Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Another daylight CZ - this one in Deciat, which seems to be in some sort of war quite regularly. I think I may have done one in this Walter settlement before, a few weeks ago during another war in this system.

Whatever, I've been doing so many CZs recently and only in the high ones which give the best rewards that I'm now "Deadeye." :p

Trying to decide if I want to buy Odyssey during the discount. Not seeing a whole lot of selling points. PC can handle it, but "just another grind"? .......
Why not, there is a lot of effort to get the new stuff fully engineered but as you can buy it from the Pioneer Supplies outlets in the stations and bases partially engineered I haven’t bothered and haven’t really missed the last two levels of boost.

Personally I like Odyssey enough that I have barely used Horizons/Legacy since it was released, even before the fixes really kicked in.

Same here.

And now it's time to get back to the carrier and head home to the bubble. This trip has been a nice diversion, but not nearly as productive as I'd hoped. Next time arouund - which may be a while - I'm going to a more inner * destination.

Besides, I need more pew pew :D

I.e. Not a Belter or an Outer

I've got Odyssey on two of my four CMDR accounts. I did grind (of sorts) on one of them, doing missions to improve suits and weapons. The other one I just do exobiology and general sneak-mission mischief and have just as much fun. Perhaps more, as there's more adrenalin.

Yes, all my hand-held weapons that I use in the CZs are just over the counter ones from Pioneer Supplies. I've managed to find all grade 3 ones over time and one or two have engineering mods as well. All my suits are G3 as well - for any higher grades than that in either weapons or suits you have to do the engineering grind and I've made a very SLOW start on that, but actually I've also found that G3 on everything works pretty well for me and I'm too busy having fun to spend a lot of time grinding. 😁

As for Horizons, I've used the live version a few times, but only when some Odyssey bug or game crash crops up - not to actually play the game.

Short answer from me is "Yes! Buy it!"

I won't bore you with a long answer as I'm sure you'll already have done your research. In a nutshell, Ody just offers a load more things to do - and if those things tickle your fancy then it's all gravy :D

I watched a YT video "review" of Ody ground CZs yesterday. It was interesting in that, to summarise, it viewed them as being disassociative with the rest of the game.

I could see what the reviewer was getting at but, for me, it just didn't feel that way.

Each to their own, I s'pose.

As the saying goes "one man's meat is another man"s poison" and Ody seems to similarly split opinion.

I love it. And the rest of Elite is still there anyway *

Anyone who tried to make everyone happy failed miserably. It simply is impossible to achieve.

I didn't come to Elite Dangerous for a first person shooter, so I do very little on foot game play other than Exobiology. I find this a great addition to exploration game play. It creates a reason to explore the surface of planets more, and you do get tot see some great sights as a result. On discount, I think Odyssey is worth it just for that. Exobiology also pays well in credits, if that matters to you.

I do like be able to get out of my ship, and I'm always at war with wanting to get in and out of the ship quickly (as we do now), versus properly being able to board and leave the ship instead of just teleporting.

Internal sense/consistency is important for a game and I still cannot get over how a hand weapon cost more than a jump capable ship and why people are fighting over a small building using troops dropped from multiple spacecraft which logically can flatten the entire settlement by itself.

Yep, this was part of the disassociation they alluded to. I think one reference was it was like dropping Super Mario Cart into a football (soccer) match.

Good morning, all. Inordinately long time away, sorry, for which I can only apologise. Life took over somewhat, some deaths, some ensuing legal issues (we really should all hire a solicitor when we hit 50 and make sure that our affairs and wishes will make sense to those who follow), some business issues, some kids taking exams, some building work, all conspired to keep me away from much of my gaming and all of my fora. Hope you are all well?

Anyhoo - what am I up to? Squadron life was skittled by the console/PC split (we were mostly Xbox), although we have sent an advance party over to PC so the squadron still lives on, albeit somewhat reduced (we were #1 on Xbox with over 100 members six months before the split, have the shiny dashboard trophies to polish when feeling nostalgic) but now my life has cleared up a little (although eldest offspring takes A levels next month, so stress and worry are constant bedfellows!) I am back in the gaming saddle. What am I up to, game-wise?:

Two days ago I triggered the decommissioning of my beloved fleet carrier (the Templar's Rest, give her a flyby if you see her, she will be left marking a pristine world nearish to our homeworld, so I can still visit), in order to cash out and try the account port to PC. I will have just under 10bn if the decommissioning works (never tried it before!) so can resume squadron life on the PC side. Assuming I get a PC. To whit, ignore if you wish but can I ask a technical question, especially I guess of you UK chaps -

