Interesting Times!

Is this a possible OculusVR/Frontier tie up?

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/211363/Inhouse_game_jam_leads_to_62M_development_contracts_for_Frontier.php
Cambridge-based Frontier runs an in-house competition called "Game of the Week" every so often, in which the studio's designers are asked to create small game prototypes based around specific limits. 2008 Wii game LostWinds originally came from a "Game of the Week" competition.

Now the company says that two more games created during these jams have been given the go-ahead, and "a major new global publishing partner" has splashed cash on making them happen.

Frontier notes that these two games, yet to be revealed, "will drive support for the partner's own hardware and technology eco-system," suggesting the unnamed publishing partner is also a hardware manufacturer.
Anybody from Frontier able to comment?

Could be just wishful thinking of course, could be Amazon and their rumoured new box I guess.

On a slightly different note:

Sony set to reveal PS4 virtual reality headset at GDC 2014.
Rumours of Sony's PS4 virtual reality headset have been running rife since last year, but now an inside source has told TechRadar that they've spent some time with the helmet behind closed doors - and it's almost ready to be revealed.

Our confidential tipster said that they were impressed with the quality of Sony's Oculus Rift competitor. "The quality and resolution are really, really good," they said. "People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built".

They also told us that they understand Sony plans to announce the headset at GDC 2014, which kicks off in San Francisco on March 17.

I heard similar rumors from my contact. Devkit 2 is coming very, very soon. According to my info you should wait for the consumer version though. DK2 is primarily meant for devs to be able to adapt their software to the new TrackIR-like positioning system. Apparently the DK2 will still be limited compared to what we'll eventually see in the consumer version, though I dunno what he meant exactly by limited.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I agree OR will probably be the ideal way to play games like Elite. Problem is Elite will likely be finished long before OR. At least they expect the OR to be available within the next two years and ED is coming out this year.

I thought the aim was for or to be out at the back end of this year and with a v2 dev kit out so that software guys can get their support for the full features nailed on consumer release.

I am probably wrong however

Sounds like fun. I'll be watching assuming of course that I can get twitch to co-operate since it was a real pain to watch Kerrash Landing's stream at the weekend. I'll stock up on some sick bags as well just in case though ;)

Will we need sick bags?
I never go anywhere without this Buti. It is totally sick.

Dear sirs and madams...

I will attempt to combine and use the Track IR System along with the Oculus Rift (Asuming delivery is OK and all is well).

I will of course let you know once everything is in place...

Hi psykokow

Have you used an OR before? If not it might be worth giving it a spin a few times before you try your experiment...steady your VR legs first..:)

not run config yet lol

I wasn't 100% this morning anyway.. so this is just setting it off further.. and yes I am sensitive to bob in games..

HOWEVER!!!!! I WILL ON!! and use my son as a guineapig!!!

haha yeah controlled experiments using (un?)willing volunteers is whats called for!

Once you've sorted the config for both yourself and your son and you've got the right lenses in for you, have a whirl of Titans of space its the perfect introductionary demo to try and get used to the rift with.

I found it took me a few goes a night for a few nights before I could play indefinitely. (My dad however played warthunder for 3 hours straight on his first go the nutter)

Also its usually best to run games with the graphics settings on low so its smooth and work your way up until you find the right balance between fps and graphical detail.

I tried this in work and it didn't work btw. Oculus overrides any other form of head control in the game.

Mike,

If you had mentioned this earlier it could have saved a poor scot from a headache, nusea and vomiting...oh wait
