Every Build I Create Has Auto Dock

Autodock is too slow and doesn't understand peak performance like using shields as brakes.

You've obviously never watched the ADC land an 851m/sec iCourier at a surface installation. ;)

It slams the ship into the pad so hard that the shield lights up like an xmas tree and then bounces about 20m back up into the air!

I don't hate autodock and actually have no issue in others using it if that's what they want to do. I just prefer not to use it myself as I enjoy manual landing, especially on outposts. I've been using flight assist a lot recently just because it saves so much time entering signal sources.

Ah no I meant some specific people, gankers actually. By the way, flight assist and supercruise assist are two different things. Love supercruise assist.

I personally enjoy approaching a station / outpost / planetary port and dock, just like in flying sims it's the part between takeoff and landing that usually bores me, but I couldn't possibly care less if others choose to use a DC or not in their game. Freedom to the people!

Seems a bit of a waste, considering smaller ships tend to have fewer slots and tend to be easy to park, but... if it works for you, enjoy!

That said, if I'm just running a series of errands, or feel like taking a bit of a break with a larger ship, I often fit an ADC as well.

I swap it out for a backup AFMU on my deep exploration ship before I head out though, since I'd rather have the backup and I'm not going to be landing much at fixed locations.

Real pilots start off with auto-dock because they need it, then do without it to check they have the skills to dock manually, then go back to using auto-dock because it's convenient. Also supercruise assist.

This...

But when I'm trading, I still ram an unshielded, fully loaded, T9 through the slot at 220 m/s when I'm on pad 10, 25 or 40 and then throttle to zero for the touch down 😎
Besides, the DC docks the T9 too low and scraps the paint... Usually with a few % hull damage. It's OK undocking though for some reason! 🧐

I've never gotten around to using any of the autopilot type stuff other than calling my ships back down and flight assist. I'm not necessarily apposed to it, but not something I'm particularly looking for from the game either. To each their own.

I prefer using the smaller ships too though, so that could be part of it.

The thing is, I'm not a real pilot. So when I arrive from whatever the hell I was doing, for however long I've been doing it, I want a goddam computer to dock my ship and a bit of classical music to play me in. It's a lifestyle. In a way, it's a personal mini-challenge. It is a slot permanently reserved, wasted and frivolously enjoyed for no reason any rational pilot would ever approve of.
Years ago, I was combat elite, and a heavy hitting powerplay underminer, and my interdiction patrol ship had a big scoop, a big interdictor and a basic docking computer on it. It wasn't that I couldn't land, it was just a nice way of getting a couple of minutes rest, enjoy the luxury.
I know real pilots don't auto dock

I salute every single one of you anti-auto dockers. You are better people, and certainly better pilots.
I fly 100% flight assist off, and even yet, on my mission runner ships I often carry an advanced docking computer, ususally I've got 3 or 4 missions onboard, so if I'm being lazy ir efficient, as I approach mission destination 1, I request docking, activate docking computer, and hit the galaxy map to plot a route to the next mission's destination.

Whoever thought of using this piece in the game is an absolute star. The Beautiful Blue Danube - André Rieu - YouTube
Credit goes to Stanley Kubrik for his use of it in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". I've never seen the movie, but I have seen others referring to this clip:

Yeah, I don't think the modular design of outfitting is particularly elegant these days (my personal bugbear are those large size sensors), and I do agree that DC/SCA should've really been made standard ship comptuer features as opposed to individual modules (given we got the additional slots so outfitting balancing was only impacted slightly for the larger ships). I also wish we had a universal limpet controller, and instead would just buy limpets of the various functionalities instead.
I've said numerous times that what we need is an electronics rack, that can in itself has slots, and can be populated with computer modules, such as autodock and limpet controllers, somewhat akin to a server rack in the world of today's enterprise computing.

I use an autodoc all the time on my Type 10. Rarely if ever do I have to wait in a que. I strongly suspect that the game prioritizes large ships when assigning docking privileges. When your ship is giant slab, you get priority!
