Project Status:
Hello Commanders! This weekend seems the quietest TDW space has been in a long while. We have moved into the active phase of our expansion, so should arrive in a new system in a few days. A few new factions have filled holes in our space as well, so it looks like the galaxy is heading back to normal operation. We have a selection of conflicts and Retreat Repair to look after but not too much of concern. It might be time to bring our systems back to stability by bringing TDW back above 40-50% in those systems we have let slip.

Items of note:

LHS 2429 - TDW is now firmly in control!

Lave - TDW better, but still a bit low. Boost when able

Retreat Risk/Repair
(Boost these factions to ~10%. 7% might not be enough under current conditions!)
HR 4979 RR Alliance of CD-33 8748 3.8
Yuqui RR Baris Progressive Party 5.4
Turdetani RR Sidewinder Syndicate 5.6
Ross 1015 RR TDW 5.3
Santy RR TDW too high, boost Green party and LTT 7509 Ltd

(Watch these systems for retreat risks, if they go below 6.0%, Boost to ~10%)
LHS 3531 RR TDW 12.6 active retreat state. Should be safe.

Also some TLC for TDW in:
(nothing raising an eyebrow this update)

Turning the Wheel remains in the final planned phase of the project. Our primary goals during this phase are to maintain the systems that The Dark Wheel controls for BGS stability and to expand TDW into neighboring systems. If a new system is free from other PMFs and/or PP issues, TDW will take ownership. If other PMFs occupy the system, we will seek an agreement to allow TDW to stay, be friendly, and not attempt to take control of the system. This is the “good neighbor” policy that has worked very well for the project thus far. TDW being present in many systems is in opposition to what the codex entry says. As TDW grows it is hoped that this will trigger “something” with respect to Felicity Farseer’s quote in the codex entry

Above all, we continue Turning the Wheel for the camaraderie that working together for a common goal brings

As always, if something pops up that “looks odd” see the General Remarks

Please remember:
  • Do NOT work for other factions in TDW systems, unless requested below
  • Do NOT hand in trade goods or cartography data to stations that we do not own
  • Do NOT hand in bounties for any faction other than TDW in our systems

Possible Next Expansion Trigger System:
TDW Missions for INF, Cartography Data and Trade Profits at TDW controlled stations, and Bounty Voucher turn ins are desired at:
Expansion pending out of Baker.

Conflicts:
86 Mu Herculis War - Colanja Gold Power Services 0-0
Anyanwu War - Alliance of LTT 5419 0-0
Arque Elections - Ignore
LFT 926 Elections - CIA 3-2
LHS 397 Elections - Sol worker's Party W1 2-2
LHS 417 Elections - TDW 2-1
LTT 5455 Elections - Minutemen 0-0
Phra Lak War - Usiren Free 0-1
Ross 154 War - BSAC 3-2
Thraskias War - TDW 0-0

Bounty Hunting:
Bounty hunting in any of our controlled systems (9 PUPPIS and/or ANYANWU Compromised Nav Beacons and/or Resource Extraction Sites in TDW controlled systems are great places to go)
Turn in TDW bounty vouchers earned in these locations:
The TDW retreat risk/repair systems listed above
Bounties are apparently the most reliable way to prevent retreats

General Missions & Passengers:
Note: Work Missions for INF in the following systems for the given faction
Keep an eye out for any non-natives getting too low in systems we control
Any TDW controlled system with less than 50% inf are good candidates to do TDW missions in, see “TDW TLC systems”
  • Anything in the retreat risk/repair systems listed above
  • Lave - Boost TDW, target 15% (slipped a bit recently)

Commodity Trading AND/OR Exploration Data:
Trade and Cartographic data into TDW owned stations in the following systems:
  • Do some trade or Carto drops to stations owned by TDW or the faction we are preventing retreat for in the list above. Missions only may not be enough in the current climate.
  • Any TDW station in systems where our influence is between 30 and 50%

Preferred #2 non-native factions (when there are more than one non-native in a system )for long term stability:
9 PUPPIS - Ralu Independents

