I must resist temptation and not buy one of those. Unless they give us original dev kit owners a nice little discount towards the new one of course! ;)

If you manage to resist buying one Memnoch, I will be in awe of your titanium strength willpower. I doubt I would last a day.

Does anyone think the next Dev Kit will be a lot more expensive?

Or do you think it will be around the same price as the current kit?

Well, the future is for the fools and gods to divine. Having said that, OculusVR has been quoted multiple times in stating that they intend to give an affordable finished products and they they are trying very hard to keep the final prices south of US300.00.

So, I'd expect that it will indeed be near that price, +of - a few percents.

No sub-system screens with Oculus Rift

I recently upgraded to the Alpha and have been having lots of fun with 3D... side by side (3dtv) and Oculus Rift. OR can be a pain to set-up but really immersive once it's working correctly. One thing i've notice though when using the Oculus Rift the sub-system screens are not present at all (left target lock info and right heat level, etc).

Does anybody know if this can be enabled at all or is it simply disabled when using the oculus?

Hi guys, I thought I'd upload some cropped Oculus Rift footage from the Alpha as an experiment. I've cropped out the left eye altogether and then cropped the peripheral from the right eye. So you can get an idea of what its like using the rift, you can't in-fact see the floor all the time. You can also see how the UI elements change. Sorry about the low resolution, sadly the dev kits are limited:

You know that you can choose a higher resolution than the Rift actually supports, right? And that this, in fact, improves the image quality on everything (that I've tried)? I run everything at 1920x1200 and it is always better than rendering at the native resolution.

I'll give it a try, thanks.

EDIT: Although anyone thinking about buying a dev kit, this is not far off how low res it looks!

Shadow problem while playing with Oculus

Does anybody else have shadow problems when playing with an Oculus Rift? I end up switching from high to low quality for shadows whenever there is an asteroid field and try not to get too close the the rocks themselves :)

(Running with HD7970)

You still need to highlight the screens using the buttons, this is a known issue.

Thanks for response. I'm not quite sure I follow, but if this is a known issue then I'm sure your onto fixing it. I'm able to move the 'ui focus' over to the screens and can hear them selecting but no visuals.

I had found a work-around for displaying one screen whereby I'd switch the graphics option back to 2D (3D Exp. OFF), use 'ui focus' to look at one of the sub-system screens, pause, and then re-enable 3D (3D Exp. OR). This would display one sub-system that I was looking at and would be entirely functional. But, I would then have the side-effect of the targeting reticle not displaying correctly: as though it was tracking with my head movement and I could see 2 reticles way too far apart.

Thanks for that, looks really amazing, way more immersive than the standard 1 monitor setup I currently have.

Although I do have a TrackIR5 on order, so I’m hoping to achieve 90% of the same result, but with the ability to still see around me. Anyone used both TrackIR and OR and know how well they compare?

Is that a 15 Kg package of Marching Dust you have in the cockpit at 0:20?

Love that, the immersion really looks good.

Does the 3D cockpit stand out?

really well. The targeting reticle floats in front of you, but my favourite thing is the original 3D scanner in actual 3D. 30 years on and its still doing the business!

I just don't know of another game geared so well for the rift.

That's it! I'm offically sulking now. :D

Would so love a Oculus Rift. Even if it was only to make my kids laugh at me. :D

That video looks awesome.

I have an Oculus Rift dev kit but have to wait until the Beta to try it out in Elite. It's a difficult wait after watching that video.

I think cockpit games are perfectly suited to the Rift. I use the Rift for a racing sim - iRacing - and it works great.

I’m actually nervous of the idea of an OR not because the wife or kids would laugh at me, but because they might take advantage of the fact I can’t see anything to quickly swap the mouse for a bowl of custard or something else devious.
