You're definitely not alone in that. There are a lot of reasons people play the BGS and PP though. Some folks like the game of chess, for some it's the thrill of knowing that others are directly working against you. Folks like to have their names on stuff, regardless of if it's only a name.
I will say that I think the argument that PvP is useless in BGS/PP work is a bogus one. If a player group can actively drive CMDRs away from a particular resource (say, a mission board at a space station, for instance), then they can exert control over that resource. If system work were only done in open, and a player group had enough manpower to fortify their system through threat of force, then they could halt any work happening there. What I mean is - PvP is only minimally useful to BGS/PP work because it can be circumvented by the other game modes. If those modes didn't exist, or couldn't affect one another, then there would be good potential for PvP as an effective method of conquer and control.
I'll say that is an excellent argument against restricting stuff to open. Exerting control over a resource. I don't want that in this game. Conquer and control by players doesn't belong in this game as far as I'm concerned. As far as I'm concerned. I'll repeat that. I don't want a group of players dictating my movements in this game. It's one of the reasons I got tired of multiplayer a long time ago. Now Elite comes along, and this is a game where that sort of thing is not possible, so it appeals to me. I read David Braben stating the game will not revolve around PvP. Great! I read that groups and guilds won't be able to exert pressure on other players. Excellent! Take my money.
Plus you argue this could be good for potential PvP, but keep in mind that you get inexperienced PvEers fighting experienced PvPers. When you get blown up again and again, you quickly lose your enthousiasm and you are indeed driven from parts of the galaxy. I suspect what will be left is PvPers who feel powerplay and BGS manipulation is boring (as they have stated many times), they're only interested in being able to interdict more CMDRs, sitting on their hands when the target dry up. Except for those who are now already playing Powerplay or BGS in Open.
Having said that, I'd love it when Frontier would make Powerplay Open only. Just as a showcase. I predict it will do precisely nothing to spice it up, but rather will result in a decline in the number of participants. Because in all of this people are arguing from a position of power. Being the experienced PvPer. Little thought is spent on those who will need to make the switch from PvE to PvP. And reading the sentiments here and seeing the videos of the oh so challenging asymmetric PvP ("I am only doing that because I don't have any other content guv, give me content and I'll not do that thing anymore, honest!") I am thinking, please make Powerplay Open only. Witnessing the resulting damp squib will be great entertainment.
Fdev needs to increase the payouts for cmdr kills as well as change some other game mechanics.
Queue the argument that it doesn't matter because of limited instancing.
Cue the argument: See? He just wants more CMDRs to kill. Powerplay or BGS doesn't interest him one iota.
He wants to have easy targets to kill and be rewarded for it.
