The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

The draft above has been updated to most current version.
This one is also very beautiful. :)

I liked the borders on the previous one (allows me to put everything in the right "box"). Will the web version get an extra layer so that these borders (for people with my kind of OCD) can be enabled if desired?

The borders won't be visible on the main map once its incorporated into EDSM (we were just using them as a rough guide), firstly because if they're visible and we need to amend or tweak them it means the whole map has to be redone and reincorporated into EDSM all over again, and secondly we feel its much better if there is some ambiguity as to where regions merge with each other. A bit of mystery and ambiguity for the community maps was something I always set out to have when this project was first began. The Formidine Rift being an example as to why defined borders are a bad idea - part of the story that incorporates the Rift is based on not knowing exactly where it is in game.

Due to the amount of effort thats gone into the border map and the underlying polygon map that will allow players to click anywhere within a region, and bring up that regions descriptive/historical text, this will be the definitive community-made regional map. Unless FD add some official region names to the game map, we won't be making anymore regional additions.

At one early point we considered adding region borders to the map, and I also seem to recall a few people in this thread asking about it when we removed those again. It is something we have talked about in the mapping team, but in the end we decided to not include the borders.

Because there is also something really fine, and true to the spirit of exploration, about the regions being somewhat ambiguous.

When flying through the galaxy, there is no clear and distinctive line to define where eg. the Near 3kpc Arm transitions into the Perseus Stem. Just like there is no clear and obvious marker to define the edges of the Sagittarius-Gap.

We needed to draw an attempt at those lines in order to make an underlying clickable (but invisible map) in EDSM that allows users to see the descriptions of the regions. But we won't put those lines visible onto the map as that would give the impression that the regions are more well defined than they actually are.

Thanks for the motivation, Erimus and Corbin Moran. I find that it actually makes that I can even appreciate the absence of the borders now :). And please know that all the hard work you people put into EDSM is very much appreciated!

Fellow explorers,

apart from integrating the new maps into EDSM we will also start reviewing and adding your latest submissions to the Mapping Project. This may take some time but we'll probably start on thursday so if you have new submissions in the making, feel free to post them here. :cool:

Please do not forget to always add an ingame reference star system and also, if possible, to add a screenshot or two in order to maybe later add some flavour.

We have this crazy ambition of one day adding images to all current entries in the EDSM map!!!

I have done it for the Sagittarius-Carina Mission waypoints and I really think it ads some flavor - but doing it for all entries is going to be a major work (we are approaching 600+ entries). But the end result could look like these entries:

I have three nebulae propositions, all from the XOTHUIA sector.

First up: Angelfish Nebula

POI Type: Nebula
System Reference: XOTHUIA AA-A H9

2d6v0us.jpg

Description: A very small (5x3x5ly) nebula, red, black and orange in colour. Very few unusual stars are present; the attractiveness comes from the fact this nebula has the same shape and construction as much larger diffuse nebulae, but on a much smaller - some would say cuter - scale.
Viewed from "below" it resembles an Angelfish, specifically a Koi Angelfish, attempting to eat the

Rorschach Nebula

POI Type: Nebula
System Reference: XOTHUIA AA-A H34

2qty4is.jpg

Description: A fairly small (40x30x42ly) nebula; very colourful, with elements of blood-red, bottle green and translucent orange intermingling with the darker black. This nebula is surrounded by a veritable field of B class stars.
As an adolescent I wondered why an artist named Rorschach had painted so many pictures of my mother, but I eventually learned he was a psychoanalyst who pioneered the famous and controversial "inkblot" tests. I wonder what he would have made of my naming of the

Rhubarb Nebula

POI Type: Nebula
System Reference: XOTHUIA AA-A H95

s124jn.jpg

vd0kmr.jpg

Description: A medium-sized (140x140x150ly) nebula, the vivid greeny-yellow and deep reds of this diffuse nebula resemble both uncooked and stewed rhubarb, which your intrepid explorer was forced to eat as a child. By evil, evil people. Nevertheless, this nebula is well worth a visit, given there are many systems around and inside it with landable bodies, providing a startling backdrop to a picnic or just a well-earned rest from travelling.