When factions in a TDW system are in conflict, we want the native faction (N by their name in Inara) to LOSE. We can ignore conflicts between two native factions
We want non-native factions above native factions to avoid invasions. When factions are above 7% influence and own an asset, conflicts can occur. Keep a few % between non-natives to prevent this

Project Status:

Greetings CMDRs! Sorry for being a day late with this update but I had some IRL aggro that I needed to address. The expansion out of Baker has taken TDW to LFT 1349 and we are currently in an election to take the #2 spot. I have talked with the system owners and they are quite happy to have us there! The week looks to be a little less quiet than the weekend was, but only by a small amount. We have two active retreats that need addressing, the additional one for TDW in LHS 3531 is likely just fine since we have a good bit of INF there. There are still a few lingering retreat risks but nothing looks like too much of “a problem” with how those systems have been moving. Conflicts wise, TDW has a few of them and we have some non-natives that need guiding but these also look to be “within the norm”. Looks like a very nice week of mild tending of TDW space, leaves plenty of time for shenanigans. Have fun out there CMDRs!

Items of note:
LHS 378 - Expecting conflict, TDW to win, Can boost to avoid
LP 816-60 - Expecting conflict, TDW to win, Can boost to avoid
Phra Lak - Usiren Free 0-0 (Must win election to avoid retreat risk)
Lave - TDW better, but still a bit low. Boost when able

The Dark Wheel Orders 25-27 3311

Just a quick overview this time as I've been caught up with RL work issues.

TDW is in resonable shape across our space.

TDW is a bit low in La Rochelle. Other factions have Infrastructure Failure so watch that it doesnt spread to us.

TDW is involved in conflicts in
LHS 3531
LP 816-60
Arque
Ao
LHS 417
LFT 1349
Ross 1015
Win each of these for TDW.

TDW is too high in Baker, LFT 926, LHS 2429, Santy, 9 Puppis and Wolf 629. In Santy and LFT 926, this means the non-native factions are pushed too low and therefore risk retreat. Boost them a little to 7+%

I have only been able to take a quick look at our systems, so have likely missed things. Look for conflicts involving Non-Native factions where a loss would drop them below 4-5% and offer your support where able.

I hope to be back on the normal schedule next week!

Project Status:
Greetings CMDRs! TDW has another expansion that just lit off, this time out of LFT 926, which brings back some memories on account of the expansion from there was the first step of this project! Since there's nothing more to do there except the waiting, I gave the crystal ball a good polish and identified pretty much all of the housekeeping around TDW space. Nothing looks particularly out of the ordinary, nor time consuming. The same can be said for our conflicts list for the week. There are a few lingering systems where the PP’s influence on the BGS is still certainly noticeable, but at least they are fewer in number and quite a bit milder as compared to a month ago. Certainly an interesting combination of nostalgia while we are still ironing out the understanding of “the new normal”. Have fun out there CMDRs!

Items of note:
Arque - TDW is currently 1-3 in the war here, ideally we want to see TDW only lose by 1 point to our allies TEAC
HR 4979 - Remains as an oddly behaving system, fix Alliance of CD-33 8748 so they don’t retreat

Greetings CMDRs! The expansion completed and made us guests of the Hutton Truckers in Gnowee, be sure to give them a wave when you see them being their mad lad selves with full cargo holds. Looking around TDW space for the week, we have a number of conflicts to shepherd, only Ross 154 is an eyebrow raiser as we do not want to see BSAC catch a retreat if they lose. Speaking of retreats, there are a few places where a few inf points would go a good way at keeping places nice and quiet. A decent list for sure, but that just means there is a lot to choose from this week. Additionally, the BGS tick moved and it appears that this was due to some tweaking of the code as I am getting reports of and seeing some PP grind systems behaving a bit differently, so we will see how that shakes out for keeping TDW space nice and tidy. Have fun out there CMDRs!

