Thargoid Attacks: Where, When and What you can do about it

I found some trick in HIP 22460 that may be useful (mostly in coop though, read the full descriptions for more use cases) :

Edit: you can fast forward the video, the length was just to demonstrate that I could stay around 15 minutes in normal space without any thargoid coming.

Well, we should open a support ticket so FD can fix this buggy behavior then =)

I was looking at NHSS, assuming that they had maybe been removed around HIP 22460 after recent events, but actually it looks more like the Merope Shell (the volume around Merope where NHSS will spawn) has been reduced to around 66Ly. This is a large reduction in extent (normally the shell is around 155Ly up to 175Ly - it varies occasionally).

Of no practical use, just thought it may be of interest for Thargoid nerds 🧑‍🔬

(And ofc may not be true, though I did sample quite a few systems :) )

I sampled a few systems too the other day and it does indeed seem to have shrunk to around 50-ish lightyears. Does anyone know if the other Thargoid regions have changed in size?

WH is about the same or slightly larger at around 80ly. Last report I have is 70Ly so it might have extended. I don't have a centre or size recorded for the Coalsack so am heading over there to get a baseline, but at the moment it looks like the Pleiades is the one affected.

Edit: Adding a list of the systems I checked and found NHSS outside the proposed 50 Ly range and the 66Ly I think is happening for reference

Looks like Coalsack shell is centred on Musca Dark Region PJ-P b6-1 and around 59ly radius at the moment, will add to OP for future reference.

🤷‍♀️ I don't know that anyone has ever measured it before
I'd run a couple of approx spreadsheets putting it at ~60 from PJ-P b6-1 from early data but that was only like 40 datapoints back in *December 2020 - 17 for sheet one that i checked myself, 25 from the alerts server.

Far as the plugin/sheet, believe for center LCU mentioned it had averaged out as Musca Dark Region PJ-P b6-8 and around 60-70Ly as of November 2nd 2021, not sure what it's reading as now.

edit - Sorry - forgot i'd copied the sheet, had to dig further for the original

Looks like there is a 'zone of anger' around HIP 22460 - maybe a 50 Ly sphere where hyperdictions will be aggressive and NHSS interceptors will also aggro.

Because the Merope shell is only around 66Ly (looks like it is just over) the number of systems where you can find aggressive NHSS is small (HIP 22460 is 99 Ly from Merope)

Not seen any further out than 50 Ly, but if they exist they will probably be in this set of systems

This thread may be of interest to you. It concerns one of the barnacles in merope now giving off smoke from the top instead of sparkles.

I will have to check this out tonight once I get home from work.

And checked it out, dead barnacle as expected, but decided to record the audio and per Ricardo's Gaming, sped up the playback. The audio I've posted plays just a minute of the sound at normal speed then posts the entire 3 minutes at 3 x normal. There is a voice in there. Still not sure what it's saying - I'm new to Audacity so I may need some expert to dig into that sound:

Looks like what's actually happened in the Coalsack is that the centre of the NHSS shell has moved 20 ly from Musca Dark Region CQ-Y d86 to Musca Dark Region PJ-P b6-1, and the radius has changed from 50[1] to 60LY.

This is rare - first time I've seen an NHSS centre move significantly. Often the NHSS shells change radius (especially around the Pleiades), but I've only seen the centre refined to neighbouring systems[2] as we get more data. Never seen such a big jump in locations so I'm actually dubious that it is 'real' [3].

There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason for this - it would have been nice if they were heading to the bubble, but it doesn't look like that to me 🤷‍♀️

(I checked the other shells and they seemed unchanged this week.)

[1] Actually there was one system just over 50 - but less than 50.1ly, so I spent time investigating the size last week as mostly the shell radii are multiples of 5LY
[2] e.g. the Pleiades shell right now is centred better on Maia (65Ly) than on Merope (67Ly), despite the significance of Merope 5c to the Thargoids
[3] I have visited 20+ systems at ~58 Ly from the new centre - all had NHSS. And I did the same at ~62LY. No NHSS. A similar thing was done last week with the old centre & limits. It's usually obvious when you have the wrong centre as you will only see NHSS in some of the systems.

edit: And Musca Dark Region PJ-P b6-1 was measured as the centre before now, so maybe last week's checks were wrong 🤔 Damn I need a better way of tracking this :)

Bit late to the news, busy chasing Stargoids :)

Three systems attacked (42 n Persei, Chun Pindit and Tekkeitjal), with associated CGs https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet/thargoids-turn-attention-inhabited-systems and https://www.elitedangerous.com/community/goals. Reports of the new style AX CZ (no Cap Ships).

No status report in Galnet so these won't be beatable (though the outcome of the CG may be significant). CG text indicates these are ongoing incidents - the CGs last 9 days but expect it to be longer. I guess there might be status reports in the stations in those systems (haven't checked), but it seems unlikely. Galnet post also indicates that these attacks will be different to previous ones, so I might have to rewrite the OP :)

(Other news: No changes to the NHSS bubble or Zone of Aggro this week. Stargoids have associated hyperdictions that can be aggressive (when you jump out from the current system) or passive (other direction)).

There's nothing at the station in 42 N Persei, complete obliviousness and business as usual for those folks (and for everyone in the ground settlements too) while us pilot's fed suckers fight to the death with the bugs a few light seconds away from them. Couldn't even find any graffiti.

Shell sizes for the week, just to archive them. Data from eddn for this week only.
