Merope...

One of the Pleiades, companions of Artemis, turned into stars to get away from Orion's pursuit.
Also called The Lost Pleiad, who turned her face away out of shame for marrying Sisyphus - who escaped from Tartarus and, upon his return, got punished for trying to outsmart the top deity.

The tale of the eternal rolling guy feels like a suspicious parallel to Satan on Paradise Lost (down to Hell being called the same!), as tenuous of a link as it has.

I think the axis is essentially the connection between the known (earth) and other realms (heaven, hell, etc…). It is a connection to the divine – and both the source of life and death. There is a reason the Fates/Norns/Death are associated with it. It is the path of souls to their afterlife as well as to their new lives on earth – as well as the path to enlightenment (when looking up) – the path to Salvation… The path be it up or down is a spiral, like threads on a rope or vines or roots…

Badly paraphrasing from Coomaraswamy: The Sky and Earth relate to one another like the roof and floor of a house. With the bowl of the sky overhead and the inverted bowl of the earth below – connected by an (invisible) pillar, be it of fire, or light or the Tree of Life the only way up and down is this axis in which all the worlds revolve. The axis is the pillar of sacrifice and the foot of the pillar the “navel of the earth”. The Sun is more than just the capital of the pillar but also the Pillar itself.

Also... There are a series of myth-types associated with the axis. The Dying and Rising God, as well as the Hero Quest come to mind. There are creatures that Guard the axis and the entrances… as well as the life giving fruit/milk/root/chalice…. The boon for completing the quest.

I think that there are several axis's going on here - there could be alignments for each of the races as well as that of the galaxy as a whole. I believe there is an interactive element between the three inputs of Human Thargoid and Guardian as well. With the overarching axis of the galactic center of course.

We started off with three paths and three “powers”. Looking at the powers – the Alliance, The Federation and The Empire. Their home worlds line up generally on their own axis (a line between Alioth and Achenar passes 5 ly from Sol (a little closer to Sirius even)). Achenar especially having a considerable number of underworld related stars surrounding it…. Alioth being a northerly star in the Great Bear… Callisto (Princess of Arcadia who spirals around the Pole Star). And well Sol… in the middle.

We move on to the three species of our galaxy. Humans, Guardians, and Thargoids. Well humans… thats us with our particular Axis that we are searching for. Guardians are the utopian society of Plato that is fatally flawed due to its own structure. Their beacons are symbols of the axis and the AI that they created were an attempt to transcend to a higher plane (Human aspect would be Antal and his digital consciousness). I am not sure of any alignment there yet.

Thargoids… I think of thargoids as the Lovecraftian element. The Thargoids have a definite axis - the line between Merope and Col 70… The importance of Merope to the Thargoids has been emphasized – what it means I still have no clue. The Thargoid Devices are also Axis symbols… Even the recent teaser video showing pillars of light with spiraling thargoid tendrils…. points to the Thargoids as Guardians of whatever it is we need to steal from the Axis/Tree of Life. The Thargoids are the snakes/dragons we are meant to fight....

Could this relate to the Toast ?

Polaris is Important....

I have been thinking of Drew and his Veils… even though things ended how they did… I am wondering if it has to do with the idea of the Veil of Isis…. The trope being that Isis (often associated with Artemis) is identified with Nature and hidden secrets… and lifting the veil is the metaphor for achieving enlightenment… either through spiritual methods … or science….

Which brings me to the Space Inbetween…. “No faith alone can unlock their prison, but science has the key. The elder ones await our discoveries with keen hunger.” And then there is Salvation… I assume he already unlocked the prison….

Empire, Guardians, Hell
Federation, Humans, Earth
Alliance, Thargoids, Heaven

Which could explain why the Brookes tour crosses both the Pleiades and Synuefe regions!

An Order / Balance / Chaos alignment could be easily drawn as well, but it'd place Order in Hell and Chaos in Heaven, which is... definitely unusual.

Simulacrae's thoughts above on the Axis Mundi resonate with something from Rochester's recent posts, specifically the line "The axis is the pillar of sacrifice and at the foot of the pillar the "navel of the earth" ". (My emphasis). Together these suggest looking below the lost realms area, following the axis that passes through the Axis Mundi system from Sol.

I guess this means looking for systems that are as close to that axis line as possible (rather than making the journey in supercruise in the Axis Mundi system). This also reminds me of the way the Zurara was found to be surprisingly precisely aligned with the Reorte-Riedquat line.

Right now my mouse is acting up and the replacement is due in a few days, so I am out exploring the edge of Barnard's Loop looking for more Guardians sites but when I have it this will be my priority. (Though I am still not sure how to look, I shall at least look with what wits I have.)

Well, I just crunched a few numbers here...

The closest system I found to that imaginary line is Col 285 Sector VT-I c9-12, at a mere ~0.218ly off and quite far below in the galactic plane with y=-260.8125.

EDIT: only now I realized that, since this line passes through Sol, it's far easier to go by galactic coordinates...

Be wary of ‘traditional’ lines of sight and directional alignment, we don’t necessarily know where to look in relation to various fixed points!