Items of note:
86 Mu Herculis - Expecting conflict, Colanja Gold Power Services to win, can boost to avoid
Arque - Another conflict between TDW and TEAC. Ignore it unless we lose too badly
Eme - Expecting conflict, TDW to win, can boost to avoid
Gnowee - TDW - Boost to 20% for stability
Kushen - TDW needs a boost to avoid conflict with Minutemen, Target ~60%
LHS 378 - Expecting conflict, TDW to win, can boost to avoid
LHS 417 - Expecting conflict, TDW to win, can boost to avoid
Ross 154 - BSAC needs to win the war here else they risk retreat

TDW too low in:
Lave, LHS 336, Yuqui

TDW too high in the following systems (Boost local non-natives):
Baker, Hrimfaxi, LTT 5455, Santy, Turdetani and Wolf 629

Retreat Risk/Repair (RR)
(Boost these factions to ~10%. 7% might not be enough under current conditions!)
Coelrind - Alliance Office of Statistics 5.1%
Kushen - Natural Macalites Regulatory State 5.1%
LFT 926 - CIA 4.7%
LTT 5455 - Minutemen 2.5% RETREAT LIKELY
Santy - LTT 7509 Ltd 5.2%
Wolf 629 - Legion's Armada 4.8%

(Watch these systems for retreat risks, if they go below 6.0%, Boost to ~10%)
(None noted)

Baker or LTT 5455 will likely give out a free ride. No work required.

Hello Commanders! Pressure from PP activity still causes instability in our systems. We’ve started another expansion and have a number of places needing work at the low end as well. The conflict list is manageable with most going the right way

Items of note:
Wolf 629 - Sol Workers’ Party is winning their election but also suffers an Infrastructure Failure so risk retreat.

TDW too low in:
Lave - 8.5%. Normally not of concern, but this system’s population makes any recovery from a retreat state unlikely. We need to be above 10% for safety.
TDW also too low in LHS 336.

TDW too high in the following systems (Boost local non-natives):
9 Puppis, Baker, Hrimfaxi, LHS 2429, LHS 346, LTT 5455

Greetings CMDRs! The current expansion is still ticking along nicely. TDW space has a bit of housekeeping here, there, and yon, which might be a good way to collect some bits of cartographic data for this CG if any of you haven’t turned in something for the free scanner module. The retreat risk list has only a few items for the week (a welcome change from weeks past for sure!) and while the conflicts list is a bit long, most of them are already on the right path, which is always lovely to see! Looks to me like a very nice week in TDW space, have fun out there CMDRs!

Items of note:
Gnowee - Expecting conflict TDW to win
Lopu Maris - Expecting conflict TDW to win
Ross 154 - Expecting conflict, BSAC to win and retake #2
Wolf 629 - Sol Workers' Party, Legion's Armada, and Hutton Orbital Truckers Co-operative are all too low, boost them evenly to avoid conflicts

TDW too low in:
Lave - 10.4%. PP Grind is still a thing, target 15%. Bounty Vouchers are probably the best INF mover here
Yuqui - Boost TDW to ~55%

TDW too high in the following systems (Boost local non-natives):
Baker, LTT 5455, Wolf 629, Hrimfaxi

Retreat Risk/Repair (RR)

Hello Commanders! Our expansion landed us in Zeaex where we are already sitting at #2. This is our 60th system. We will almost certainly have another expansion pending next tick as we have several systems above 75%. Thankfully the list of retreat risk systems is short and the conflicts list manageable.

Items of note:
LHS 417 - TDW has an election but also Infrastructure Failure. We may cop a retreat state even after winning!
A similar situation is in Thraskias with a TDW election and Infrastructure Failure.

TDW too low in:
Lave - we are at 14%, the best we have been in a long while. Target 15%
Yuqui - Boost TDW to ~55%
Arque - TDW 7% keep watch
Ross 1015 - TDW 6.7%

TDW too high in the following systems (Boost local non-natives):

When factions in a TDW system are in conflict, we want the native faction (N by their name in Inara) to LOSE. We can ignore conflicts between two native factions
We want non-native factions above native factions to avoid invasions. When factions are above 7% influence and own an asset, conflicts can occur. Keep a few % between non-natives to prevent this

Project Status:

Greetings CMDRs! Things certainly heated up a bit around TDW space coming out of the weekend! We have a fair handful of conflicts, a short list of retreat to prevent, and TDW is pending expansion once again. I see that the trailblazer CG is back on now that lockdown has been lifted so don’t forget to grab any easy carto data while hopping around in TDW space to pad your CG credits. While certainly a busy week, there are all sorts of things to do for The Dark Wheel, have fun out there CMDRs!

