Why exactly do we actually need an external view?

So that we can see how bad ass our ships look from the outside?

I'm not balding, middle aged and driving around in a muscle car trying to impress girls almost a third of my age. Well actually I am balding, middle aged and trying to impress girls almost a third of my age... however I digress.

Apart from eye candy, what would an external view actually add to the game play?

I'm not fussed either way... it would be handy for screenshots etc but apart from that I don't feel like I'm missing not having 3rd person.

There are some games that are actually worse or ruined for 3rd person, I think it we had third person it should not work in a combat or station situation just in deep space, that way people can get their cool screenshots without ruining immersion or changing combat.

Interesting you should compare Elite to Flight Sims they are really different games. Microsoft Flight sims are not in space, they do not have story/open world play at this scale, there's no missions or trading and no PvP/Combat. Just because Elite is called a space sim by some it doesn't mean it's the same as the games listed by the OP.

Just add the damn external view to Solo Mode then.... if it's the PVP thing that's the problem.

I'll admit that I haven't touched the game since two days after it's release. It's not just a finished game for me yet and I can do other things until they finish it.

While i cant understand the fetish with thirdperson view, as long as its without the hud/side menus i cant see how it could hurt.

And im pretty sure we will get it one way or another soon enough.

Well, it's Frontier who try to sell ship skins to us. ;)
Skins which are currently utterly useless, because noone ever really gets to see a ship in them. In outfitting we only get close-ups here and there, in space the colour as well as other details - if these details actually exist: I wouldn't know, we don't get to have a proper look at the ships anywhere in game - get lost beyond passing others in the entrances of large stations.

Replacing the skins with a "post-release support donation" button would make more sense. :p

Oh, and about screenshots - well, good screenshots help sell a game.

We go walk in station, hangar too. I understand the idea: 'real sim'. 3ª person view is a OPTION.

You like 3ª view, press a 'x' button in solo mod

You dont like, no press a 'x' button in solo mod

Open play, dont need 3ª, (in hangar yes)

Simples! :D

If Frontier want to keep space combat first person that is fair enough - same playing field for all, I have no problem with that. But I would like to be able somewhere to see my ship in all its glory. Currently the Outfitting window just teases us. I'm guessing when they implement walking around we will see our ships, but that's not coming any time soon. Is there an option to turn of the interface window in Outfitting to see the whole landing bay?

External views of own ship in a Sim - lol! Just add a rear view camera. I need to know if I'm about to bump into a cop in a station before being blown up by it!

Elite Dangerous is a first person game. There may be plans to add some kind of drone to allow you to view your ship in third person during non combat situations. It may never happen though.

Everyone using the same view in combat makes things even.

I'm happy with this game being first person only and you really should spend more than 10 mins in game before deciding that the camera mode is a problem.

I agree with you on the level playing field!

BUT, I do want to be able to look at the game from outside the cockpit, take screenshots of the environment without the lines, names, or other garbage being in the screenshot. I posted a message in another thread for this same thing (Hint - Repeat thread) saying that if your in out side view, to remove combat abilities as long as your in this view...

im a big sim player myself .... Eagle Dynamics and iracing .....iracing only has external views in replays and lock-on and all of ED's sim's use outside views but only to look at your surroundings like a previous poster said to look at your ship and the beautiful galaxies we visit!!! Could take some great screen shots... But as with lock-on you really cant control your aircraft as it should be!!

Ok, so I've spent 10 min in this game, training to launch, all spent looking for an external view - I've been playing simulators for 20 years, huge on flightsim.com - look up my name- wrote a great article on immersion simming 15 years ago, I find it absolutely ridiculous that there is no external view in this game, every simulator from 1995 on has it! Battle Cruiser, FS95, 98, 2000, 2004, X and PrePar3d, Xplane, Fly, FLYII, these are all more robust simulators than this and they all had it. Crap - even Orbiter 2010 - a Freeware space simulator has it! Don't talk to me about "immersion" as that is an excuse for not having it, Its a GAME people! If anyone can choose not to use it if they don't want to! Are we communist now? lets save the people from not being immersed? Is this going to happen and WHEN? I do feel cheated on this based on the on line advertising AND the basic fact that precedence IS that simulators HAVE EXTERNAL VIEWS! Where is mine?
Is not simulater, is game. Final word.