Will ED run on a laptop? And have you ever used box.co.uk or scan.co.uk? And would ED run on any of these, do you think, and why the massive disparity in price? And is £1500 a realistic budget for a gaming laptop to run ED? I do have a particular set of skills - some of them not a mile off Liam Neeson's on-screen ones - but sadly the hardware side of computers is nowhere near my wheelhouse. If any kind soul could point me at a £1500 laptop which would run ED (or tell me that I need to let the mothballs out of my wallet and quit dreaming) then it would be very much appreciated. I found these few but am flying in the dark without the talent or connection to The Force to get away with it. (And yes, needs to be a laptop ideally as I live six weeks a year in Portugal and would want to take it with me!! I'll also do a bit of work on it - price charts run on anything.)

Lovely to be back, and am serious about the PC switch, this time. Even have approval from 'er indoors!!

(And on the whole 'is Odyssey worth it' question, it's very subjective. Many love it. I tried it a few times and was underwhelmed, prefer walking around in other games which do it better, personally, so I am strictly a pilot in ED, but if you're even pondering it I'd dive in and try it. Majorities tend not to agree with my niche opinions on such things, anyway!!)

Hello! Sorry to hear of your woes but very much welcome back! :)

Out of the three lappies (yes a laptop can work fine) you've linked, I reckon the third will be the most capable. Yes, the others will run the game, but at various degrees of reduced performance. I certainly wouldn't recommend gaming on 8GB of physical RAM despite whichever GPU you choose. And the RTX2050 model will struggle somewhat. *

I've never used Box - all my PC's have been built by Scan. I highly recommend them and their system building site lets you really customise a build to your needs. Not the cheapest folks, sure, but you do get some really great after sales.

Anyway, again, welcome back!

* As a reference point, I have an AMD Ryzen 7 5800x, 32GB RAM, and an RTX3080 (on a desktop PC with some other bits and bobs) and this lets me play in 4K without too much trouble. It does stutter every now and again though. Another point is Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). This is a great to have if your router supports it. I'm using this to play - I really want to get an ethernet connection though - although my router only support the earlier WiFi 5 protocols; which is slower.

Will ED run on a laptop? ...

I bought this lappy (almost) 2 years ago for about a grand and it runs EDO with no issues:

you can see it is below the specs of your links (although I added 16GB extra RAM), that Acer in particular looks great and would smash EDO no question.

P.S. BTW - I bought via Amazon so I could return no quibbles if it was not up to snuff.

P.P.S. - Also, just to be clear, I am referencing that laptop just as comparison to your links, I am not recommending buying it.

Personally, I don't like laptops. Gaming aside, I just find them too restrictive - especially if you're just using the rig only. I like a fulll size keyboard, a mouse and a bigger screen. I also use a desk at which to sit. Sure, you can buy all those peripherals but there's nothing quite like the hum of overworked fans and RGB shenanigans down by your knees :D

Shucks, thank you for the warm and speedy welcome. Thank you, also, for the detailed response, much appreciated. Highlighting my rookie incompetence, I had not even noticed the RAM disparity. I will see if Scan can maybe do me something along the lines of the third one. I will look into our WiFi. I have, post-build, a double garage mann cave, which apart from two MG's in various states of failure and the ubiquitous Fox Mulder 'I Want To Believe' poster also has a sofa and WiFi. I work out there from time to time, so hopefully I have the pacy option already. Our core feed is fiber, despite living in the deepest, darkest sticks.

That's very kind to link that, thank you, and for the helpful background & view on the Acer. I am looking for a bigger screen, as I trade Forex and find the larger screen easier for zooming out my charts. Hence grudgingly moving over a grand. And absolutely appreciate your PPS - don't worry, happy to state here that if I buy junk then I have only myself to blame for mucking up. I have to be similarly cautious when students ask me for feedback on the market. So thank you for the advice, all taken in the spirit intended.

I'm with you - I bought my first PC, shared with my wife (then girlfriend) while we were at university. We didn't live together, so solemnly carried it between our respective houses once a week or to suit study needs. We bought it on hire purchase via Radio Rentals (I was at uni '92-'96, although appreciate that the PC story sounds more like something from the 1970's!), it whirred and wheezed its way through German essays and extended games of Civilisation with similar pomp and ceremony, used to spool up like a Harrier before much happened, loved it. However, I am so often moving that there is nowhere really to set up a permanent base unit, I will end up just trying to move that so might as well go laptop. Then it can join me in Portugal, plus gives me garage gaming options (I have dreams of flying through space in total darkness, and for security the garage has no windows). But I am emotively with you entirely. Thanks again.
