I just came across this thread and this discussion has, seemingly, already been ongoing for quite some time.

I'm rather depressed that it exists at all.

What do people want? World of War Spaceships?

Are you suggesting that external views are an aspect of arcadey type games?

Microsoft Flight Simulator, ARMA, X-Plane, DCS and indeed every single serious flight sim ever made all have external views, and literally no one in their right minds would actually fly in combat or for precision flight using an external view in any of them.

So no, we dont want World of War Spaceships, we want to see our ships up close, flying thru asteroid belts and around stations, we want to see, without a HUD, our ships floating past a backdrop of attack ships off the shoulders of Orion and C Beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate, and while we don't see these things, they are being lost in time, like tears in the rain.

But anyway, serious sims do it, arcade games do it, semi serious games do it, Elite Dangerous doesn't. This should be fixed.

I'm sad we don't have any rear-view mirror. And turn signal. This is immersion breaking.
No just ridiculously stupid, that in 1200 plus years humanity didn't think of a rear view camera in the cockpit of a spacecraft... brain degeneration started in the 20th century it seems.

A space SIMULATION game like any other serious Simulation game? DCS World, FSX , I-War, I-War 2, Elite II: Frontier just to name a few... all with external cams to rotate around your craft and admire the model/environment. Plain and ridiculously simple!

I'm proposing its available during combat. I'd simply like a simple set of limitations/nerfs that means in such a situation it offers no true advantage, and instead in all likelyhood a disadvantage ;)

I think a simple consistent behaviour that doesn't have loads of IFs and BUTs depending on THIS, THAT and THE OTHER is the key to it. Just make it adhere to a simple set of rules (limitation) that is fair across the board.

Well, good luck with that. Given what they've said on the subject, there's never going to be a combat-available 3rd person view, unless they do a complete 180.

My $0.02:

I think an in game external camera is unnecessary, but a replay editor would be great.

It wouldn't even need to be much work from FD. They would need to publish a file format for the replays.
The replays themselves would only need to record the initial start position and location of the ship; the stars, planets, etc, could then be simulated using the procedural engine. Players, NPCs, etc would need standard ship data (position, orientation, weapons, cargo scoops, etc) recorded in realtime.
Then allow a camera position to be specified in the replay data.

After that, just use the Eagle engine to render the replay data. This wouldn't even need to happen in real time (so we could have 60fps 4k ultra movies).

Once the community has those tools, the replay editing/camera position tools could be written by the community and the rendered clips could then be composited in your video editor of choice. Imagine the awesome movies....

I'm pretty sure that this kind of solution requires quite more work than an external camera. It is also not relevant regarding our request, here. Replaying some actions could be nice, but we're not asking for that. We just want to look at the scenery, and play around with the framing. While ingame. And that's it, really.

External Camera View & Flyby

Hi Folks,

Is the external camera view now planned or did I miss something?

If FD implements an external camera view I'd love to see:

- One or more Flyby cameras. There's nothing cooler that watch yourself fly towards, close up and vanish to a virtual camera. I loved that in Battlefield 1942. Unfortunately, they took out the feature in later BFs. A Flyby Camera just gives the game much more cinematic effect.

- Hangar view where I can fly around my ship and watch it from every angle. Also zoom in etc.

- Free defineable camera positions where the player can set the angle the view angle etc. on his ship.

What do you thing?

While a replay feature would be great, I think it's a very different solution/requirement to an external view. External view is more immediate and simply to be used when you want to be enjoy/capture the moment. Having to duck out of the game and FF & RWD through a "recording" is very different IMHO.

It also sounds a lot more work than an external view, which almost certainly is already in the game engine to some degree even now...

Not going to read 200 pages. SO, HAS FlyBy Cam already been discussed.

I would.love this feature to be implemented. It gives the game a Cinematic Feeling.
TOTAL MUST from my poimnt of view.

If you fear dockfight might suffer, use it to your advantage.

FD, introduce an external cam view and I will purchase a skin for my ship instantly. The sooner you do it the sooner you get (more of) my money :)

+1
I was admiring all the skins for sale today. I nearly bought the Asp pack. Then I looked at my Asp in the hangar! One view, the blurry outline of the HUD when you "disable" it? No purchase necessary.

So yes, external views please. A flyby perhaps?

The revenue from skins would, I surmise, pay for the extra dev work!

These ships are works of art, so let's see them, especially our own:)

FDev has acknowledged the interest in an external view. In the quote below, Sandro details their intent and the limitations that they want 3PV to have.

I think that it is a great compromise.

Hello Folk!

To add a little developer clarification:

We are looking at external camera views, with the following caveats:

* They are contextualised as camera/drone systems
* They are not designed to be used as alternate flight views
* Their primary function is to allow "beauty shots"
* They may have occasional tertiary game play functions (such as seeing how close you are to something)

No ETA at the moment though.

Hope this helps.

Yep, this veeeeery old post with just some blabla was posted frequently in this thread, in an attempt to stop people from asking for a basic external camera... yet it is not what most people want, requires much effort from the developers, and is not even an "announcement" that it will happen.

- simple external rotating camera and fly-by (already in the game engine for the Frontier developers)
- no HUD or flight info
- no fixed alignment to players ship when moving
- limit as option to Solo mode

Done!

I'd love to have external view. It's up to every commander if you want to use it or not but to be able to admire your ship from outside and take some pictures while travelling will be nice.

Yes: a Simple external ship viewer None Combat!

Why will someone buy paint pack for ship if they can't see them...only in hangar...

pls add some 3rd non combat camera mode...pls

Is it just me, or is it absolutely infuriating that we can never see what our ships look like from the outside. And don't say I can see it in outfitting, because I can't. I can't even clear the screen of menus so I could have a look. Or maybe be able to strafe and zoom around it?

Sometimes when outfitting, I have no clue where the hardpoint actually is, because I can't see where it is on the ship.

And how about some kind of external cam for when leaving spaceports, or cruising past friends?

Pull your socks up FD

Come on FD. Give us external views already. No hud, just views.

To be honest, I have inspected some ship models with a friend of mine (2 accounts) and it looks like most of our ships are not fully modelled yet (hence no external views). eg: no geometry or textures inside landing gear bay, when extended. lots of little touches missing. Just another unfinished part of the game.
