Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I dont quite get this. So the planet tech is going to be different between Horizon players and Odyssey players. How does that not mess up the single universe thingy if stuff is missing in one universe?

BTW, I didnt take part in the Alpha but I bought Odyssey. Is there a nice guide or FAQ out there? Or do I expect to die 600 times on foot first?

The short oversimpified answer is - it does.
Horizons and Odyssey will run as two separate server instances (i.e. the players from one will no longer be able to interact with the players from the other). It has angered many, because it basically splits the community in half. Whereas before players of the base game could play with Horizons players (only they couldn't land on planets, obvs), from now on, the base game players will be orphaned on their own server.
As far as I know, the transaction servers (stuff like BGS, exploration data, etc) will still be common to both, though.

But i think I did hear that some stuff (new planetary tech in particular) will actually trickle down to the base 'Horizons) version as well.

........ do I expect to die 600 times on foot first?

At least. ;)

NPC foot-soldiers seemed to be bullet-sponges. There is no way I am going to attempt any FPS stuff as I am not really into that anyway and when I did try in the Alpha I was reduced to a wheezing, red-ringed, fade-to black view, lying on my side whilst they still kept pumping bullets into my corpse.

Tonight, as I attempt to mine Panite to unlock Selene Jean (10tons, not a lot really), I am reminded of the time I bought some 'speciality', 'organically cultivated' chitlins so I could grow my own potatos. Six quid they cost and I would be lucky if I got enough spuds for a meal for two.
I spent ages finding a Metallic ring and just over an hour mining away and how much Panite do I have? ONE TON OF PANITE!!!!!
Now, if I don't get blown to pieces as I make my way back to an Outpost to stock up on limpets, I'll have to sell the Panite because I don't want it on me when I get back to a Metallic Ring.

There are a few videos from the alpha that attempt to explain how things worked during that, but nothing more.

We don't know how it all works yet. We don't even know entirely what's in it.

You'll have to be part of figuring it out!

I personally found the on-foot stuff to be quite interesting, although I'm not much of an FPS guy. It was possible to do many of the missions stealthily, and I enjoy that.

I DID die a few times at the beginning, but that was to be expected. Later on, I even survived an on-foot conflict zone.

Anyway, I'm more excited about the other changes. I found it quite cool to be able to get out of the ship and walk around on planets. And the visual upgrades will be very nice. This game already looks amazing, and it's going to get better.

Odyssey is my birthday present, too. I'll be 70 on the 20th, one day after Odyssey launches. Happy birthday, CMDR! lol

rather than go through pages of salt, are these requirements ok for you pc lot?
I might have issues as my laptop is 1Gb light on graphics memory. So if I don't win the competition I might actually have to get serious about that new PC well at least that would deal with the intermittent issues with the V* key.

*That took 5 attempts to get the one in have worked first time.

Way lower than I anticipated, to be honest.
I wonder what did they cut, gimped and downgraded since Alpha.
Hard to say, especially because if they got rid of the terrain pop in/outs (or at least made it less obvious) there is more high detailed surface to render than in the alpha. There was some weird bug with terrain textures in the near area around the player at certain locations, which looked to me like 2 textures being in the same place interfering with each other - fixing this might get slightly better results.

When it comes to particle effects, those are heavy on older graphics hardware - eventually there could be some downgrading on older graphics cards - like those being less dense and/or less brilliant atmospheric lighting (like replacing these effects by ambient lighting and giving atmospheric particles some glow effect instead of proper lighting).

Shadows are another area where performance gains are to be expected on older graphics hardware, if those are lesser quality (avatar shadows weren't that great anyway, especially if there is a gap between the ground shadow and avatar feet, which makes it obvious that the avatar is floating above ground) - removal of those could gain some better results on older graphics hardware.

Drawing distance for objects is another area - we have seen that with plants on surfaces, that they pop in/out quite near - higher drawing distance would make it less obvious, but at the same time reduce performance. Still reducing the drawing distance on older graphics hardware could be a significant performance gain, but creates more pop in/out..

These are a few areas, which might get the best performance gains at the cost of graphical quality - but that could be limited to older hardware.

Well, servers are down now. Then there will be the big 60 or 70 gig download when Steam is ready.

I will probably just stick to walking around stations at the start while watching youtube videos on how not to die 600 times on foot first. (BTW, I assume we can walk around outposts too? Not just stations?)

As a pet project, inspired by the East India Company and the Age of Sail, I plan to do a trading run by loading the FC with as much booze as it can carry (say about 15k tons?) and haul it to Rackham's Peak. Based on available prices, that should fetch over 500m in profit. Is this a workable plan? Can anyone advise how much tritium would be needed? I am planning to stock about 5k. (edit: ok, checked spansh and it seems ~ 3800 tons of tritium and I will have some fumes left on return)

Its either that, or Robigo Zombie Taxi which should net me about 2 billion for the equivalent time spent.

I should be fine on a standard 2 year old Dell but I'm under on the recommended graphics with a 4GB 1050 Ti. That's the last thing I intended to upgrade so I may have to get creative with the settings. I'll just slam them on ultra and work down from there.

I think Exigeous is doing a live stream around tea time so I might check in and see what they're up to.

I've got most of the top pops except my RX 580 is 4 gigs, and my Ryzen is a 1400, but i'm way above on the rest of the reccomended requirements, so for me, I'll prolly be able to run the game on medium graphics mostly, and maybe low in higher intensity areas. But as I can't afford Odyssey this month (i'll get it next month) I won't be able to know how I'll run till then lol.

Mine is slightly below recommended spec, the culprit being the 980ti *. I'm hoping the ti bit will bump things up a tad. I have the RAM and a CPU that's been o/c'd to 4.4GHz. DIsk space is not an issue as it will be sitting on a 1TB SSD.

I'm not sure how long the download will take - my usual speed is ~105mbits/s but given I've already done the alpha download... well, I'm not sure if the live game requires a complete overwrite or updates selected files only. We shall, indeed, see.

*And, given the state of GPU availability right now, that's unlikely to change for a while and I'm damned if I'm paying scalper prices!
