This game is freaking amazing!

Try setting the display to 120Hz and bringing the graphics down to high/custom. You could well push 120fps with that GPU. In Elite, the difference isn't that pronounced, but in other games, especially fast-paced ones, the increase in fluidity is really noticeable.
I can hit 144 fps in space, and it won't go below 100 elsewhere (though I didn't try RES) in Ultra settings, but I couldn't see much difference in ED. Frame rate only matters if the pixels change during the interval between one frame and the next, which I don't think I'm exceeding in ED unless I fly 10 meters off the surface at full throttle in a Courier looking sideways. However, the difference in power consumption (and thus fan noise) is quite noticeable, and this is why I decided to lock in at 60 hz / 60 fps.

Now if I ever decide to buy Overwatch for PC, then I'll be enjoying all 144 hz that this monitor supports :D

So does that mean the EBL crusade is over?
I should probably change my signature! Shadows do look a bit rubbish in my beloved Dolphin, even in ultra settings, but it's not enough of an issue to start a new meme over. If I'm going to crusade for anything, it'll be for native DS4 controller support in ED.
Now you can buy a VR headset and join my crusade for the missing orbit lines in the FSS. I need someone like you for this crusade! (y)

BTW glad you have come to PC.

Consoles are nice because they represent such good value.

With that said, an ASDA smart price cola is also good value. Does it taste nice though? Let's just say I speak from experience when I say it is the most disgusting liquid ever.

PC is the root beer that I drink at weekends.

Well consoles while being less powerful than gaming pc's have the advantage of being an unified architecture. This permits, expecially to games being exclusives to one platform, to deliver some impressive results given the price of the hardware.

There are some games around that are platform exclusive that are mindblowing. Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, GT sport are just some examples.

However, Elite Dangerous is a PC game at heart, that has been ported on consoles, and in this case the story is entirely different.

Did you move back into your old home station? I did when I joined the master race, but now I’m looking for a new home. Something with VO’s and res sites on the doorstep, with an Anarchy system 1-2 jumps away.
I made the move from PS4 in February and I don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon. I pilot my ship a lot better with the HOTAS than the controller. Not that the controller was bad, I’m just a lot smoother in combat.
The game looks a lot better too. I’m not playing at 4K, but the 144Hz refresh rate does make a difference at 1080p. 4K monitors with a 1ms response time is just too expensive for me at this time.

I’ve never had a console, are they really that bad? I’ve had so many console players tell me they’re way better than my PC. The only thing I think I know is that they are, or were, restricted to 30fps - enough for me to ignore the console players who suggested PC graphics lagged behind consoles.

Either way, welcome to PC ED and enjoy the beauty. I love it when something makes me stop what I’m doing and just look around.

Does sound change much with a sound card? Or do consoles have decent sound card in them?

To be fair, Duck was playing on a base PS4.

On Pro we get a "quality setting" which is (at least this is how they presented back at launch) "a mix of high and ultra PC settings" -- likely more high than ultra. But on planets and stations we never hit 60fps -- only in deep space.

If you want a 60fps lock, you choose the "performance mode", which however locks image quality to "medium" PC settings (roughly).

On the base PS4 Duck was using he had the visual quality of the latter, most often than not locked at 30fps.

On PC.

Yesterday I took my SRV and drove around a simple planetary outpost. I turned off the HUD, used "cruise control" to set my speed to approximately 40 mph, and then I just calmly drove around using headlook to take in all the sights. The detail, the sense of scale, the hubbub of ships docking and leaving, the beautiful mountains in the distance - it was all very stunning to this ex-PS4 player. There's something about ultra graphics at a rock-solid 60 fps that adds a whole new sense of scale and "being there" to the game, and this on a 2D monitor! I never realized just how HUGE those "skyscrapers" are!

And the shadows - my oh my how nice it is to have good shadows again! It adds a whole new layer of realism to the visual experience!

Anyway, I'm just really impressed with how good Elite looks on PC compared to PS4. As someone who likes to "look at things", it's rejuvenated my passion for the game.

Welcome to The Master Race.

I'm guessing that he, like myself, will have much different priorities coming in from Consoles. I know I did the full transfer, meaning I was a Mostly Harmless with billions of credits.

Unlocking Engineers is priority, because the gulf between having them and not is so vast. Weapons aren't as effective, power is more scarce, you're a little less agile, your shields are more vulnerable. All adds up quickly.

I'm (boringly) going back to Jameson Memorial to rebuild my ships on and off, tinkering a few up to the tasks laid out. My Sidewinder is parked at my old home in TZ Arietis, but I chose that home back when I was still earning my way up to a Cobra.

I'm still using the controller, but the Xbox Elite controller is so customizable, I don't know how it adds up to the PS4 controller you were using. I cannot fathom just using the keyboard to pilot, it seems so cumbersome.

now I’m looking for a new home.

This is actually how I spend the vast majority of my time in this game.

After much time spent in Alcazar's Hope planetary base at Merope in the Pleiades, I am, once again, combing the galaxy for a new home.

I'm looking for a planetary port (if possible one of the big, walled ones, but not necessary), must have a shipyard, and must be on a scenic location (like nested in mountains, or deep within a crater or valley, no dusty flatlands). Having high-tech or industrial economy (for better outfitting) is a plus, but not mandatory.

If anyone knows of such a place, and wants to share it's location, I'll be deeply thankful. Meanwhile, I''l keep scouring inhabited systems in a DBX to find it.

I invite you to visit my second home of Ceres Tarn not too far away. Just be sure to switch from suspenders to bungee cords, as the gravity here can be a bit much.

That's awesome :geek:

BTW: have you customized your HUD yet?

This should be a fundamental feature for all platforms IMO. Hopefully FDev will consider it for a future update (maybe even 2020) so console players can take advantage of this.

I'm a PC gamer but play on both PC and XBX1.

Have surround sound with sub woofer on PC. So the amazing lazer show dog fights and Capital ships warping into war zone instances never gets old. Especially if my PC Commander is entertaining a wish of a crazy tourist passenger who wants a front row seat to a live rerun of the Empire Strikes Back

Use a simple sound bar for the XBX1. IMO it's adequate but not immersive the way the PC is. Not sure if you can do surround sound on console the way you can with PC though. Didn't research that. I just wanted the minimum equipment that would run ED as I'm most invested on the PC side.

I already did, there are only 3 planetary ports with shipyards in the Pleiades, Alcazar's Hope, Ceres Tarn and Blackmound Habitation. But I thank you nonetheless. I thought about moving to the Witch Head nebula, according to EDDB there are a lot of planetary ports with shipyards there, however it doesn't seem to be much to do there at the moment (perhaps in a year or so)... The pleiades are, at the moment, the premium place to be IMO, I wish there were more options for a planetary home base.

Yo ducky, are you familiar with the ini changes you can make to further improve the graphics? Also, read this: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/graphics-settings-beyond-ultra-shadows.507620/

Additionally, edit your ini to increase your FoV. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/changing-fov.88743/ I recommend something between 70 or 80, but it's your call. It will buff your immersions to smithereens! You can't change the ini during the game and see the difference though, you'll need to restart the game after editing the ini.

Also if you're feeling brave, you can have a go at things like sweetfx https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/ed-sweetfx-screenshots-and-dl-link.87727/