But I agree Raxxla, ‘This pendent world’; may very likely hang below the lost realms / axis mundi.

Point being, during my studies into the Yggdrasil construction, and recently the Lost Realms area, I’d seen enough correlating evidence in game to conclude that potentially the axis maybe shifted and the ’tree’ tiered.

This corresponds I’ve observed with various other deity systems, such as the Greek or Celtic pantheons, to name but two; which all seem to fall upon this shifted axis and to my eye likewise tiered!

I attribute this axis to be that set by the ‘in game’ Greek compass!

OK, so is the axis really Helios ----> Axis Mundi or is it Boreas -----> Axis Mundi? I know it's tricky to tell from a 2D map like yours but I can see the tiering when I'm in the Galaxy Map, though I find it hard to follow a course that's at an angle. I guess that's by design, so we don't just move the map down and hit the right system too easily! I also don't want to go too far down, as I think it's going to be somewhere amongst the Lost Realms - obfuscated in the outer rim but not beyond it, so to speak.

A part of me feels that Raxxla should be in a named system (though it would not surprise me if it wasn't). Looking at the meta picture tells me two things: firstly, that from the in-game role-played perspective, someone named all these systems for a reason and that is to hide something that might be obvious if there was only one, secondly; from the author's perspective it has to be a fitting tribute to Robert Holdstock and a procedural name for the system with Raxxla would not accomplish that as well as a suitable mythological theme. (There's a paradox here as I think about it - the naming of systems is our clue that something is here yet the fact there are so many also obscures the target!)

I'm going around in circles here, so I'll give it a break, do straightforward exploring whilst my mouse is not working quite right, and go looking again when I get back to the Bubble.

I was thinking on how we have a few convenient markers around the outer rim: the Titans!
Two of them, in fact (Thor and Leigong) are located below the lost realms area, so they might work as very rough indicators.

But then you still have the problem of the Empire spending on the planets all the creativity they lacked for naming themselves...

Any Axis Mundi has to pass trough Earth. That is what axis mundi is. That means that any single point in space can be on the axis mundi, if we want it to. Finding more than one point, is when we start to limit our options. Two stars with near perfect alignment to Earth are what we call optical binaries. Stars that aren't close to each other, bu appear in the same spot, in the sky.

Going by Miltons model of the cosmos, Earth (and the universe around it) is at the end of the pendant. Earth is the center and the pendant is an axis mundi. If we follow this axis 'up', we should reach a gate. This gate leads out of the regular universe and if we continue 'up', we get to heaven.
The same gate should also make it possible to enter hell, but hell does not seem to align with the axis.

If we assume that Raxxla is the gate, we should look towards what we think might be heaven. Looking towards hell does not help, in the Miltoian model.

Thargoids decided the exploration data I held, though of low monetary value was too much to ignore.

My Cobra III has had incident interdicted while travelling between systems near merope. While I was lucky this time and very happy my insurance was covered. The data I had found is lost.

A good hypothesis; I had postulated a similar theory here some time ago.

There are a number of very ‘Wyrd’ systems which could fall along such a Miltonian axis. I ultimately rejected the hypothesis as I theorised it too reliant upon Milton as a primary source and therefore prone to scholarly bias. It also does not correlate with Miltons idea of incorporating a bridge / viaduct which ought to set down very close to the area of the gate.

It’s a logical conclusion, but if my assessment of the Lost Reams is correct, why would the Codex point us down towards a very densely packed area, only to then point us up, granted with very little indication. I could really dig getting behind this but in my opinion the theory needs Lucifers Viaduct to work.

I would be very happy if this concept could be proven correct. But I suspect Brookes took inspiration from various sources to create something unique. The book / tattoo would suggest a trip down then up, or is it more left, to right and up?

Remember there is a system called ‘Fall’ and it’s position in relation to pandemonium, and likewise that of Demeter and Persephone, might indicate it’s intentional.

The position of the apex if correct might not be so clear and open to interpretation in my opinion, however I’m very aware of the existence of the system’Bridge’ which I find highly suspicious and if applicable, whose only existence denotes a path to the gate?

The idea that Earth, Raxxla and heaven all align with the axis mundi and hell does not, is of course fully dependent on accepting Miltons 'geography'.
The axis mundi going through Earth, is not. If it doesn't, it isn't an axis mundi.

The hints we have for an earth axis are rather vague. I would say that the following, can be interpreted in that direction.

1. Silent song of the spheres can be seen as a pointer to Kepler's Earth-centric model of the universe. This is also the traditional Greek model.
2. Spiralling stars may point to some rotational axis.
3. Pendant world directly describes the placement of Earth as directly below heaven.
4. Axis mundi is a system in the game.
5. Delphi, the traditional Greek 'start point' for the axis mundi, is a system in the game.
6. Plenty of other systems that can be linked to world trees, i various religions.

Of these hints only the Spiralling stars and the Pendant world, can be directly related to Raxxla.

