This game is freaking amazing!

FOV certainly could use tweaking, it's annoying to be banking after an enemy and I can't see if my throttle is in the blue or not due to the screen's edge.

Next-gen consoles will close the gap to PC with hardware ray-tracing, SSDs and an overdue jump in CPU performance.

But, I may just stick with my XBox One X and 4K gameplay it offers for this and other games.

Pc architecture is advancing too. The gap in performance will never be closed.

However, speaking only about ED, it's possible that with next gen consoles it will narrow a lot, considering that this game is not one of the most demanding.

Having said that, for me the biggest handicap for consoles in Elite Dangerous is not the performance, but the control method.

Not enough buttons, not enough axes.

Now imagine the shadow and lighting fidelity we could have if Cobra was rebuilt for raytracing... One day the performance to do it will be there - one day... :7

Did you move back into your old home station? I did when I joined the master race, but now I’m looking for a new home. Something with VO’s and res sites on the doorstep, with an Anarchy system 1-2 jumps away.
I was working BGS in a specific region of the Bubble on PS4, someplace "out of the way" that I picked for the purpose of experimenting and learning. I also have a "base" near the Bubble's frontier for my "beachcombing" exploration expeditions. Now that I'm starting over, I'm operating closer to Sol with the goal of exploring inside the Bubble to find interesting sights instead just tagging undiscovered planets. I'll still be BGS-minded, but I don't see having a dedicated home system, but rather a sphere of influence.

One of the reasons I like ED over other space games is the approximation of our Milky Way, and I like operating in systems that I can actually see IRL in my night sky, especially as winter approaches and the night sky is becomes a hobby of mine. This is why Colonia really doesn't interest me, as that's more "fake space" than the "real" space inside the Bubble of cataloged stars.

Try setting the display to 120Hz and bringing the graphics down to high/custom. You could well push 120fps with that GPU. In Elite, the difference isn't that pronounced, but in other games, especially fast-paced ones, the increase in fluidity is really noticeable.
I made a change yesterday and upped the locked framerate to 72 fps, half of my display's default 144 hz (I prefer vsync on). This still uses less power than uncapped, and it gives me a slight bump in framerate (close to the Rift S) and also makes it quicker to switch between desktop and ED since the display doesn't have to switch refresh rate.

Help a noob out please? What is this BGS, and what are it’s uses?
I find it convenient to have place to lay my head, or transfer all my crap to.

BGS - BackGround Simulation. The day to day changes to which faction is in charge of which system. Things like mission running, trading and combat all affect the populatrity of the various factions in a system. To some people it matters.

BGS stands for Back Ground Simulation and loosely refers to the code responsible for changes in thinks like economy, faction state, etc. When people talk about "playing the BGS" they're referring to deliberately performing in-game actions (running missions, trading, killing NPCs, etc) to affect the standing of their preferred minor faction in order to help them expand into other systems. Note - this is not be confused with Powerplay which is somewhat separate and is more like a game of Risk affecting the dominance of the major powers within the game.

Not just factions, but also superpowers, which is what matters to me. I see the Galaxy Map as a giant 3D game of Othello :D

I've been an Xbox player for a few years now. Some time ago I paid for an alt account on Steam with the intention of saving it for a rainy day. After some surgery yesterday I've been consigned to bed so, armed with my trusty laptop, today has been that rainy day.

Good points -
  • I can see clearly! No more leaning forward squinting at the TV to see whether I'm 8 seconds or 6 seconds from my destination
  • Keyboard input! No more relying on the snail-like Xbox on-screen keyboard (or using the Smartglass app which crashes every ten minutes)
  • Voice attack! Even the free version with 20 commands is a revelation for switching out pip settings without having to take my thumb off anything else

Bad points -
  • My laptop is old and creaky and fps is low even on reduced graphics settings
  • I now want to spend lots of money I don't have on a gaming PC
