Currently I have an ancient MS Sidewinder non force feed back, not sure of the exact model but it looks like this
Microsoft-Sidewinder-Joysti.jpg

To be honest I've largely given up on it and mainly use mouse/keyboard, no specific plans to upgrade yet.

Thanks to Elite I'm getting back into PC gaming after years of consoles, and I've decided to go the whole hog (sorry) and get the Thrustmaster HOTAS set-up.

I am a little tempted by the Saitek X52 Pro, if only because of all those cool blue lights.

Did this poll kind of forget all about left-handers?

Thrustmaster t.16000M is our choice!

Sadly, as a leftie I've had to vote other, will be going for the Thrustmaster T.16000M.

Wanted a nice 'full' HOTAS with thrust separate but apparently I'm too much of a freak :p

(also too long in the tooth to contemplate learning to fly right handed)

EDIT :- lol Susim, beat me to it :)

I'm also left handed but had to learn to fly right handed years ago, which I find in fact makes it easier. Because it means my left hand is free to use the keyboard.

X52 pro for me also.

Seemed the best middle range JS that folk were using succesfully.

I find it works great in game though i have no other point of reference as regards other models/makes.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro - and no plans to upgrade.

Dude don't buy that. Logitech may have high priced stuff only good. I have that crappy joystick and it started to malfunction. I tried to fix it but no chance. It have poor potentiometers. Tilt axis was the worst.
I once gave my first on warranty because of precision loss. They send me new one and guess what similar stuff happened. When you twist handle it have poor precision as far then worst.
It was some years ago maybe they make better now. I dont know. But I have also gamepad from logitech, Chillstream and I had to send it back because analogue gauges started to lose precision and finally go crazy whenever I tried to use them. Left one just started to work on its own :) They send me new one and luckyly this one didn't breake. But have potential to wear off quickly in some places :/ I used also logitech mouse MX 510 and it not only wears under thumb and at that logo but also after some time just started to malfunction.
Someone may say that I am bad user of stuff but other stuff works quite well for now for quite long time. From poor products I also don't recommend microsoft sidewinder 5 mouse. Rubber on mouse wheel started to melt over time! NO JOKE :D I had to replace it with mx510 rubber that was much better and even fits well. That mouse also had pathetic plastic sliders that I had to change. I bought teflon ones. Mouse on that price level had no teflon sliders :/
My girlfriend had microsoft mouse for laptop and it started to malfunction in its wheel. Just very cheaty companies :/

Those companies for me are just dead.
I don't recommend logitech products especially at average price range and low price range. There are onter products on that level from less known name and are better than those low priced and average priced products of logitech. I just maybe had very bad luck with logitech. But those wearing effects is not bad luck it is just poor construction.

I recommend to you Saitek joystick. I also use madcatz gamepad and I can recomment products from that both companies. Saitek cyborg fly 5 is at similar price level. My cousin use it and it feels great and also looks very futuristic and is very customizable. I tried it and I like it.

But really watch out on logitech products. For me this company is dead.
I personally am thinking on HOTAS setup and my favorites are saitek x52pro, x55 and 65. But last one may be cool and futuristic but is to pricey so I am more focused on x52 pro and x55 and that way I can buy also trackIR instead of buying 65 that is very interesting but to expensive. So I think it will be better to have trackIR with HOTAS setup.

So as for logitech 3D pro just really try in shop to compare it with others and really choose well. I just wanted to save somebody from disappointment :)

Off topic a bit, but since you're dissing Logitech - a true story that happened to me a couple of months ago.

I had a Logitech Harmony One remote control. I've had it for about five years, and it had a lithium rechargeable battery inside. Eventually it stopped accepting charge, so when I opened the remote to try and change it I discovered the battery had swollen and couldn't get out.

I gave up and bought a new remote, though I wasn't happy about it at the time as they were expensive.

Just on the off-chance though (because I liked the remote and the family had gotten used to it), I sent a message to Logitech customer support to see if they had any suggestions. I explained it was long out of warranty.

They replied the next day asking if I could send photos of the damage. So I did. Next thing, they're sending me a brand new Harmony Touch remote as a replacement!

So yes, you could argue that the battery should not have swollen, that the remote should have lasted longer than five years, but you simply cannot fault their customer service. You will not get that from any non-brand company that makes cheap peripherals.

TLDR; a different view of Logitech.

A lil off-topic.. but

Eventually it stopped accepting charge, so when I opened the remote to try and change it I discovered the battery had swollen and couldn't get out.

I'd be VERY careful about touching that Li-Ion battery. These are incredibly dangerous items. It is in fact one of the primary theories behind the missing Malaysian flight. They were carrying Lithium Ion batteries as cargo. For the record, I am qualified in IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for aircraft.
When a Li-ion battery starts to burn, there are two things that will happen:
  • It will burn intensely, but gradually.
  • You will not be able to extinguish the fire with any device, nor a fire blanket (Li-Ion provides its own "oxygen")
  • It will emit a toxic and corrosive gas which dissolves the linings of the alveoli in your lungs, as well as dissolving some of the respiratory tract.

Not sure what's worse. Li-Metal or Li-Ion. While a professionally made Li-Ion battery burns slowly, a Lithium Metal battery will explode if penetrated. But usually only the military and other specialist groups use Li-Metal (because they can't recharge, but contain more power).

In addition to my x52 pro I also have a Logitech Attack 3 which has a very different feel. Very solid. Son will be using it for ED.

Agreed - I had no intention of trying to force it out. I originally hoped Logitech might suggest a way to get inside the remote so I could lift it out safely. Anyway, it's long since been disposed of. :)

I have an old Attack 3 in reserve - very solid and durable, for a budget 'stick (and left-hand friendly too).

I'm currently commanding my Oolite Cobra with a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

I'm a longtime fan of Logitech, but I find that this controller has a lot of "drift" when my hand is just resting.

So today I just took delivery of a new Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS. Will just need to decide whether to map yaw to a hat, or throw down yet more $$ on pedals.

There's a review of controllers available on Steam, if anyone is interested

Hands on: Valve Steam Controller review

I've got an ancient Sidewinder Precision Pro stick, old but good, and if a stick and a keyboard are good enough for Elite I'll treat myself to a nice Cherry MX-Board 3.0 Wired gaming keyboard (£56 on Amazon).

Other:

CH Pro Fighterstick + CH Pedals+ Ch Pro Throttle.

I have all of them working well with each other in the current Alpha.

Now, if you release a Linux client I shall probably also get the Warthog HOTAS and a bigger desk :).

I'm using a Speedlink Black Widow. It was cheap and durable.

8 buttons (four on the stick, four on the base), 8 way hat switch a throttle lever with a rudder built in to it (no twisty stick but it works well)

Cheap, cheerful and good build (the throttle is smooth with some satisfying drag) quality.

With that investment made, I'd get the CH pedals to complete the set. Nice gear thqt HOTAS.