Tend to agree and disagree, but this is where our interpretations may conflict with those intended by FD, the subjects utilised or referenced are not wholly definitive, that is inherently true, mythology is not singular, there usually are several sources and interpretation of these.

We need to interrogate all possibilities and look for any logical associations, which may identify a common correlation.

This is where my current hypothesis is , that FD has utilised and developed a unique Holdstock concept, in honour of that author, because he was the person to introduced Raxxla to the elite narrative. It was not created by Braben no Bell.

My hypothesis is tied around the Lost Realms discovery, but also various indicators that reflect his other Celtic influences.

I like the Miltonian concept but, ultimately it’s too limited, and logically once you figure out one segment the rest ought to follow, this doesn’t seem to be the case; it could still be - ‘if’ FD interpreted the science and the abstract nature differently, or just decided to do their own thing.

1. Silent song of the spheres: is likely a reference to the music / harmony of the spheres, as attributed and adapted by Milton to describe his Miltonian universe. https://darknessvisible.christs.cam.ac.uk/music.html

2. Spiralling stars: I’ve no idea.

3. Pendant world: is a direct quote of Paradise Lost and ‘Eden’ aka Paradise, aka Creation, not necessarily just ‘Earth’ as this land mass existed only as a concept in Paradise Lost, the focus was on the garden. But the universe’ was technically the pendant world too. Eden in Paradise Lost, existed within a spherical shell, that contained all other spheres, all stars etc. Outside of this was Heaven, Chaos and Hell.

Satan saw ‘creation’ aka the hard physical shell, hanging below the walls of heaven, as if from a golden chain, it shone in beauty like a small star, in comparison to the magnificence of Heaven, as if viewing a star next to the brilliance of our moon.

Satan walked and wandered lost on this shell, walked past the paradise of fools, before seeing heavens gate on the horizon like a burning jewel. He reached the apex and stood on the first step of the retractable golden stair, aka golden a golden chain, before looking down, through all the spheres and seeing first hand all of creation. He then flew down to Eden, via our Sun at an oblique angle, like a shooting star, passing numerous ‘other’ Edens.

Robert Holdstock calls Eden a Lost Realms, the abundance of similar systems in the Lost Realms area, may advocate FD / Brookes adaptation shows Eden is not actually Sol in game…but could be elsewhere?

My hypothesis is that Brookes did not replicate a Miltonian universe, but merged it with a Celtic concept of an ‘Otherworld’ which is more in kerping with Holdstocks works, which focus upon this concept as well. A great tree over a fulcrum, acting as a doorway.

4. Axis mundi: is a system in the game, true but it’s also in the Lost Realms zone, with systems obviously named after references to Holdstocks works, and linking those to the Codex, it also sits directly below Yggdrasil and Persephone etc, it has significance!

5. Delphi: traditionally has three of more conflicting classical source origins. Only one is attributed to an axis mundi, the others are more complex. I do not discount it, but would argue it acts as a narrative marker, and significant clue pointing towards the Lost Realms.

6. Plenty of other systems that can be linked to world trees, and various religions: absolutely true… but I would argue I’ve identified enough evidence to suggest (not definitely) their placements are intentional and they all have a shared relationship in game?

The system names around Axis Mundi (including Axis Mundi) seem to be based on this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mythological_places

Summerland, Lyonesse, Quivira, Thule and Asphodel are very close. Almost all the other places from that list are located in the 100-135 ly below the galactic plane region of the bubble. It's hard for me to see that Holdstock's Lost Realms have been used as a source at all.

Don't forget there is part of the Raxxla mythos whereby the Talmor Lens (presumably what makes the Omphalos Rift operate) is misbuilt on Earth. There is the Lakon Spaceways Transporter (modern iteration Type-6 Transporter) that originated at Earth. Further, Lavian Brandy is made in oak barrels imported directly from Earth. Sol is the most important system in the lore. Even the original The Dark Wheel novella with the first game had Alex Ryder awarded with a flight over London as an award for top scores on the Sim-training.

Sol is the most lore important system in all of the Elite Universe as everything else depends on its existence. Even Lave is based a real star in the same galaxy as Sol.

Faraway as it currently exists was humanity rebuilding the Talmor Lens. The infrastructure of The Pilot's Federation is wholly dependent on what humans rebuilt. The components are all present and very well known.

  • Orbital stations (especially the large antenna)
  • Orbital outposts (again massive antenna)
  • Surface Ports and Settlements
  • Surface Installations
  • Artificial power sources
  • Artificial structures
  • Myriad array of engineering components and data
  • Our ships form ad-hoc components of the larger network. See Guardian Logs - Technology log. CMDRs are integrated via implants allowing telepresence, galaxy wide comms, and remotely controlling our fleet carrier, ships, SRV, SLFs, and everything else. Seo Jin-ae isn't the only Seraph. That was Project Thunderchild and every CMDR is either a genetically enhanced human, cyborg, or android (look at eyes 👀 in Holo-Me).

We found Raxxla by finding ourselves. Getting to understand the intergalactic travel part is the next stage of this. That and understanding what and where Omphalos Rift is located.