Items of note:
LHS 417 - TDW has Infrastructure Failure. Boost to ~10%
A similar situation is in Thraskias with a TDW election and Infrastructure Failure.

Turning the Wheel remains in the final planned phase of the project. Our primary goals during this phase are to maintain the systems that The Dark Wheel controls for BGS stability and to expand TDW into neighboring systems. If a new system is free from other PMFs, TDW will take ownership.

Hello Commanders! Our expansion has moved into the active state - we will be in our 61st system shortly and likely pushed into another expansion on the completion of this one. Too many of our systems are at or above the expansion threshold for any controlled expansions at this time. This is something most BGS groups are struggling with in the aftermath of the powerplay changes. Our conflict list is under control and the list of retreat risks is also manageable with one urgent exception. TDW space is in general good shape!

Items of note:
LHS 346 - Union of ER 8 Alliance at 3.1% with Infrastructure Failure. Boost to 10% and maintain for several days until the state clears.
TDW has Infrastructure Failure in Luyten 205-128 and Ross 1015. Kep watch.

TDW too low in:
86 Mu Herculis 42.2%, Target 55%
Lave - we are at 13.6%, slipped a bit. Hold TDW here at our ~15% target
Yuqui - Boost TDW to ~55%

TDW too high in the following systems (Boost local non-natives):

Greetings CMDRs! TDW’s expansion from LHS 2429 is currently pointed at Guy, but Martij is also a possibility, nothing to do but wait and see where TDW goes. In the meantime, we have another system to take control of, LHS 336, be sure to get those ballot boxes stuffed to overflowing and make this system fly TDW’s flag! Looking across TDW space we have a good number of conflicts, most are already trending how they need to be, the rest just got started, and there are a few systems on the retreat/repair list that could really use some attention. Looks like a week with no shortage of choices for things to do in TDW space, have fun out there CMDRs!

Orders 01 - 03 MAR 3311

Project Status:
Hello Commanders! Welcome to the chaos that is Trailblazers! Our final ever expansion under the previous rules has placed us in Marditj where we are currently sitting comfortably in third place. We still have a number of systems over the expansion threshold, so I fully expect another expansion to go pending either Sunday or Monday. We have a handful of retreat risks and the usual selection of conflicts to manage as well.

Items of note:
LHS 336 - Elections for system control, stuff those ballot boxes!
LTT 5131 - War TDW to LOSE 0-2

TDW too low in:
La Rochelle 7%
Lave - 13% target 15

TDW too high in the following systems (Boost local non-natives):
Lots… but little point worrying about it. See Colonisation section below.

Retreat Risk/Repair (RR)
(Boost these factions to ~10%. 7% might not be enough under current conditions!)
Santy LTT 7509 Ltd 4.9
9 Puppis Ralu Independents 5.9
LHS 397 Revolutionary Party of Tiapalan 6.5
Turdetani Sidewinder Syndicate 4.4

Colonisation Status
The Trailblazers patch, a little over 48 hours old as I write these orders, has thrown a bomb into any semblance of careful planning for a faction by the known BGS methods. Controlled expansions were already made essentially impossible by the changes wrought by PowerPlay 2.0 - We’ve spent the entire time since then trying to control systems above the expansion threshold and preventing retreats. Many PowerPlay systems have also seen the effects of mission running, one of the major BGS levels, become completely broken. There is some chance that these changes have been fixed with the latest patch - its too early to tell. Even if they are working more or less the way things used to, the changes brought in Trailblazers make targeted expansions a thing of the past.
Controlling an expansion requires very careful management of every single star system within both the source system’s 40 lightyear cube and the overlapping but different cube of the intended destination. In the simplest case, there must be only one system, the target, that has less than 7 factions in range of the source system. Our “home” system, LFT 926 is currently showing more than 30 systems with open spaces, the vast majority of them being new systems brought online in the last couple of days by Colonisation. The BGS expansion process takes almost 2 full weeks to complete, yet a new system can come online via colonisation in under a day if several pilots help build the initial outpost. Expansions in the way our project did things in the early phases is simply unachievable under these new conditions.

