<snip/>...the best part of the game is docking and undocking.

If I were someone who never played the game, this would sound pretty off-putting. But as someone who has spend more time with ED than he should have, I can absolutely agree! After a year of playing nearly daily, I am still in awe every time I approach the entrance of the huge stations! That detail compared with that scale, and than the great light effects of nearby stars! Still breathtaking

I tried it when it was first released and I can honestly say using it in a rift, nothing ever scared me as much in a computer game - that thing was a death trap.

Tried it again after speeding rules had been implemented and kept using it.
The thing is I don't have any issues docking an Anaconda at 180 m/s after having done it a couple of hundred or even thousand times, but at those speeds I can't guarantee I wont hit a cocky sidewinder actively trying to cross my path because it doesn't exactly stop on a dime, reulting in me potentially being blown to bits. So it would be recommendable to pass the Slot at <100, which is so agonisingly slow, I can't be bothered to do it myself anymore.

After testing it a couple of times, I now fully entrust it with my Anaconda and even go afk to get a drink or whatever whilst it docks. Even works for smuggling runs - boost in, full stop and it docks nice and smooth.

Would be great to see undocking functionality added to it eventually - wasn't necessary in the original Elite but in ED, it would be nice to have.

In a older thread I used the word "useless" for it.

Now it's time to beg Sarah's pardon, because I became totally addicted to that little electronic beauty that is the Standard Docking computer :)

I use it even when smuggling if I'm in an outpost and not in a coriolis station, but just because I want to control if I risk to be scanned.
It's amazing how good it is the computer at docking, way, way better than me.

lazy?

lol,i just approach the dock in my annie and tell astra to request docking...then tell it to deploy landing gear...followed by stop engines.

dont even touch my hotas lol.

i love the docking computer....gives me a chance to have a quick puff and a swill of coffee he he

I agree, the DC is awesome now!
While I never used it on my smaller ships (and never will), I installed one on my new T9 and enjoy the compfort quite a bit... to an extend that I miss it sometimes when flying said small space-crafts.

However, using it is not completely safe!

I don't know what happened exactly, as I didn't watch my monitor, absolutely confident in the DC's capabilities.
All of a sudden, I heard laser fire, my tiny shields went down ring by ring, collapsed and I took hull damage!
A ship (I don't know which one; a pirate? station security?) did shoot on me!

I mannaged to stop the docking process, boosted away and fled into SC. After re-entering the station instance, everything was normal again.

Did anybody experience this, too?
Are there pirates near stations now? I haden't ladden anything illegal and was not wanted in this system.
What could have happened?

I like it - ish. I put it on my diamondback explorer for a quick play. trying to dock into Sol/Titan City, the obvious way was through the ring of the Orbis. TheDc decided it was neater to crash into the ring as it tried to avoid this course. Shields wiped out and 91% hull remained. Not a biggie SJA, just 220 <strike>beers</strike> credits should cover it :)

The next DC update will fix that, along with several other issues. One day I'll get it perfect... or die trying! So many special cases to deal with! Latest one is if a player parks their ship next to the entrance cage and activates DC... my version can navigate itself out of the way, wait for clearance and then fly through the entrance. :) But working on DC distracts me from formulating ways for my minions to kill players... Oh well, such is life. ;)

Well you can always outsource that bit. When commander engages the Docking Computer, control of his ship is transferred to one of 137 kids working in a sweatshop in Indonesia at 30 cents an hour, and he can pilot your Anaconda in on boost...

I think that is the idea!

Making the DC perfect is *so* much more important than making the AI that kills me even better. I've just wasted 1million Cr in repairs getting good enough to beat your cunning Python/Vulture combo. I only got 256k for it. It must be the heat. :)

Oh... and another thing. How come your fancy DC needs a whole class 1 bay? Can't you make it a 0.69Cr App and I'll put it on my 120 gramme GalPhone? :D
