Dad Lando is the best. This guy kind of sums up a good part of the community imho.

Something to agree on. Props to dads like this. Older guy at a video game convention supporting his son.

My dad, not so much.

Even DS praised the parts of Citizencon that honored the community. Sure poked some fun at some of the videos players made, but he was very clear that it was a good thing, the right thing, and nice.

From that article...

"there’s a new ship coming that you’ll be able to buy for $750"

I dunno, I just can't get over it. I don't know how to put it into words, but as someone whose first console was made wood and has gamed since it began, I just don't know how to react to such a sentence!

I'm lost for words, I'm laughing at how ridiculous it is, but at the same time there's a side of me that still thinking it can't actually be real.

$750 or ~£600 for a spaceship in a computer game, wft man, seriously wft.

Absolutely bonkers isn't it. And the thing is, they will probably only ever see them in a jpeg.

I'm a little concerned that the "mouse brigade" section of the avocados may spoil things for those of us who like Joystick/HOTAS.
I recall getting blasted for criticising the FM when 0.8 dropped (I just didn't get it did I? And, it's just a pre-Alpha), and being laughed at for using a HOTAS (paying out £200, when a £5 mouse is better).
Don't start me off on the Freelancer-style manual gimbal aim....
Anyway, I have been left with the impression ever since, that the space flight portion of the game will always pander too heavily towards mousers wanting a casual experience.
We shall see.....

V 0.8 is why I decided to sell some ships and back Elite at Premium Beta and hedge my bets. That hedge has paid off as hopefully I get a refund and if so then probably end up getting the rift as I've put my computer through the paces and it can render Elite at 150FPS in stations and over 200 in space when not v-synced.

I wish.

*sigh*

On the other hand, Ben worked on Elite before his betra... I mean, before he went to work with Foundry 42, and I personally find it very easy to believe that game development is pretty much 90% of the time.

Pretty much. I've sat with some and heard all kinds of tales of woe and mirth, especially on bigger games. I'm sure Elite is not much different. But the fact is Elite is a released game that's got considerably better in the last 12 months.

Star Citizen, not so much.

Sooo...a week since the start of Citcon...any word from CIG? Any release window for 2.6?

EDIT: I understand that their recent media release was about offices or some such.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Noooooooooooooooooo !

That was just twice. You got to say my name three times to force me to appear.

Frank is a Scot :)

I was born there but lost the accent long ago :(
I'm Scottish too :D

I can't wait to pilot my Freelancer and soar the 'verse - just me and my sporran :D

There's a lot of it about. There are enough Scots to fill a function room at Psykokow's local bar... And all of them have got better voices than me.

Slightly OT, but
You are hired for my research team!
Nice find.

To knowles2, they won't launch just 2 more franchises, FD wants to be a large publisher making their own games. They could launch one new franchise a year or every couple years from here until . . .

I just hope FD take some of the Planet Coaster billions and hire a few more ED devs as a thank-you for ED funding PC development. Just sayin.

Same here.

I think there some confusion here, franchise is a collection of games using the same name, Elite is one franchise, Planet is another, Elite: Dangerous and Planet Coaster are just single games in that franchise.

So frontier may only ever have 4 franchises but they will keep producing games under those franchises, think Elite: Racers or Planet Safari,

Nice furniture. Nice airfare+expenses to get that group together.
Backer money "for the game".
Have you seen the FD offices?

Well, I always find it funny that people attack CIG for "nice furniture". Please tell me how many programmers would love to work 80+hr weeks in a miserable workplace. The answer is none.

But on the other point sure, its not cheap to fly people over + put them up for whatever amount of days there is.

Thanks for sharing!

The more I try to understand any of that, the more hopelessly lost I get.

Well, from what I think I saw, it looks like they are in a process of re-writing a lot of the animations/getting them down and that is what looked off because they were not done on time hence why they decided not to show it. I bet they will show it in the November stream, but then it's CIG and as soon as you mention a date its guaranteed to be blow by 3 months.

Edit:

Also what I found hilarious was Ben's comment on a "delayede game" saying at 18:00 time mark. No, just because you delay a game does not guarantee it will be good. There are countless games out there that are proof of this, also Kickstarter games in general, only a small fraction of all project actually ever end up being finished. Not that this will be the case for CIG. But just want to say that it does not matter if you delay a game, 1, 2, 3, 5 years, if the underlying gameplay and mechanics is not good, the game will never be good and no amount of time will solve that.

The ATV released today shows just how down to the wire the Squadron 42 demo got before they decided to axe it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRsF6_lwLas
People talking, people talking, people talking, same CitizenCon demo(ish but nicer)

I really don't care about the script anymore. I think it's been well established we can't trust what they say - was there a point in that video where we can see the Sq42 demo that I missed? I mean it's been quite a while since the con-show now and they've had time to deal with those few issues that caused them to *just* miss it right?

So we can see it right?... I'd love to see it. Show me it so I can believe there's anything worth actually listening to in that video

ps. is that title frame even in the video anywhere? i just did a more detailed swipe and I can't see it

I just watched the latest reverse the verse-special edition and it was kind of interesting to watch CR, Erin Roberts, Tony Zurovec, Brian Chambers, and John Erskine talking about the current and future state of the SC....to cut the chase around 20 min in they start to talk about the networking and how many players we could expect per instance in the "near"future so let me quote CR:

"So it’s really more just about the fact that there will be a limit to how many players we can simulate on one server. Right now it’s 24 in Arena Commander and it’s about 40 when you’re running around Arc Corp. Really, that’s actually 8 instances running on one server. So, if you just times it by 8 and figure it out we could have 200 players if we could scale the game linearly that way but right now we can’t because it’s not – parts of it are built for multithreading and distributing to all of the cores but some aren’t. That’s what we’re doing a lot of refactoring on, so an individual server instance could perhaps run 200 players which then is obviously a lot denser than what we have right now and you would still seamlessly go between locations. But, on top of that if you can mesh those servers together and each server is authoritative over a group of players and generally those players would be based on colocation and each server tells the other servers what it has done with the players it’s responsible for. You can sort of, on a peer-to-peer basis on the server side, you can have thousands of players being simulated all at once but each server is only doing the work for its little portion. That’s the new model, we’re not the only people that are working on this or trying to work on this. It is the new model of using the big – using the cloud to give you a lot more game experience and that’s where we’re going. At some point, you know, we may even – that may allow us to have 2,000 people in the same area or whatever but what if there was maybe 10,000? At that point we probably would still have to instance."

20:00 min start

So Wow....Is this really going to work???Well if this work.....then we certainly can expect kind of revolution in the near future gaming...right???Or CR just talking to talk???Or maybe it is the truth that will happens in +few years...or beyond the 2020??
