HIP98481 246.47 4 1965.6 -94.0, -977.0, 1703.0
HIP98501 269.07 4 2219.2 -13.0,-1123.0, 1914.0
HIP98588 587.57 8 2145.7 -570.0, -953.0, 1836.0

And here's the rest.

Hi Iron Body - I hate to have to say it, but the HIPs you need are the ones on rows 98090 - 98590, rather than HIP 98090 - 98590.

That said, so you don't waste the bookmarking you have already done - these ones are definitely targets so it is worth going to them:

OK, good job I didn't get too far. And BTW, I am working from a copy of your speadsheet.

I don't actually bookmark the stars, all I need is a rough estimate of their ED coordinates, within one jump, say 70ly, is usually good enough.
I then feed the data into mathematica which gives a good estimate for the shortest path.

I see that columns V and X have formulae for the X and Z coordinates, taken from the (distance, lat and long) data in the catalogues, I take it.
Is there a reason you didn't put in the column W formula for the Y coordinate ? Possibly because of larger errors in the Distance data ?
Effectively, I see we are transforming the catalogue 3D polar coordinates to ED's rectangular system.

On the whole the ED data seems a reasonable fit to the catalogue data. Maybe the catalogue data on it's own is sufficient to calculate a route without too many diversions.
Nevertheless, I will fill in the W column manually for now, and then compare the results with a calculated value.

PS.. It was a good exercise in getting my route planning system working again. I originally wrote it for plotting ELWs during DW2.
PPS I hope this is intelligible.

The idea was that it's easy to see the height from the galmap, whereas to get the others you have to faff about a little. Put a height into the column and it can guess the others based on the direction. It doesn't use the catalog distance directly because they're not a good map to the actual distances in the game. Unfortunately, when I first made the sheet I used J2000 and it turns out Elite is going off B1950, so the estimates it gives are a little off - at some point I plan to put the B1950 coords in as well and change the formula to work off those.

Jackie, very nice initiative!

I would be interested in joining. Because I am a bit new to this, I think I should start with slice 55 with not so much entries like the other slices.

Currently in the bubble refueling my carrier V.P.I. Circus Maximus and finishing a Generation ship tour, so I guess I could start next week. CMDR name in game is ToMuc.

I was working from a copy of my rows in excel, but then switched to a copy of the google spreadsheet. This copy just has my rows in it, copied yesterday, so it's not up to date with any coordinates that will get filled in after that. But I'm keeping notes of non-standard names in-game, and ones that don't seem to exist (marked with "X" in the notes field). Since I sorted by distance, large to small, the ones I've been hitting so far are pretty spread out. Some are way out in Temple or the far end of the IOS, which I'll go visit when I'm reasonably sure I don't have any more popping up out there. I can only bookmark maybe about 10 at a time, these days. ;)

I've reached all the "easy" HIPs in slice 47 - these ones that are left are well above or below the plane. Bringing my carrier back from Six Rings to refuel now.

Also: I have Rapper's Delight stuck in my head...

I have almost cleared slice 42 out past Witch Head nebula, there aren't anymore except a few to high or to low even for FC's, so when the Gam Nine heads further out I may start coming back in to get ones closer to the bubble.

Have you got the names of the really high / low ones?

I've got four out here, but I think HD 107924 is actually out of range of the galaxy map altogether, it appears then vanishes after a moment.

HD 98685, HD 8392, HD 107924, HD 107218.

I think there are more closer to the bubble but I haven't really got around to looking closely at those ones.
Thanks - I’ll look them up on my sheet. The galaxy map has a strange limit whereby you can’t target anything above +9015, or anything below -10,985. So there’s a 20kLY range limit on the Y axis.

Progress report ....

I have managed to get good X,Y,Z estimates for all HIP stars in sector 14 from the galmap.
It was easier than I thought. By a combination of a widescreen display and voice attack, I managed to get nearly all done with only shuffling the mouse between ED and Excel.
I did get funny looks from the missus though, having to say "copy paste go 1 2 4 tab 3 2 6 tab 2 3 4" all evening was a bit strange. But it did mean little or no typing.
Apart from voice attack not fully understanding "nine", it wasn't too bad.

I have an optimised plan for visiting all 426 valid HIP stars, which starts off ..
Star,sol,jumps,X,Y,Z
HIP 106622 913.41 13 913.4 -870.0, -246.0, 130.0
HIP 107446 50.25 1 896.1 -840.0, -286.0, 125.0
HIP 107666 13.08 1 903.7 -845.0, -297.0, 120.0
HIP 108928 58.38 1 879.2 -813.0, -325.0, 80.0
HIP 108444 55.87 1 921.9 -845.0, -349.0, 119.0
HIP 108904 56.24 1 973.6 -892.0, -376.0, 104.0
HIP 110044 66.54 1 934.6 -854.8, -374.8, 48.9
HIP 108831 67.86 1 923.9 -868.0, -310.0, 64.0

You will see that many of them are only a single jump away from each other, at least to start with.

There are a few outliers which I haven't included in the route, because I'm not yet sure whether they are reachable or not.
I will look at them in more detail when I get closer to that region.
HD 181596 -17205 5088 2535
HD 178796 -18032 6049 2523
HIP 101289 -21545 950 2780 (may be reachable)
HIP 99599 -26793 3369 3091
HD 235044 -22727 4949 1342

I also have all the ED names in sector 14, plus markers for those which don't exist.
Let me know how best to update the main spreadsheet.
