Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Thanks, Communist and Anarchy it is.

I am finally at Rackham's and its crowded here. At least 40 to 50 FC's cramming the slots.

The station exterior is nice and unique. Wish we had more of these scattered around the galaxy.

The interior... bleah, Galnet always paints this as some party town and happening place so I was expecting...more. But its mostly another cookie cutter clone of the standard outpost with a slightly nicer exterior view out the window. I really really wish FDev would give us more interior variety.

I found this rather interesting settlement today, just flying about exploring a system a bit. It's the first time I've seen a fairly high mountain in Odyssey.

The landscape surrounding the place was interesting, although somehow unreal looking.

And then there was this. Yeah, that's realistic for sure. :p

I have to admit I'm not really liking the planetary tech so far. Most places look boring or weird. You can find some nice views, but overall the beauty of the game seems to have diminished.

---------------------------------
On another note, I was doing a Restore Power mission earlier. It's one I've done a few times, at a base I know fairly well. This time, however, I noticed for the first time a machine called a "Sample Container." It had a door that I could open using my security clearance, so I opened it.

All the alarms went off, blaring away. I guess you're not supposed to open that. I wasn't too worried -- the base was empty.

Not a minute later, 5 commandos stormed into the room and started shooting at me. These were not pirates, these guys had security clearance. Suddenly I was the criminal!

I had enough presence of mind to activate my shield and run for the ship. I had to ditch my SRV (they blew it up), but I got away.

That was unexpectedly exciting. If I try it again, I'm gonna locate the alarms and stuff and turn them off first. :p

Yeah. The Command Centre is usually the first thing to visit if you're going to snoop around.
Alarms are one thing, but also I found that turning off the anti-personell and anti-ship turrets ups your survival rate should the things go south quite significantly. Especially if you park your ship fairly close. :D
I really like exploring the various bases. I just vacuumed one fairly large mining facility. It was a challenge to avoid being seen. What I found out is that if you clone a clearance, the workers will see you as a colegue and unless they see you stealing or entering one of the taped-off places, they leave you alone. The do have a tendency to hang around and stare, though, which makes opening lockers quite.. challenging..
Also, when I want to find an abandoned base, I usually look at the mission board which facilities need "help". I don't take the missions, usually, unless they offer interesting rewards, but I do pay those facilities a visit nonetheless. :D

As for the planetary tech, well, it's a mixed bag.
I've seen some beautiful planets. More beautiful than the old tech could ever create. But I've also seen ones that are laughably bad.
I believe it doesn't work as intended, yet. And that they are going to be improving it as they go. They have to.

Why are all on-foot missions on the dark side of the planet? Bad timing, I s'pose! :D
Luck o' the draw. I have had various scavenger missions in the light and in the dark. Same with combat.
Finding I can take out at least 2 blue guys guarding the site, but not above 3 or more.
They are much more accurate with the long range manticore executioner than I am. need engineering mods.

I can only hit with my plasma SNIPER rifle if I use it like a bleedin bayonet up close.

I guess like in the fallout games, plasma is rather slow compared to kinetic weapons. A sniper is normally as well undetected before he is launching his attack, in which case the travel time of the plasma charge isn't important. But if you are detected already, the enemy will certainly try to evade the impact - guess that is why it is hard to hit with it long-range.

It does seem that headshots don't work. Center of mass only. If you hit them with the first shot, they stagger, and you have time for a second one to finish them off. If they had their shields down, the first shot will usually kill them.

Yeah, I got that from watching videos, that the main thing seems to be hitting them consistently to keep them mostly staggered. I saw in the alpha as well, that their aim is mostly off, whenever they are under consistent fire. But as far as plasma goes, it might be good for an undetected sniper, but as a ranged weapon it isn't that good once detected.

Indeed. Then you switch to the shotgun. That thing really does a number close up, and if you over-damage the shield it then damages the NPC's health (unlike the other weapons).

Found this biological. Really hard to spot and had to do a lot of driving/flying to get the biodiversity required. Also got first footfall. Posting this image so highlighting something to look out for:

Yah, these growth patches on the ground are annoying.
Lots of running around.

Reminds me of taking a dog into a grain field or tall grass. Constant jumping necessary. :)
