yeah, most of us know our way around the keyboard blindfolded.. like playing TF2 in the dark....

Its not ideal... but its fine

thats the speculation due to the part not being made for DK1,,

...

I still think Q3 Dk 2 and Q4 Retail... I THINK!!!

Indeed... and the fact that John Carmack has specifically mentioned a DK2! ;)

Your estimate sounds reasonable but I wouldn't be surprised if the retail is pushed back from that.

The only things mentioned so far is Q3, that DK2 will be out very close to the final retail..
and that DK1 is no longer being produced so once stock is gone its gone.

Thats the facts as we know..

Anything else is speculation...

SO Q1, which is nearly over
Q2 so 3 - 4 months is when we can expect DK2 approximately..

So 3 months of stock to sell? Is it wise to buy DK1...

My hope and reason for doing so is simple... I'm wanting them to offer the Dk2 to us first :D.... as owners of the DK1..

Or pre order the first run of retail units... Im easy either way..
:D

Again... THINKING not fact...

Taken your advice. Installed FaceTrackNOIR, got it tracking my face ok in the FTNOIR software but it won't work with ED alpha. Apparently the TrackIR API that ED uses is encrypted so "free" clones won't work with it - you need the official TrackIR and that's not a cheap option. There's supposed to be a suboptimal workaround using the VJoy virtual joystick but I can't it working for me - probably due to lack of multiple controller support in ED at the moment (I also have a HOTAS).

So, thanks for the idea, I got excited, but it doesn't work at the moment! Fingers crossed FD will put in native support for Freetrack API.

That is really unfortunate, & I really hope it's just a case of FD haven't implemented the freeware APIs yet. I really love my TrackIR & how well it works, but as a company NaturalPoint have a reputation for being highly anti-competition and of throwing their weight around so that alternatives, or the freeware solutions don't get a chance. It's disgusting behaviour, & it's another reason I'm hoping the OR lives up to its promise, so that I can stop using their products.

In regards to control setup; using keyboard and mouse with the Rift is a natural combination. And works just as well with the Rift as it does with a monitor.

In regards to "seeing" the keyboard. This may be a problem for people that need to look at the keyboard to know where the keys are. For those that can 'touch type' or know their way around a keyboard it is not a problem at all.

There are cheap head tracking alternatives if it bothers you, OR seems like many people are having to use it for limited periods of time only and i doubt it will ever be common, what with the restricted contact most players will have with other players in such a big play area i can't see a problem.

If you WANT to fight other players on an even footing then you'll have to buy one or look into the head tracking alternatives.

I dont want one, i don't want to be sealed off in a headset, but i did buy an X52 pro and got an extra two monitors set up and ready to go and will be sorting out head tracking if i think it's needed for the way i'm planning on playing.

To be honest alpha isn't really grabbing me at the moment because dog fighting is not what interests me and i suspect that bigger ships with lots of turrets and gimballed weapons really wont need to worry to much about seeing where the enemy has gone and will spend more time allocating power and doing running repairs rather than chasing after sidewinders out the windows.

If I'm in a Panther or an Anaconda you wont need OR to see where I've gone.

As some who has a OR dev kit I'd agree with others here as to it giving an advantage. It really does place you in there, in the ship and is great for immersion.

That said though, I hear where you are coming from and like your style of thinking there. I really do hope there are loads more people that want to play the game in your fashion than those just seeking the dog fight and kill all the time.

In respects to the dog fighting, I'd like to see a ship like the sidewinder take 2-3 times more damage before she goes bang. I really do not like the paper kite feeling we're getting in the Alpha. The Sidewinder (to me) should be like a mini tank and the larger ships should soak up even more damage.

My son LOVES the oculus and has found some amazing things...

for games and demos..

Sorry if this has been mentioned before.. but I had to say it..

Titans of Space is a demo (Free) or game or app soemthing that gives you a tour of our universe using the Oculus to great effect..

IF you haven't seen it, or tried it... I ORDER you to.

Enjoy Commanders..

I've mentioned it a couple of times at least; still one of my favourite experiences with the Rift. The music matches the tour perfectly too.

IT is an absolute must have for the oculus... please excuse me I am late to the party, but when your kid finds the 'cool' stuff for you it is something you have to share and RAM down people throats for their own good.

Free is an awesome price, and that Titans of Space is worth a pretty penny... but it sparks my 'wow' and 'educational value' feelings for the oculus.

I remember my first time watching a star projection display in an obervatory and was blown away by it, it ignited my interest in the stars.... now put that display into an oculus and suddenly its even more special and wonderful.

Then add natural world programs... and suddenly the oculus becomes one of the most significant inventions for education I have ever seen, and NOT overly expensive at this time.

I am excited and hopeful it is developed well into education...

ooh hold one while i step down off this soap box.
there...better..

I am genuinely excited by that 1 programs, and all the potential it shows in how stunning a tool the oculus could be..

imagine underwater documentary in oculus 360,,,,,,wow.

I think i need another lie down...

Affordable and decent VR will have a big impact on a lot of things... I read that Ford were using the dev kits in their car design work. There are several demos where you can walk around regular houses/buildings bringing architectural plans to life. Have you tried the cinema app - http://www.riftenabled.com/admin/app/182 ? Too low res at the moment to actually watch a whole film but it shows where this can go... upgrade your 50" TV to a 80" for a bigger experience, or plop on a Rift and have a cinema sized screen to watch the film? It's quite cool anyway. :)

Pop in, reads posts, seethes with jealousy, resists urge to ban the lot of you..:D

As they have stopped production of DK1 I like may others are hoping for some news soon, I'm looking forward to experiencing ED and other games with the OR and hopefully 3D Films as well. I can't imagine how good Gravity in 3D would look on a OR.

Mine's on eBay if you want. ;) Hoping to recover all the money I paid for it though, they're selling well, and even making profits.

I think the resolution (even at 1080p) will be an issue for the Rift for a while. When you consider you're watching 4K at the cinema even 4K on the Rift won't equal that. You still have to have a border of some sort as the virtual screen could not completely fill your vision or you'd have to move your head all the time to see various parts - imagine sitting closer to the cinema screen than even the first row (which is bad enough). But 4K will certainly give an amazing experience... and possibly even 2K will be quite decent.

You'll easily make a profit on it.

Can't believe some are trying to sell the kit for £350+

Just waiting to see what OR say about the next version.

Guy goes to Valve and tries their prototype headset. (slightly better than Crystal Cove, Oculus consumer expected to be better again).

LINK.

I've tried the OR in Alpha and the gameplay and head tracking in combat is awesome, but until they come out with a high resolution version I won't even think about purchasing a retail version. Anything that is text or when a ship gets some distance is just so bitty and blurry that it detracts from the game. It is an advantage but if you suck balls at flying and combat anyway (hand up) then it's not going to help that much and just evens the score a bit.

However, it is so natural to swing your head to follow ships during combat - more so than track IR - but whilst you have the OR on, you can't see any buttons on joystick/HOTAS/keyboard so it becomes all about feel so as for playing the game in it's entirety, I don't see how it will be any easier.

Then again, when I was playing the original, it was really easy when your ship was armed and shielded to the teeth so unless everyone gets the same ship and load out, of course some will be at an advantage - life is not fair, not even pretend ones.

OK when you have the oculus you get distracted very easily by frankly anything..

I hereby declare it a disadvantage... it leaves you OOHing and Aaah ing and totally open to being attacked!!

LOVE IT all the same.
