What is your biggest gripe while using VR?

Navigating through the panel though is where I need to use the keyboard, unless I am missing something?
I don't know what you're using to control the game, I use a Custom PS4 controller, the D pad keys work well to navigate the tabs of the menus, no problems with looking and tab browsing. Perhaps there's a conflict in bindings I'd suggest carefully analyzing the designated bindings for browsing tabs, re-program the Tab browsing bindings if in doubt.

Thanks, I did not even know there were bindings one could use to move around the tabs. Thought I had to use the keyboard/
I am very new to this game lol.

I am using a HOTAS setup. Virpil stick, Warthog Throttle, and a CH Throttle quadrant for additional axis and buttons if needed. ( do a lot of combat flight simming).

I will have a look in the controller menu, thanks.

I wouldn't want to use the touch controllers; I'm fine with joystick, hotas and foot pedals.

Manipulating the Galaxy map can be prevented by making bookmarks of the stations you hop between; easy to select and choose 'Plot route to'.

I find Elite in VR very immersive. I got much much better sense of orientation, especially during dogfights and overshoots.

I would love vr gloves and to have my body tracked in vr. And with that, the hotas, keyboard, and mouse tracked in vr. The chair would respond to my turning, and so would the head. And the silly hand animation would be replaced with your real hand movement.

There are so many things that can be improved in vr.

Ok got them set up on my HOTAS now, thanks from a very new noob lol !

I highly recommend Voice Attack for this game as well. It's a great way to just order up panels and maps. I hate having the side panels pop up and block my view and so just call them on and off as needed. This is not to say crucial time sensitive actions like transferring power and such shouldn't be bound to your hotas.

Yes thanks great idea, I already have Voice Attack as well, will just need to get it set up for ED.

If you're pressed for time, I can recommend HCS Voicepacks for ED. They respond to the games default keyboard settings and offer multiple ways of phrasing in the presets. You might say gear down or deploy landing gear etc. I use ASTRA as her voice is soothing when responding to commands and it gives your ship's computer a personality. Quite immersive. HCS is cheap and extremely robust. They have updated as the game expands and have more commands than I care to play with, but all the essentials are already done and worth every penny.

HCS voice packs are a no brainer for using the rift with E D. I still get a thrill when I can say Request Docking permission, and the macro goes off to do it, along with th voice of your choice saying, Request Sent.

My voice of choice is Minus, which is voiced by Paul Darrow, Avon from Blakes 7! Every now and then he says 'confirmed' or 'afermative' and then he sounds like zehn or slave.

Honestly, when I play e d in the rift with the voice of Avon to do my bidding, I literally do not know how my head does not just explode.

Btw how the hell do you use the virtual keyboard in the new dash 2.0?

Awesome I will check it out, thanks!

I use Ivona AMY as my Windows voice synth because she sounds a lot like HCS ASTRA. I have added some of my own commands for playing my music files and programmed responses that (because the voices are so close) keep the immersion that it's still the same computer speaking. Not to mention that with the Ivona mini-reader I get to have my web articles and docs read back by a hot Brit female. She even read me this post before I posted it, so makes a good proof reader as well.

For me:

Pilot's upper body should follow HMD movements (For immersion).
Space legs!

And a small QOL thing (among many): The message window disappears if you try to read the messages.. (unless you fix your head rotation upwards to the top part of it, making it a bit awkward to read text below).

In addition to the below excerpts from others in this thread.

- The non-curved menu screens, i.e. the commodities screen.
- Forced third person camera modes; The SRV & MC Ship turrets come to mind.
- Being taken out of my cockpit to look at certain information, i.e. Galmap, Sysmap, Galnet News & Powerplay(if I used it).

I'm kinda OK with the SRV 3rd person though (haven't tried MC). I find it's pretty cool "sitting" up there while driving / shooting, not to mention better on bumpy terrain when it comes to nausea. But I wish it was a somewhat better solution than the floating ghost thing. I guess it could be explained away as some sort of telepresence ( And who am I to argue against that, sitting here with a screen strapped to my face :p )

The immersion breaking orange circles and text around everything you look at.

+1. It should be a toggle, like orbit lines.

- The UI text is a bit blurry, some planetary surfaces as well. Option for a simpler text with less gradient would be nice.
- I wish you had the option to turn off character model and that the captain's sea had a shorter back.
- Obviously VR is still in infancy, and the res could certainly be higher

But those are minor gripes. Elite in VR is a fantastic, fantastic game. Heck, I've spent hours in it just lying on the couch listening to music after having parked the ship in some scenic portion of space. That rear window shelf in the Asp is my virtual camping bed.

As for drinking, I use a bottle. :)

+1 to all, except the Captain's seat back, I haven't really thought about it.
Also, you made me poor and lured me to buy an ASP Explorer (might be you have an ASP Scout though?). Awesome cockpit anyway. Here's to camping behind the captain's chair looking out the windows! [big grin]

Screens left and right popping up and blocking my view, would like to move them down and tilted backward. (should probably just turn it off and get used to pressing buttons)

+1. And that's what I did, I just use buttons.

My biggest gripe is the lack of FULL VR support with touch controllers to handle everything ingame: touch screens, ingame vr keyboard, virtual controllers and so on.

I agree this should be an option. Also if space legs ever becomes reality, it could be an advantage.

Also, tried VTOL VR? Or MARS 2030 for that matter, but that's not flying, just driving around on Mars in a rover. But they both have virtual controllers. Works pretty well too (but I prefer HOTAS as I have that ofc).

This is not a, I hate VR response, but, for me wearing the headsets was annoying. They are bulky and uncomfortable. Additionally, the wired ones get all tangled up, depending on what game your playing. I think the technology is headed in the right direction and I look forward to wearing a wireless ski mask one, one day.

OP.
My biggest gripes are:

  • Resolution / picture quality isn't as good as a monitor
  • Typing in chat is a right pain, especially as I have to take my glasses off for VR
  • can't easily access youtube etc in an immerisve way
  • can't pick up and play - need to prep to make sure everything is to hand b4 I start a session

All that said, the advantages & immersion far exceed my gripes. I don't often play outside VR nowadays.

Itchy Nose
Lenses fog up (airconditioned environment, how difficult would it be to design vents to allow hot air to escape...UP)
lack of comfortable leather face padding.
Screen Door effect
God rays which get worse with fogging, (lift headset to allow dry cool air to enter).
Dive Mask effect.

If any vendor produced a headset (same resolution) which eliminated the Dive Mask effect I would buy it in a heart beat, oh, and while you're there place some vents in the thing....

- the shimmering lines
- lack of FOV (Rift)
- having to clean the bloody lenses every 5 minutes
- the facial interface thingy tickles my nose
- that's enough moaning from me - 3.0 will be here soon yippee!!

The shimmering lines (often called "godrays") and the feel of needing to clean the lenses is often the same. The godrays sometimes look more like gunge on the lenses than anything else. Greatly lowering the UI brightness (right holo menu, settings) really helps. Also, if you've altered the UI colors, an increased contrast color scheme (white or blue) might cause heavy godrays looking like smudge. Rather choose a low contrast color scheme.

For the Oculus Rift I bought a "VRCover" set (https://vrcover.com), they're also available on Amazon and other stores. They seem expensive for a bit of fabric and plastic, but they're worth it: a) I barely have fogging issues anymore now (and I did!) - I don't know why vrcover helped with that, but worked for me. b) removable (velcro) leather face padding c) you can add washable "socks" delivered with vrcover for hygienic reasons
