ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

The HD prototypes debuted at E3 last year, the DK2 is hopefully well beyond that.

I've heard yes and no.
DK2 is better due to low persistence, higher framerate, lower pixel switching time, contrast, colours, bright whites and the positional tracking but actually worse regards perceived resolution, weight and screen door effect. I believe the difference in res and SDE is mainly due to the pentile subpixel arrangement (DK2) over a standard RGB layout (DK1, HD prototype).
DK2 may also have better lenses.

Pentile (this is the pixel arrangement of the Samsung note 3 which are suggested are the screens for DK2)

Since the DK2 announced release I've been follow the whole thing closely, as much as E: D! I tried the DK1 could see it was the future!

I didn't want to say before, because it might have caused even more crowds, but we were using the HD prototype with ED, and it was fabulous :D... drooool

Do you mean the DK2?

It's not the DK2, HD prototype is slightly different. See my previous post for more details on the difference.
Easiest way to tell is did it have a camera and positional tracking? If yes then DK2 if no then HD prototype.

Good sir, do you happen to know the specs of the Rig running this, in particular the Graphics card?

I heard I7 and 780ti but the Doc will able to confirm.

DK2 has a higher Frame rate than the HD prototype I believe thus the requirements to run it at it's best is higher on the DK2 than HD prototype.
Saying that a i7 and 780ti is better than what I've got and I'm expecting to run a DK2 AOK.

It wasn't the DK2, although that is currently supported already. This HD prototype won't go to market, so we couldn't let anyone take photos or video of it. I think it was running two 770s in SLI mode. To be honest, I would be perfectly happy with this version, which has 1080p per eye and looks just amazing. You can read all the text with no problem

I hear there may be problems with the Rift with SLI and Xfire setups due to microstuttering. Anything other than a butter smooth frame rate causes nausea or at the very least a not very nice experience. It's currently recommended to use a single powerful GPU. A single 770 should be hunky dory. I'm sure that Rift demos of other games were running 780ti machines (maybe, my memory isn't great)

It's not really 1080p per eye but 960x1080 per eye. Basically it is 1080p but split in two so the 1920 part of 1920x1080 is halved.

The DK2 will be better in some ways than the version you tried but worse regards the more noticeable Screen door effect and perceived resolution will be lower (on predominately red or blue images as there are less red and blue sub pixels than the HD prototype). I also hear the DK2 has some ghosting issues due to the low persistence stuff but then again I heard the HD prototype had quite bad ghosting/smearing. Not tried one though can't can't really say for sure.

Not poo pooing the DK2 though, I'm super Super SUPER! excited for July ;)
Maybe more than I was for E: D, controversial! :)

I'm pretty sure DB has mentioned that they actually have a DK2 in one of his recent interviews.

They could have one but be under an NDA.
I know some DK2's have been seeded with certain developers but no names given.

There was a picture a short while ago of DB with a DK2 but that was confirmed by an Oculus rep to be one that the rep takes to different Devs to show it off, the rep took it with him when he left (or so he said ;) ). No doubt it's not a massive thing to upgrade from DK1 to DK2 so FD managed to make it work with E: D while it was onsite.

In the gamespot stage demo DB does say that E: D supports DK2 but didn't say they had one.

I'm not sure how it goes with SLI, but I can confirm a 780 works very well with Elite right now. I always have the resolution set to 1080p when I am using my DK1, so a DK2 should give the same fps performance.

If you are interested I will do an fps test later and post the details (and maybe include a video).

The DK2 supports 60, 72 and 75 hz refresh rates. Ideally you want to get 75fps minimum with Vsync on. In 3D it's a bit more a push.

I'm expecting to have to drop my in game settings right down when using the Rift.

Apparently it's is better to have a higher fps (up to the refresh rate) in VR than in is to have graphical lovelyness as it leads to increased presence (feeling like you're there) and reduces nausea via the low persistence (which removes smearing but also needs high frames/hz). A consistent framerate is also important, soon as you start to get lower rates you'll experience juddering with may also make you sick.

Again I can't talk from experience of anything more than a DK1 but I read a lot of stuff on the Oculus forum and reddit where Oculus employees frequent.

Actually, he said: "We have DK2. We support it today." (Around 10:00 in).

Unless he misspoke, I take that to mean they have one in the office.

It's vague, I interpret "We have DK2" as "We have DK2 support in the game" not "We have a DK2". I'd say that my interpretation may be correct because of the next part "We support it today".

Again they may have one but I don't see it being confirmed in that video. They could have added support to E:D when they had the loaner onsite so having support doesn't confirm they actually have one to play with.

Maybe a Dev could pop on and confirm or deny, saves conjecture ;)

Oh sweet I've been asking in a couple threads about two gtx770 in sli (what i have) and if this is correct it would lead me to believe I'll be ok. Awesome :D

wait......1080 PER eye? I thought it was 1080 combined no? :S

There was a tweet the other day with a pic of David Braben playing elite in a dk2 at FD.
