ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

Does it need balancing? Well, the general consensus on the forums seems to be that peripherals are a person's own choice and that's just the way it is - if one is better than another then it's just tough on the people with the "lesser" hardware, but software advantages (3rd person/HUD-only views) should not be allowed (even though the gains of an OR/HOTAS setup will be much more significant IMHO).

Completely agree with this!. Just because an individual does not want to use certain tools should NOT muck it up for people who do.

Otherwise where do you draw the line? You would end up with a scenario where everything is catered for KM/M users and a mess for everyone else (AKA WarThunder)

I dont have one yet, but am fully committed to either a Dev kit V2 or a consumer rift, and a large part of that is because of ED.

And again, this is completely different from supporting 3rd person view etc as any advantage delivered by OR is becasue makes the game MORE realistic and closer to the vision of the devs and isnt a nonsense "cheat" which makes no sense in reality.

** I dont personally have a problem with outside views outside of combat for possible screenshot / video purposes or just eye candy, or the option of adding these into recorded "replay" footage for the same reason.

I also own a Rift dev kit and am luckily for me in the camp that doesnt feel any motion sickness at all using it.

Don't take this wrong.... I hate you, the horse you road in on, AND the blacksmith making the shoes for the horse!

I can't go 30 minutes without feeling a bit queezy. I am still trying to get some cable temple glasses so they will fit inside the OR frame. My current glasses are too wide. I am tempted to do some cutouts for my glasses frames so they not wedge in and get stuck.

Good to hear though that not everyone suffers as I do. Congrats!

It's worth noting that all of the big cheeses at OR wear glasses. The DK1 is crude - even their creator Palmer Luckey says so. The consumer version will be much more spectacles friendly, and have superior optics. You shoild be OK.

The motion sickness thing: OR have radically changed the tech in the current prototypes. Motion sickness is now much better understood in VR, and should be totally sorted in the consumer version. The current prototypes are already acknowledged as being practically there in this respect.

lol ah mate, yeah that sucks sorry to hear that, you have my commiserations. I take it contacts arent an option for you then?

They will have a much more user friendly set up for glasses wearers in the consumer release though Im sure of it.

Roll on Dev-kit 2. :) Is it time to start F5'ing the OR pages????

If you think the OR is a pain with glasses, you should try Google Glass - it's a real pain in the "nose", and to boot, you look like a pillock!!! (but it's just as cool a tech as the OR is).

This talk by Michael Abrash (Valve) is particularly informative.

That was interesting and not a little exciting but I'm still not really convinced. For me - I guess time will tell whether its worth the cash. Perhaps in a couple of years I'll be proclaiming the awesomeness of OR from the cockpit of my shiny new Panther Clipper- but then maybe not...

Panther Clippers are expensive! ;)

Funny, I went to that site. I seen Star Citizen as well as Eve but nothing about Elite.

It's a conspiracy I say! An evil conspiracy to ignore Elite!!!

I sent ben at roadtovr.com an email asking they add Elite to the list. It was mostly polite. Unfortunately, I am incapable of doing more than mostly when it comes to being polite. To many years in IT listening to idiots telling me they didn't share their facebook password with anyone and that it was not coincidentally the same one as their AD account password. sigh.

Lets see how long it takes to respond....

Well, I wouldn't hold your breath for them to add Elite to the Oculus games list - I sent them one about a month or so ago with no response or update. :)

For those in the south east and curious about the rift the new prototype rift is meant to be at the GEEK2014 this weekend. Sadly the only confirmed version of elite is running on the archamedes but still. Despite gagging to buy one I have not yet had the pleasure

Small update:

For anyone considering purchasing a DevKit Mk1, you might want to reconsider...

OculusVR are about to stop selling DK1.
Certain components used in the Oculus Rift developer kit are no longer being manufactured, meaning they are no longer available to us for production. As a result, we don't have the necessary materials to produce additional kits. We still have some stock available, but we're quickly running out. We are looking into alternate sources for the needed components, and we don't yet have a timeline for when additional units will be available. We'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

As we sell out of inventory in each region we plan to suspend sales in that region until we are able to deliver new orders. Currently we are only selling and shipping to the following countries:

United States
Canada
Countries in the European Union
Japan
South Korea
Australia
Switzerland
Norway

We never expected to sell so many development kits and VR only made this much progress with the community's support and enthusiasm. Even though we never wanted to sell out, it's a good problem to have -- Thank you!
So... it really looks like DK2 (supposedly functionally equivalent to the final consumer version) is reasonably imminent, possibly being unveiled as soon as next month at GDR14.

This is just my initial thought to the post, but it seems to be that Oculus running out of parts for the DK1 due to those parts no longer being manufactured, is quite different from a DK2 kit being available soon.

I agree that it is likely to be unveiled at GDR14 - but that still doesn't give us any indication that it will be on sale any time "soon". If I were to pull a random date out the air, I suspect we won't be able to buy DK2 until June / July at the very earliest, and even that will be in limited supply.

But in either event - I would be disinclined to connect a lack of DK1 parts as meaning DK2 is on the way...but then I could be totally wrong on that. :D

I tend to agree with you, particularly when I read the line "We are looking into alternate sources for the needed components, and we don't yet have a timeline for when additional units will be available" when talking about DK1. That kind of sounds like the near term goal is to produce more DK1s... but maybe they're sandbagging.

Hello Oculus Rift owners. Gaming in my house is now mostly with an audience. With this in mind I have a question - with the Oculus Rift, what does the main computer screen show? Does it move with the OR or stay fixed on a single point. I am especialy thinking of how it will behave with E: D. Thanks!

It should be possible or even commong to set your monitor to mirror, then the audience sees what you're seeing. It will look slightly distorted though and googly.

My main problem is the width of my skull. I wear xxl hats, and an xxxl motorcycle helmet. Hats and shoes are a to find.

As for contacts.... Eeeehh. No. I can't even use eye drops. I am one of those people who cannot open their eyes under water. Cannot stand the feel of anything briefly touching my eyes, let alone something sitting on them.

I so look forward to the crystal cove version to see if it is bigger...

Oculus Rift and Elite Dangerous

RIGHT ON COMMANDER!:)

Hey everyone. I loved the original games to death, and am absolutely over the moon about this title. But have you seen it with Oculus Rift glasses? Holy crab cakes!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6fIlV1lVSA

I want this game so bad, and think it should be bundled with Oculus Rift when shipping starts. It is a marriage made in heaven. I will never leave my armchair again.. :D

One concern though. Hardware specs, if I want to max the game settings. All we have at the moment is laptops/tablets and a PS3. So I will be buying a rig, just to play Elite Dangerous. I know, I know... So what should I be looking to get, if I want the full Monty?

And another thing!:D Is it confermed for PS4?

Thats all from me for now. Cant wait...

See you all out there soon!

Commander Globusdiablo :)
