Ok FDev, we need to talk.

I'll give you a clue - all computer games are a waste of time. By definition.

Anyway. Bye. :)

If that is your opinion, fine.
I think that you're never wasting time when having fun, whether playing a game or doing something else.
Maybe it's not always responsible, but it's definitely no waste.

I took a five month break, returned to the game for the new planets and actually having fun again (hey, it's flying a space ship in VR that's not just a corridor shooter), just engineer updated some of my faves but even before 3 dropped, most of my stuff was only level 3, (FSDs, power and thrusters I put more effort into).
Have to agree tho, the RNG / mission / punishment issues have been a cluster ... of epic proportions, probably will play for another month or so then wait for the .4 update (not sure it'll arrive this year tho).
They really have shown utter contempt for gamer's leisure time IMHO.

If you were happy with your mods before, why wouldn't you be happy now? What the hell kind of logic is that? Seriously, this one isn't making sense to me. I'm not trying to attack you. It'll take a total of maybe 5-10 rolls to max a legacy grade 5 mod if you feel compelled to do it. Add an extra margin of 2 or 3 for those edge cases, but still. That leaves less time chasing a good enough roll and more time playing. Note: Good enough =/= maxed.

You're acknowledging that you're not forced to re roll, but then complaining that that isn't good enough either. What would be good enough then? Please, any suggestions? I thought the current system was one of the best compromises.
This was the point I was going to make, especially when the aim is for exploration. Why is the OP's ship suddenly not good enough any more? That said, I do sympathise to an extent. Engineers is little more than senseless power creep and collecting materials is very grindy and too heavily dependent on RNG. However, I still think the new system is an improvement on the old one - a lesser of two evils.

Both accounts are pre-child. I haven't touched the second since my boy was born. The second was just to allow me to get a break from space madness and participate in bubble life while my main was off gallivanting across the galaxy.

So that second account sounds like the one you'll be wanting to keep active while you leave the first one dormant. And then perhaps restrict yourself to one favourite ship on that active account. Re-engineer it. Enjoy it. Sell the rest. Be brutal; you've got a child to look after now. Think of selling off those ships as clearing out rooms you no longer use. Bin everything.

You can retain balance with your busier life, but it will require play-style adjustments, while you still enjoy the game.

Personally I get a lot of joy from being the owner of only one ship. It makes my experience in the game more "personal", instead of viewing multiple owned ships as merely tools for missions.

Curious if you would have defended Elite back when you were playing 30 hours per week (literally nearly a full time job) with arguments about how the mechanics were fine, learn to play, space is big, nothing is free, blah blah blah. Now that your no-lifer lifestyle has fallen by the way side you are beginning to see the problem.

I can dedicate maybe 6 hours per week, 10 if I want to waste time, to Elite. Recently decided to do some engineer work, learned I needed to travel 5,000 ly and grind mats, etc. Stared at a loading screen plus star jump over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again for over an hour. Recognized the terrible "gameplay" loop for what it was and logged off.

Elite is a cool game every now and then but it only does one thing perfectly, and that's waste your time if you're not careful.

You could just take it easy with the new engineers, OP. I haven't fully converted my modules (i had no 'god rolls' from the old system) and only maxed my fsd, thrusters, and a few other modules for my cutter. Being at 85 to 90% of max is no big deal. I often switch out engr'd modules between my ships , particularly weapons, utility modules , etc. in my fleet anyways if I ever do switch ships. I can still do most all missions including the new assassination ones with some finagling. I would just collect the materials through normal gameplay. A lot of the new missions also reward some rare materials. The remote working of the pinned blueprints also helps when you can gradually improve your particular module as you come across the needed materials. The new engineering is actually more fun, with a favorable new revamp of effects and potential for more new items through the tech broker.

The new engineering system is much better them the previous one, previously depended on luck, and for the grinders it could be a never ending work. Cant see the point !!!!!????

No it's not. You have to grind for a lot more materials now. Every single module starts at G1. And it's not like PI's are easier to find now. Still a PIA to find. Go buy an FDL and put 6 SB's on it for PvP and then try and tell me Engineering is better. Anyone who says that Engineering is better must have a fleet of 1 ship.

Yes, the ceiling has raised a bit for most mods. That can be a nuisance for humans as we always feel compelled to have the best things. I won't lie, I understand.

Anyone saying the new system is more grindy and punishing just...it makes me wonder what the best system would be in their mind. I want to know. Hey, it could end up being better. Or not. But still. The new system can't really be considered worse in the min/max grind department.

Edited for clarity. Min max grind is better, casual single g5 roll grind isnt, I suppose.

understandable. sadly this aspect seems very unlikely to change. maybe take a break (there are indeed other great games out there), or ... you did discover tens of thousands (really??) of systems without engineering, right? no reason you cannot continue to do so ...

to the other ducks:
i do get where you come from, guys, but mocking every ragequit post doesn't change the fact that they are becoming increasingly frequent. you might feel good and get away with direspecting these players, but you still need them for the game to be supported in the long run. way to throw stones at your own ... ships. just saying.

Agreed cmdr.

However, by now this trainload of ____ ought to have been placed on the ignore list long long ago and if not, there's no better time than the right here and now ;)

Fd need to implement a donate my ship option so every time a post like this goes up there will be free ships going.

I get the OPs points though..
i hate free to play grind mechanics

Who is this ''us''...are you using the royal 'we'? I happen to like the new Engineeering system because at least now you can be fairly certain that your next upgrade will be better then the last and are no longer at the mercy of RnG gods of the internet. Before 3.0 I had better results at lvl.3 then lvl.4 when upgrading my FSD on my DBX...at least now I know what I am getting when I decided to upgrade something on my ships..

Are there problems with 3.0?[mad]...yes....is Engineering one of those problems? No [big grin]

I...well...what? Just nab a couple of extra grade 5 mats and trade down. Problem solved.

People claiming it's better might also have a mind for efficiency. I don't know what kind of mind I have, but I own a Cutter, a Vette, Chieftain, Imp eagle, and a courier. Oh and a viper MK 3. That's more than one, right? I think engineering is better. I hope your engineering pain doesn't persist, though. Best of luck. o7

All the people clogging up the thread not contributing and just saying things like “ok, bye”, you need to realise you’re not being the better man by commenting, even worse, you sound really childish and school playground-y.

Totally agree with OP, this is a game, reward the people who play it a lot or have played it a lot by allowing them to do what they want to do.

Stop pandering to people whining about how other people play the game. It’s utterly pathetic that some beast who plays the game all day in his basement should influence my right to well paid wing source missions after a 12 hour shift at work.

Although I still have lots of fun playing ED I do get it that others become frustrated by the fact that almost every accomplishment in this game is reached by committing yourself to some sort of grind.
For money, to be able to buy ships.
For materials, to be able to engineer.
For rank, to be able to buy certain ships or equipment.
And so on....

It would be impossible for ED to revert the already existing mechanisms imho.
What I don't get is that they keep adding these grinds for every new feature they introduce.
New content, like the Guardian Structures, is always a good thing, putting that behind a new grind wall is not, people get worn out, fatigued, that way.
I know that I'm not gonna bother with new content if there's a new grind attached to it and that if this continues to be FD's standard I will lose the fun I have eventually, thus stop playing.

I've thought long and hard about this FDev and it is a sad day, but I think the time has come to move on. Coming from a life long ( I am 41) gamer, this is an amazing time in the gaming industry. There are so many amazing games out there right now and so many amazing options for me to spend what little time I do have to relax and frankly FDev, you have failed me here.

Fixed that for you.
