Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

Well, not being a native speaker I perhaps didn't fully understand what "make it or break it" means. I really didn't mean it in a "I will definitely never EVER come back to Elite if Q4 does not deliver!" way. More in a "I'm going to have a very long break" instead :)

Q4 and whats announced for after Q4 is the tipping point for me

No ... been playing since Premium Beta and there's still *loads* I've not done yet ...

Currently scanning an entire 13,000 system sub-sector for the lolz [yesnod]

That's a bit extreme. I'm not stupid enough to say if Q4 of this year, or indeed even ED 4.0 does not float my boat, that I couldn't then envisage ED 5.0 haviing something that might.

That said, given the generally poorly designed, shallow bolt on gameplay that's basically dominated the past 2-3yr of the game, if Q4 of this year (chapter 4 or its DLC), or ED 4.0 doesn't show some impressive game design and depth, I cannot envisage how that issue will ever be addressed then...

In short, most of last year I simply lost interest in the game due to the habitually poor/shallow development. This year I've not even touched it. I sincerely hope Q4 will entice me back, but that will need a significant change of design ethos and quality... I've seen previous little over the past 2-3yrs to inspire that hope!

I'm too lazy to write the exact same stuff in different words, so here you go. Precisely my thoughts, to the letter.

For me I think it was multipew the straw which broke the camel's back, haven't had any desire to play since. That's not to say that what is broken can't be glued back together, it just seems that for the time being, FDEV is all out of glue.

Hmm... tough question. I'd like to take my frustrations out on this thread and say HELL YES; but the truth is probably not. Elite is amazing even for what it is, and in VR it's a game I didn't think I'd live long enough to play when I was a kid.

I have high hopes for Q4 and would love some new paid content as well, but I think even if it's a mess I'll probably still play as much as I do. Admittedly that's not as much as many; I like to do micro breaks of a week or so fairly regularly.

Anyway there's a guy here with an amazing cartoon of a bunch of angry ships with protest signs and a little Sidey off by himself celebrating Elite in a one ship counter-protest for his sig block... I think the brutal reality is I hope to be that guy when I grow up. :)

No. I like flying spaceships and there's no other game that comes even close. A modern Elite remake is all I was hoping for when I bought in, and we've got that and a lot more already.

New and extra stuff would be nice, and is coming and I'll probably play more once it drops but either way ED's a permanent install (until the sequel).

I've never understood why anyone would buy a game because of potential future content/feature X. Wait and see would be a better approach if X is important to you.

I enjoy the game as it is, my main concern with new features is that they don't disrupt my existing playstyle (as 2.1 did for example). If it adds to it (as 3.0 did) then that's great ;)

I already took a break last year. I didn't play for the most part of 2017. However, I lost much of my faith in the development of this game back when they released the disgusting known as the engineers.

It's pretty crystal clear at this point they have a singular vision for the game and do not want to change it. I'll take any update regardless of what they have to offer, if they are good then great, if not then tough cookies. I'll just play a better game like EVE online.

I can't think of the last time I logged into the game, several months at least. I'm hoping the Q4 update will have something to entice me back into the black, but I'll not be holding my breath.

I guess I just don't understand the "they better do X or else I'm quitting" mentality. I take this game for what it presents itself to be. It is essentially a sort of Second Life in space. You get to experience an "existence" in the future, engaging in a lifelong career. The social aspects both in-game and via enthusiast websites like Inara.cz allow you to role play as deeply as you feel inclined. Even in space, life is largely boring and repetitive...just like in Real Life. Perhaps more so. I suspect these same people are routinely bored with RL. I pity those people. Meanwhile, I can just about as much enjoyment in the mundane as in the chaotic. The beauty of it is, in ED, I can choose which I experience. The developers ARE making incremental improvements over time, and I welcome them. I'm NOT demanding this game BE something else. I didn't start playing this game for it to become another Call of Duty or Doom or whatever. I started to playing so I could feel like I was flying space ships. Getting to have a "career" of any type while doing that is a bonus. There is no such thing as "make or break" for me. This is not a game you can "win"...it's to be lived. As such, it is virtually infinite. For me, I'll continue to fly my ships and do my thing.

Make or break? It's already broken.

It's coming up to FOUR years, I very much doubt they can magically fix the parts of the game that are fundamentally broken through poor design decisions exacerbated by FD digging their heels in and ensuring focus goes to anything and everything but quality of experience. No matter how many catchphrases are thrown out, the experience at a very basic level is still painful. Broken missions, poorly designed features that remain incomplete for years, revoked missions, inability to find content without third party tools, (heck we don't even hear about the livestreams on THIS website!) an emergent threat that poses no threat whatsoever, and has zero response from either AI or NPC. Elite Dangerous is heart-breakingly beautiful, and utterly hollow when it comes to knowing how to engage its playerbase. If there's one thing I hope FD learn, it's that pleasing shareholders shouldn't be at the detriment of pleasing players. Find what makes a game fun, - it sure as heck isn't EBITDA.

No... it won't be make or break ED:H for me an early kickstarter backer with 1000's of hours "play";
However, I'm beginning to despair of FDev's approach to "enjoyable" play...… (THE ability to play ED:H the many individual and varied ways possible, usually needs CREDITS!!!!! bucket loads of credits!!!)...……

FDev seem to jump (instantly) on any method of making easy cash, gleefully and with both feet (aided by certain selfish killjoy "commanders" with their "please FDev nerf this exploit it's spoiling my IMMURSHUN!!" bug reports, posts, tweets, grumbles, whines, etc etc.).

FDev need to make ED:H as ENJOYABLE to PLAY as possible for the biggest number of commanders, and ALL commanders need to understand that their own specific way of playing ED:H is NOT exclusive of all other methodologies!

Whatever ED:H Chapter Four Beyond may bring, may it be ENJOYABLE for the biggest number of players new and old!

After this passage of time and my ongoing investment I live in hope!

I've seen that comment many times in various places. I tend to refer to Q4 update as "make it or break it" as well, when it comes to my involvement in Elite.

There sure is a lot of hope and expectations for Chapter 4 in the large part of the community, judging by the comments all over the internet, be it these forums, other forums, various Discord severs nad social media platforms...

So just wondering how many people feel similar. Is Chapter 4 going to be "make it or break it" for you?

:EDIT:

Some additional clarification :)

Nope I play the game when it peaks my interest then drop it for weeks and months at a time.

Nothing has happened or likely will happen to break that pattern for me.

Probably. I’m saying that because I usually start getting bored with games around this time in the lifespan unless they are exceptionally good. We’ll see.

Not a total break.
But it will disappoint if exploration don't get MUCH better.