The Colonisation process itself takes away any semblance of control over our faction’s presence in space. Our faction can appear in a new system as a result of colonisation in three ways:
1: A Commander bought the colonisation claim / beacon from one of our stations. We should be in #1 position when the first station is built.
2: A Commander who is a member of a Squadron that supports TDW bought a colonisation beacon from another faction, even if TDW is nowhere nearby. We would be in #3 position when the first station is built.
3: A Commander, not aligned with us in any way, buys their claim from a system where we are present and random chance brings us along to the new system. In this instance, we would be in the #2 position when the first station is built.

Almost none of this is even something that can be influenced by Faction Planners like myself. Commanders see a system they like and take whatever steps they want to get it - and good on them for it!

What does this mean for the Turning The Wheel Project? Not a lot really. We had long since exhausted our ability to test various tinfoil theories. TDW is in 61 systems now via the old rules, which should have triggered “something” if all the lore, particularly Felicity’s comments, had any validity. With Colonisation systems counted, even those not yet completed, we are at 92 systems and likely to hit 100 within the next week. That is well past any reasonable numbers considered under the original project terms. With the rapid spread of our faction by Colonisation, we do not have to worry much about an occasional retreat, and we care even less than we already did about maintaining system control, so conflicts are fairly pointless. BGS Expansions are off the table in any meaningful way - who cares if you end up in some random system in 2 weeks time when you’ve hit 20 others by colonization in the same period?
So…. what point is there to the work that Wolfdragon and I have been doing twice a week for the last 5 years continuing into the future? Also very little really.
BGS still works, mostly. So we can still take control of stations, kick people out etc. Plenty to do!

Anyone got some goals reachable with Colonisation that we should aim for?

Colonisation systems status:
10 systems where a TDW sponsored station is under construction.
25 systems where a Squadron member that supports TDW has completed their station.
2 systems where we arrived due to random chance
3 systems where the TDW colony has completed its first station.

(Note this might need review. Our Good Neighbor policy remains in force.)
Turning the Wheel remains in the final planned phase of the project. Our primary goals during this phase are to maintain the systems that The Dark Wheel controls for BGS stability and to expand TDW into neighboring systems. If a new system is free from other PMFs, TDW will take ownership.

Essentially uncontrollable.

Conflicts:
Anyanwu Elections - Aegilips Co 0-0
LP 816-60 Elections - TDW 0-0
Thraskias Elections - TDW 3-0
LHS 336 Elections - TDW 3-1

Charonium War - LSR 2-0
Eme War - TDW 1-0
LTT 5131 War - TDW to LOSE 0-2

Bounty Hunting:
Bounty hunting in any of our controlled systems (9 PUPPIS and/or ANYANWU Compromised Nav Beacons and/or Resource Extraction Sites in TDW controlled systems are great places to go)
Turn in TDW bounty vouchers earned in these locations:

Bounties are apparently the most reliable way to prevent retreats

General Missions & Passengers:
Note: Work Missions for INF in the following systems for the given faction
Keep an eye out for any non-natives getting too low in systems we control
Any TDW controlled system with less than 50% inf are good candidates to do TDW missions in
Anything in the retreat risk/repair systems listed above

Commodity Trading AND/OR Exploration Data:
Trade and Cartographic data into TDW owned stations in the following systems:
  • Do some trade or Carto drops to stations owned by TDW or the faction we are preventing retreat for in the list above. Missions only may not be enough in the current climate.
  • Any TDW station in systems where our influence is between 30 and 50%

Preferred #2 non-native factions (when there are more than one non-native in a system )for long term stability:

Your ability to control your faction will improve with time & experience, in the meantime continue to be a good neighbour.
Avoiding retreats of non-natives in systems you control seems like it should be a high priority imo.

o7 & good luck :)

What a report, @Cryptography! This is quite the change in how things work. Even just PP2.0, I tried several times to reign-in TDW's increases in INF by doing some normally crippling (for the top faction) work, but the faction's INF just kept climbing. I hoped that I could reduce the number of systems in potential expansion state by one here and there.

