The docking computer is a complete waste of credits and time.

It take 10 times longer to dock than manually, but still crashes most of the time.

Neil Armstrong's computer on Apollo 11 had more processing power.

Please fix it Frontier. :(

Agree. But I often waste time in searching the landing pad and I find that the docking computer find it more quickly, but when I try to combine both ways to pilot, enter manually then let the DC do its job, the DC never take over and it's stuck with the message "approach docking bay"... If Frontier can fix this little bug in the same time...

The docking computer may be slow but when it flew in backwards :eek:just to demonstrate how superior it is to the human pilot I had to say I was impressed.

I could not have flown it in backwards, without requiring a minor insurance payout and paint.

Didn't need one in the original, don't need one now ;)

However, I wish the Blue Danube would come on when going to the station without a docking computer after you select request to dock.

Bought one just to experience the music as a tribute to the original game.

I thought I had to turn it on, but nope!! .. Ripped control out of my hands, kind of freaked me out.

Sold it soon as I docked at my next destination.

Have to admit, mirrors/cameras would seriously make my docking experience a great deal more enjoyable. And reversing...

You can turn it off in the right function panel.

Ahh... of course.. Duh.. *Facepalms myself

Seriously though, how many people have crashed during AutoDocking. :S

I read a few threads saying it totaled their ships... which put me right of using one.

I was testing it in an Anaconda all last weekend, starting it at all sorts of odd angles and approaches. Apart from being a bit "special" with it's angle of approach to the landing pad and random loop the loops outside the entrance, it never crashed the ship.

As a intrepid beta player I am going to get a docking computer and let it do whatever it does. I fear for my unscratched type 6 but this has to be done.
Wish me luck.

I'm a regular user - my modus operandii is to exit SC, point at the right end of the space station, FA off, hit boost, throttle to 0.... comms panel, request docking - usually timed about right to be close enough... and that's it. The only problems I get are when I forget to turn FA back on when I launch. I read news, make tea etc when the computer is doing its thing. I've twice had it fail to dock, but never had it crash

I love docking anything from a Sidey through Lakon and Anaconda.

Not sure why newcomers don't keep practising docking (and taking off) while they have nothing to lose (ie just keep getting free Sidey).

The only reason I can think of for risking using one might be if you needed to go afk (and even then I'd rather save/quit).

Give control of .5mil worth of ship insurance and 1.5mil of cargo over to AI to land, with humans flying in and out (I've seen the way some of you fly ;)) No chance

The docking comp activation is automatic isn't it? How do you manually dock with it installed, power it down?

Yep I love the slightly time consuming wayward style.....

Whilst docking one time tonight...I cleaned out the cat tray....Emptied the bin and fed the cats....

All with the blue Danube reverberating in the background.....

Also good if one needs a fridge run for a beer.........

:D

Can't buy a docking computer

So pretty standard, started with a sidewinder, ground thru trading, bought a docking computer....

After a while I upgraded to a Hauler, ground some more, went to buy another docking computer and.... no docking computers.... like anywhere.... on any of the stations I can fly to. I know I am using the correct slot, it just is not available as an option anymore

Where did the docking computers go?

They do tend to come and go...

I think I got mine at either Eranin or Aulin.... Remember that the outfitting menus can be reset by exiting the game and rejoining (yes it's a faff but it does work... to a point).

Honestly ? Save your 4000 quid if you're at that stage, you can do more/better with the money. You'll use it once & it's a great novelty, but it can do some ridiculous things, and most people tend to get rid of them fairly quickly.

If you must though:-

Asellus Primus, Aulin & Opala have them most of the time (all the time ??), 50% chance of finding one in Pi Fang on any given visit.

I got mine in iBootis and they are there occasionally - logout / login sometimes help bring them up. Goes in the very bottom slot (sometimes you need to scroll down) I think called support tech... you only have one slot it can fit into.

I only bought mine to see if the Blue Danube DID play... It did... I learnt that... I've not used it since! :D

I bought my first one at Ibootis but it appears there are none there anymore.

Restarting the game did not help. Checked Eranin (there was one there before) and Aulin (was one there too) and they are both gone.

As for a waste of money, I can dock myself no problem, it just comes in handy when I am closing on the station and the wife and four kids need something, just hit the auto button and when I come back its parked.

With no pause, it's the closest thing I have to a pause to help with children. One of the big reasons I don't play MMO's, I can't commit to that sort of time without being able to walk away and help with kids/dinner/chores/bedtimes.
