind of regular updates would be apreciated.

An offical Elite 4 launch party?

Given the scale of anticipation for this game I think that if an official launch party was announced nearer the time, with a big venue booked and the chance to buy a sighed copy of the game by DB and other developers a week or few days before it actually goes on sale, along of course with the chance to meet and chat to everyone who was involved, the most dedicated fans brining various Elite stuff they've made over the years to show off and of course a MASSIVE screen with a chance to actually play the game ect, then I defiantly think a few thousand would show up easily.

I know such an event would take a bit of effort and money to organise, although you could charge for tickets and I still think people would come, the key would be to advertise it months in advance and the info would circulate across all the various gaming news websites.

This is a strange idea I know and one that would probably be better to be raised on facebook but still what do people think?
