This game is freaking amazing!

I have to say, I've never had a problem on Xbox, other than the occasional live outage. 4k. Single button operation. Direct wireless. It's a wonderful consol. Can't wait for Scarlet.

That being said, I still feel like maybe I'd enjoy the PC experience. Only problem is - I get sick in seconds in VR...
I want VR in a gyro chair lol

I play ED on a PC (with GTX1080ti) and a PS4 Pro (on high quality setting) - two separate accounts.
Both use my 32" BenQ 2560x1440 60hz monitor.

I honestly can't tell them apart.

PS ok, Just had a more detailed inspection than I usually bother with and there is noticeable drop in frame rate when inside a station on the PS4.

On PC.

Yesterday I took my SRV and drove around a simple planetary outpost. I turned off the HUD, used "cruise control" to set my speed to approximately 40 mph, and then I just calmly drove around using headlook to take in all the sights. The detail, the sense of scale, the hubbub of ships docking and leaving, the beautiful mountains in the distance - it was all very stunning to this ex-PS4 player. There's something about ultra graphics at a rock-solid 60 fps that adds a whole new sense of scale and "being there" to the game, and this on a 2D monitor! I never realized just how HUGE those "skyscrapers" are!

And the shadows - my oh my how nice it is to have good shadows again! It adds a whole new layer of realism to the visual experience!

Anyway, I'm just really impressed with how good Elite looks on PC compared to PS4. As someone who likes to "look at things", it's rejuvenated my passion for the game.
Try it in VR....despite all the issues with the game, in VR it's truly amazing!!!

I have a PC....& Elite?!

Nope! 'Not seeing it!

Sure, it's quite pretty on occasions but well maybe my rig is out of date or something:

18 mnth old o/c'd Zotac 1070ti & i7 8700k with 2k 32in monitor probably isn't up to the job these days?! Meh!

'Glad you're enjoying it though!

You know you could plug your PC into that 4K screen Right?

Yeah I know but I don't have any room on my recliner for a laptop, and I don't want to hassle with drivers etc. anymore.
We have a pretty good laptop but we don't use that for gaming.
I like what I got now, a couple hundred euros for a new console every so many years is okay too, the Scarlett looks very promising imho.

I've never had any real issues with the Xbox either and I love their Gamepass, so many games for just a couple euros.
I've got it hooked up to my Dolby Surround and it sounds great, movies too btw.
Live outages are becoming a bit of a nuisance though lately.
I've tried vr at my cousin's house and it's definitely not for me, ugh, I never got seasick before, now I know how it feels I think.

The only thing I miss is a good flight sim and my Hotas but my comfy chair, a scotch and a big tv more then compensate for that.

I used to bounce between console and pc every few years now I just do both. I'm a grown ass man like most of us so I choose to spend my leisure budget on gaming. I have a desktop(rtx2080), my daughter has a laptop(gtx1060), and we have an Xbox one and a RiftS. What I currently hate about console gaming since solid state drives came down in price is load times...drives me nuts. Once the new consoles hit that will most likely go away but right now playing Gears5 on the console is painful at times.

As for elite, nothing beats the VR experience if you're core mining or battling in a rez site but for the grind flat screen is the way to go simply because you can utilize other monitors so much easier. And for the record no console will ever touch a high end PC but, as someone else pointed out, you get what you pay for.

Yeah, I run the audio out to my studio monitors. I use old Kenwood KA power amps, and eight Dynaco A-35s. I had to buy an audio converter for the digital signal - it softened the game's high-twipping very nicely.

I love those older amps and speakers and they sound incredibly well.
I used to have a seperate components stereo set too, a very nice Scott lamp amp with Dovedale Speakers, later I bought some nice Magnat speakers.
My wife wanted that big tower and huge speakers out of the living room so no I've got a nice Bose surround set, sounds okay but not as my old stuff though.

Ugh the good old days......

The new non-complaining Old Duck scares me. Its like i've fallen into an alternate reality.

I'll just go check Robert Maynard's posts to make sure in this reality he isn't a hardcore ganker.

i got for my xb1s an external usb3 ssd and moved the ED install on ssd.
It shaved about 1/3 out of startup time and i can swear the jumps are faster too (that might be placebo tho). Not stellar improvement, still an improvement tho

If I'm going to crusade for anything, it'll be for native DS4 controller support in ED.

I've been using the DS4 without any third-party software in ED with just the official sony dongle.

ED recognizes it and shows the correct button icons and everything, wireless or not.

Most other games will work with DS4, but still show Xbox icons. Seems ED support for DS4 is pretty native already (I refuse to use mapping software with DS4 controllers).

You will need the dongle though, but after that you will also see some DS4 specific controller mappings show up in the ED controls section.

What is this dongle you speak of? Right now I'm plugging my DS4 directly into my laptop via USB, and it's fully supported by Tomb Raider and Paladins, but not seen at all by Skyrim (the only games beside ED that I currently own on PC). Now ED does see my DS4, but not as a DS4, at least not when it comes to showing the proper icons or recognizing the touch pad and gyroscopic headlook. It's these things I really miss.

EDIT / UPDATE

Okay, I researched this dongle and supposedly it's just for using the DS4 wireless instead of wired, which I don't need. So now I'm left wondering, why doesn't ED see my wired DS4 as a DS4? I have a one potential answer to this... Time to try an experiment!

The tallest tower on the largest (round) ports are 2 km high. That's why you can be flying at airplane cruise altitude and feel like you're almost on top of the pad.

Anyway, true the game is indeed extremely pretty, it's the main reason (and together with the pleasant flight model, the only reason) why I still play it every now and then, and the main reason why atmo planets is the missing feature I want the most..

I’ve never had a console, are they really that bad? I’ve had so many console players tell me they’re way better than my PC. The only thing I think I know is that they are, or were, restricted to 30fps - enough for me to ignore the console players who suggested PC graphics lagged behind consoles.

Either way, welcome to PC ED and enjoy the beauty. I love it when something makes me stop what I’m doing and just look around.

Does sound change much with a sound card? Or do consoles have decent sound card in them?

People who defend their platform as inherently superior to all others, free of evidence but fueled with obsession, should always be ignored. Especially if they're grown adults.

Although, that said, the Spectrum was clearly superior to the C64, I won't change my mind on that.

No, the Xbox One X is equivalent to a modern mid-range PC. The PS4 doesn't seem to be as optimised.
It's a full Elite experience on either console, we just don't have 3D goggles or desks.

It's the Acer Predator: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXLFLXT/

I got it for under $1000 USD on sale. So far I'm very pleased with it. It can run ED at over 100 fps with Ultra settings, but I lock it in at 60 fps to conserve power and eliminate the occasional stutter that I was noticing with uncapped framerate. You could connect it to a 4K display via HDMI or DisplayPort if you wanted (I don't own such a display).
Try setting the display to 120Hz and bringing the graphics down to high/custom. You could well push 120fps with that GPU. In Elite, the difference isn't that pronounced, but in other games, especially fast-paced ones, the increase in fluidity is really noticeable.
