AMD RX 6000 series driver issues & workarounds

The only "issue" with the 6000 series (outside of VR) seems to be the orbit or gravity lines get corrupted when they align either vertically or horizontally. I switched from an NVidia to a AMD 6900XT 4+ months ago and this is the only difference I've seen. Nothing else even odd or strange.

I used to always line up towards a planet with the gravity lines horizontal, but since they nearly disappear and look 'broken' at that orientation now with the AMD I've learned to line up with them at a slight 15 degree angle or so and then they look fine. While I wish this wasn't a problem, it is relatively minor.

Hope this is helpful!
What does this look like? The problem with the orbit lines. Sorry if it was captured in a previous page.

The problem is the orbit lines tend to disappear when they are completely vertical or horizontal. Anywhere in between and they look as you would expect. Picture this - you just jumped into a system and are flying away from the star and towards a planet. Let's assume the planet's orbit line is at a 45 degree angle out your cockpit window. Start rotating your ship slowly... nothing looks odd until the last few degrees just shy of 180 degrees (horizontal) and suddenly the line gets thinner and thinner until it become more of a dotted or dashed line. If you keep the rotation going the line becomes solid again when it is no longer exactly horizontal. Keep the ship rotating until the orbit line approaches straight up and down (vertical) and it starts to disappear again, and reappears as you keep rotating. A few degrees off of 180 or 90 and the lines are normal.

Additionally, pretend you're closing in on a planet with a moon or space station, and the moon's orbit line or station's orbit line appears as a ring around the planet. The ring looks thinner all the way around on AMD than it does on NVidia. As you get quite close to the planet, the ringed orbit line is more noticeable (thicker perhaps?) but the part of the ring at the top/bottom and left/right are too thin to make the line look continuous.

There are some photos in this thread but it is easy to miss this effect without paying really close attention because the lines are nearly invisible at that point.

I recently played on a 3060 laptop and can confirm the orbit lines were perfect, just as I remembered with my previous 2080 in my PC. Other than this (or if you are using VR), from my experience (I don't do first person combat, so I can't speak to that) the game looks and plays identically regardless of Nvidia or AMD.

Here's a video I made over a year ago. It's only 1080, as I didn't have a 4K monitor at the time. It's an AMD issue that just happens to really stand out in ED. AMD isn't going to fix it, and FDev can't without excessive work (they really shouldn't have to IMO). I recently replaced my RX 6900 XT with a RTX 3080 Ti. The issue is gone, and I'm enjoying ED again.

I noticed this thread is now a YEAR old....

Are there STILL issues with the Radeon RX 6000 Series and ED?

I've been running an old RX 580, and I am now looking at replacing it with maybe an RX 6750 XT, because I'm using a 32" LG Freesync monitor, and I don't trust that if I buy an nVidia card, that its G-sync will be compatible as its not on nVidia's "tested" list of Freesync monitors.

So can someone give me a run down on what all the current "issues" are with the RX 6000 Series, and ED? Or is it JUST the orbital lines mentioned above thats an issue?

With VR (and with various workarounds that I am not an expert on), yes.

With orbit line aliasing, always has been.

The VRR functionality of almost every Freesync display works just as well on NVIDIA, even if it's not on NVIDIA's lists.

Outside of VR, it's pretty much just the aliased orbit lines.

Thanks.

I have no fear of running different cards. My history is about split equally between AMD and nvidia, with some 3Dfx and Rendition based boards on the side as well. (S3 and Trident cards before that as well. Those are getting into the pre 3D days!)

If your main game is Elite, and you also own a VR headset, it looks like nvidia is really the only game in town. Too bad. It's never nice to have no flexibility.

The aliasing on the orbit lines probably won't bug anyone. They seem to pop in and out and look like garbage anyways. The aliasing in this game is just crazy broken. I wish they would fix it. The is no excuse for stair crawling lines and warping textures at this point.

It's actually all curved navigational lines while in supercruise. While mostly just a cosmetic issue, I can imagine scooping a large star might be problematic. Exclusion zones are part of what's affected, and they can disappear at close range.

Yes.

For whatever reason, all of these single pixel lines on RX 6000 and 7000 series parts have broken anti-aliasing (separate and distinct from the rest of the aliasing issues in the game which apply equally to all GPUs). It's like it's only subtractive; if a subpixel is more black than the line color, the line isn't drawn.

Periodic terrain generation crashes are still there. They mostly happen in canyon and or I’m very hilly sections, such as mountainous craters with a lot of ravines. I’ll have to often fly close to the ground looking for concha or fungoid when it happens in these regions.

I'm wondering if this https://github.com/psychicEgg/EDHM/tree/main/Odyssey/3rdPartyMods/Thick-Orbit-Lines could help those having issues with orbit lines.
-i've not tested it and do not have the issue so i cannot know. Just wanted to let people know it might be an option.

Edit for posterity:
MrVaad made an actual fix for the orbit lines linked by morbad here:

cheers

Big THX for this info!
Tried it with my RX6900 XT, Orbit Lines Width with an ini value of 1 (10 on the slider) looks better now, still not perfect but at least less ants in space.

I set the Orbit Line Glow to 0.05 ( 0.0 was default/normal) and Orbit Line Width between 0.3 and 0.5 ( 0.0 was default/normal) and that seems a happy medium overall, with moderate improvement in the orbit lines without introducing too many new issues with the lines.

Overall, it's worth the mod but it doesn't resolve the issue - just makes it less noticeable. I've learned to live with the disappearing gravity lines but I definitely appreciate the enhancement this gives to the orbit lines.

Wow! This subject has is its own pin on the board and not a peep from FDEV about it. Nothing in this update (15)? I sure would like to play this game again.

Oh, and contrary to popular belief, the AA issues are not exclusive to orbit lines on AMD 6000 cards. AA is not functional period on my 6700 XT.

Odyssey in general has very prominent aliasing, but the AA filters still function, even on the RX 6000 series. The effect is very subtle, but it's there.

I've been running 22.5.1 for the longest time now, since it was identified as the last "safe" version of Adrenalin Edition. I don't use VR and I can probably live with the orbit lines issue (maybe try using the orbit lines mod mentioned above). I'd like to upgrade my drivers to get some better performance in other games, but I'd hate to go against the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" advice. Is it safe to upgrade the Adrenalin drivers post-update 15?

Even without any of the workarounds previously mentioned, crashing hasn't been an issue outside of VR since the 22.10.3 drivers and EDO Update 14 fixed the atmospheric rendering issue (the teal overlay).
