Docking computer - bought one for the Blue Danube experience, used it once, sold it. I can have the Blue Danube playing in the background with preferred manual docking (just need to alt-tab to get it going then back into the game).

I expect docking computer behaviour will improve with AI behaviour improvements. Still don't need one though. :)

Going off topic and/or hijacking is against forum rules, even if its the OPs doing.

Also this thread is riding the line of the zero tolerance rule on sexual discrimination.

Get it under control or action will be taken.

Fairy nuff.......

I will not jest again......

I totally agree...Docking is no prob......In ED

Sheesh..................

I was just trying to make a funny comment about the AI.....

Which obviously was not appreciated..........

Had an autodock but gave it back after using it twice. The first time just to try it out, left station, turned around, switched it on, yeah was okay. After docking, loaded up the sidewinder and headed off to do a spot of trading. Once docked at my destination I discovered that all my cargo had vanished. A quick look thru the forum revealed a post about the same issue, (and references to young canines??). Got a full price refund, must have still been within the warranty period.

@MahdDogg - nice vid, darn Daleks, can never trust the little self-centred blighters.

Are they modelled on female AI ??

Gleaned from hours of viewing major supermarket carpark cctv footage ?

Just askin.......

Coz had to buy one last night........

Had an unfortunate experience with "Stella"

:D

Still....Got a Cobra......(Just)

The docking computer isn't that good and according to some is more bother than its worth. Much better to keep trying and you'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

Just to clear things up..............

I can dock fine........I've been docking all the way to a cobra
(Which I got last night).........

I just bought one last night as I had a marathon session from approx. 18:00 till 04:30 this morning,...................

And I had a few beers....Hence my docking was a bit iffy.........

So I bought a docking computer.......

First experience with one so I thought I would post a funny.....

Which obviously was not......

Thoughts on the docking computer:
1. By the time I've saved up 4500 credits to buy one, I find I can dock very easily by flying in myself.
2. Is there any reason to buy one? Well, yes, there would be, if it docked swiftly and efficiently, saving time on finding the station entrance, lining up, and carefully setting down on the correct pad. That would allow faster turnaround times at the station.
3. Does it do that? No. You still have to fly all around the station hunting for the entrance (yes, I know you can spot loads of other ships on the scanner queueing, and get a clue where the dock entrance is if you don't know already, but it feels like it takes ages to get fly round the Coriolis station - and it's easy to misjudge the face you wanted).
4. It sometimes fails to put the landing gear down until the last split second, usually when it's making a very high rate of descent on vertical thrust, frightening the uninsured pilot who has lots of expensive cargo on board :)
5. It makes horrible air-sickness inducing spinning-violently-round-the station-entrance approaches which are as good a reason as any to head straight to the outfitters and return it for a refund.
6. I would like to see a docking computer which is worth buying because it gives fast turn-around between missions and has the following features:
* Engages as soon as the pilot has successfully requested docking (i.e. about 7 km out).
* Flies straight to the docking port at maximum speed with an absolute minimum of manouevering - just like a very good human pilot who has brilliant spatial awareness and knows exactly where the docking port is and the shortest route to it.
* Once through the port, points the ship's nose at the allocated landing pad without any more giddy rolling around, and lands like a human, flying a straight in approach, levelling off and cutting the throttle just above the bad, and making a GENTLE vertical descent to settle on the pad.
*Oh, yes, and puts the landing gear down as soon as it's pointing at the pad, and not waiting until the station is screaming "WARNING! LANDING GEAR NOT DEPLOYED!!!" :)
* I'd also like an undocking facility, maybe as an upgrade to the basic docking computer? For those occasions when playing very late, decide on one more run, and then whack the ship into the edge of the dock exit because you're too tired to concentrate. Not that I would of course, ha ha.
Any thoughts?

Docking Computer issue

I tried docking at the Aulin facility in an Eagle using the docking computer. When it engaged Auto Dock, it just had me spinning around in front of the dock while playing its music. I did find the combination of my ship spinning to the ballet style music amusing, but also frustrating as my controls were disabled. I had to go into the systems panel and disable the docking computer so I could dock manually.

The docking computer certainly isn't the world's greatest is it? I've learnt not to leave the controls to make a cup of tea while docking, partly because the docking permissions can time out before the computer has figured out where the slot is but also because the ship might start spinning at any moment and then I end up with scalding hot tea all over my cockpit.

I find it does this from time to time, mainly when I haven't lined my ship up very well. To come out of auto dock just throttle up and realign your ship. This is not a very good work around as the auto dock should work in the first place but give it a little slack with it still being beta. It is annoying though. Maybe it should do that sometimes anyway but there could be better docking computers available for a higher price that are much better at plotting an entry route. Just a thought

Well, I did spend the first few minutes laughing my ass off at the game playing classical dance music while my ship was spinning uncontrollably in front of the dock. Part of me wanted to say it was NYI (Not Yet Implemented), but I figured I'd post about it just to make sure. Throttle wasn't responding nor was pitch/roll/yaw. So I went into the system panel to see if turning off the module would work and I regained control.

Did a little better solo in I Bootis, until it decided to turn inverted and hang perpendicular to the entrance just inside for 10 seconds. Then it decided to use thrusters to maneuver to the dock, flipped back over, and slammed down on the pad about a quarter off-center.

Seeing as how the AI runs on the NPC ships, I'm not sure I should be trusting this. Half the NPC ships I see kamikaze straight into the side of the station near the entrance.

Death by Chango dock

Im taking a break from this game after being set back to starting ship twice by Chango dock. What happens every time when I try to dock is this:

I have a docking computer. I line up with the entrance and request permission. Permission is granted and the music starts and the docking computer takes charge. 5 seconds later Chango dock opens fire and I die after 2 seconds. I dont seem to bump into anyone and I can see no obvious crimes being commited.

What is this? If this "feature" makes it to the game you will lose alot of customers.

Is docking manually really so hard?

Nearly half the ships in the game fit through sideways without grazing the entrance...

Its not hard. Its just the way I used to play FE2. I just think we shouldnt lose our ship and cargo on a regular basis when using automatic systems. A small chance of failure is ok, but not 2/2.

Docking Crash

Yeah, went to dock at Aulin, all was going well until just before my bay. Docking computer suddenly decided to put on full thrust to try and exit, span out of control and smashed into the entrance :S