I always appreciate the effort that you and @WolfDragon exert on this. It has been a long haul since the two of you took the reigns. @WolfDragon and I have spent more and more hours together stirring things up to have fun (and to be effective). We've learned some cool things too in the process. It's a great time.

I presume (hope!), as @Riverside mentions, that we'll gain some sort of ability/control over time. We will see.
Ideas? Goals? I have some, crazy as they may be. I will, however, voice them on the Discord channel rather than here.

@Riverside: hope to see you in-game again soon. I'll send a greeting. :)

Happy travels, CMDRs!

Just to head off any concerns - I'm not depressed or upset, or giving up. Colonisation opens up a whole lot of opportunities for fun stuff to do. BGS, though somewhat broken in parts, still functions. We can manipulate things within systems, stir up conflicts where needed etc.

I do have concerns that the rapid pace of expansion via Colonisation (6 more systems since the orders went up!) will impact all BGS gameplay, and possibly affect PowerPlay as well. BGS has always been niche gameplay that appeals mostly to those of us with long term plans in mind. Your average commander simply doesnt care or even notice this little corner of the world.

The Turning The Wheel project, as described in the very first post in this massive thread has been on life support for a long time. I think this Trailblazers release marks its final death as a BGS based exploration of the lore. It does not mean we simply abandon everything. We change and adapt, find new goals to achieve.

Two ideas I've thrown out to our discord community have been:
1: use Colonisation to send TDW all the way to Polaris. There was some early tinfoil and some suggestions to head out that way that were simply not possible under the game rules at that time - now is an opportunity to revisit and perhaps achieve this goal.

2: Use Colonisation to take TDW into deep space, claim a nice Nebula and build our own highly developed mini-bubble that we can then defend from encroachment by others.

Wolfdragon and I have not yet had a chance to talk things over but as far as I know, he also is here for the long haul.

Change is uncomfortable, but necessary.

Trailblazers has been a tremendous change! I don't think I have words able to fully convey that statement...

Once again, even without direct comms (I've been on travel and such) Cryptography and I are very much on the same brainwave (which is probably why our teamup for the biweekly updates has been so successful!).

I still have a LOT of reading to do as Trailblazers dropped right after I went on travel with nearly zero internet access.

I will do my best to get caught up and do the usual scheduled update to the SO's tomorrow, but I might be a day late with that...

Time to get to reading and rethinking a few "how to" for the things :)

Project Status:

Greetings CMDRs! At the time of writing this, TDW is up to 126 star systems, talk about blowing past the century mark! We also added control of LHS 336 to that list, fantastic job making that happen CMDRs! Cryptography and I are still ironing out some details on how exactly we are going to run things so we can take into account the classical elements of BGS management where they still make sense and have all the fun with colonization, so expect to see more on that later. Looking across the now rather vast swath of TDW space, we have the expected handful of conflicts to shepherd and only a few places where TDW is a bit low for my liking. Good to see that like life, while there are some very big changes that happen on occasion, some things still remain the same. Have fun out there CMDRs!

Items of note:
Kushen - The control gap is too small here, boost TDW to avoid the risk of a challenge for system control
LHS 306 - Expecting conflict, Movement for LP 732-94 Liberals to win, can boost to avoid
Lopu Maris - Expecting conflict, TDW to win, can boost to avoid

TDW too low in:
La Rochelle 7.0%
Zeaex 7.6%
Lave - 11.4% target 15% (Slipped a bit recently)
Charonium 37.5% (Target 50%)
Kushen 53% (Target 65%)

Turdetani Sidewinder Syndicate 4.3%
LFT 926 CIA 4.8%
9 Puppis Ralu Independents 5.0%

As Faction Planners this is largely out of our control, Commanders see a system they like and take whatever steps they want to get it - and good on them for it!

We are currently scouting a couple of ideas for where to take TDW via this new process. We welcome ideas for systems we should aim for from you all!

Colonisation systems status:
I need to see how Crypto is tracking these, by hand is going to be very time consuming with how fast things are changing!

From the past weekend:

2 systems where we arrived due to random chance
3 systems where the TDW colony has completed its first station.