@Zil Zalo those are some good views of that group of nebulae on the far side of the core. I passed through the smallest, XOTHUIA AA-A H9, on my way back from DWE ( https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...alactic-Mapping-Project-Expedition-Hub/page44 ) but I think your name works better, especially with the screenshot you have of it.
.
There are a couple of stations named after Rorschach in the bubble, including a certain Rorschach Survey, one of my favourite names. I'm not sure if it was named by a backer or an amusing result of the procedural name generation ...

I'm so sorry - I did a search of the list of POI but didn't see it there!

@Erimus if these are accepted, would it be possible to credit Edelgard with the first discovery but name it the Angelfish Nebula? That way I believe honour will be satisfied.

(By the way Edelgard, I went for "Rorschach" as a nebula name cos I was trying to work out what it reminded me of and remembered doing an inkblot test myself many, many years ago, and thought it amusing.)

Hello!

Name :
Arissa's Nubile Orbs
Game map search ref. :

I would like to submit a beacon. A system with 2 wolf-rayet class stars (WOO 1/WCO 1) that sits about 1200lys above the Heisenberg Bridge in the Rift that you can spectacularly see in the sky box from the bridge. :D

I'm a little undecided as to a name for it yet. I would love to just name it Ziggy's Beacon however that sounds terrible. :cool: So if anyone can come up with a good name I'm all ears.

Unfortunately she seems unable to reach anytime soon. Unless we got some ability to jump 500lys in one jump.

/edit Actually I kinda like the idea of "Lumina Caelum" roughly translated as Lights of Heaven (unless there is someone here that translates latin better than google?)

I like this. Humanising the Galaxy. :) I think it would be useful for my FGE friends to help out too: they've seen lots of interesting things.

I haven't been to many places, but one place I've mentioned once or twice before that's close to my heart is Nyuena Ro-Z d184, in what I have called the Nyuena Open Cluster Sector, close to the edge of the northern bulge of the Galaxy some 1800LY directly above Sagittarius A*. In my 22LY-limited Cobra I had an amazing view of the Galaxy below. It's not the highest anybody has been, but it's the highest I have been:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpE3VM4YK7A

Additional videos of this place:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0fJOdeik2M - an Earth-like water world which I'd now like to call "The Reptile Nest"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RPUqvAnDbE - the sole ringed gas giant which has no name so far
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyCGZl2B7RA - I call this place "New Mars." :)

I don't have a name for the system, though. Unofficially I once named it "Zulu Point" but that's way too self-indulgent. :p I dunno, I think as it's up in the roof of the Galaxy I'll call the system "Cracked Canopy." :D

Thinking further, I think Cracked Canopy is a silly name. A good name for a future ground station maybe, but not a system.

If it's OK please, I'd like to rename the system Nyuena Prime. It's a classier name.

I have added all the contributors from page 54 and forwards (the list looked updated until then).

Whatever, you chose it and in this case let Hypuae Euq SY-S d3-0 be the southern meridian, it's more far out than Hypuae Euq RY-S d3-0 and more interesting, because it has planets in contrast to the other one.

Greetings Stulli and EfilOne (and anyone else with an opinon on meridian systems)

I am somewhat in doubt which systems should be registered as the Meridian, but here are some thoughts:

1) I think we should use Sol as the reference point to determine meridian systems (and not Sag A*), since Sol is the origo for the galactic grid and galactic coordinates. Current eastern and western meridian is placed based on the grid, and not on Sag A*. A meridian is a human imaginary construct, just like the galactic coordinates, so it makes sense to me to have those based on Sol as the common reference point.

(Other questions, such as measuring the size of the galaxy might well take Sag A* into account though...)

2) A meridian system should be the one closest to the zero-line of Sol among thoses systems "most distant from Sol". I admit that it is a somewhat ambigous definition.

If we go with this definition and look at the candidates for southern meridian.
  • Borchgrevink Point (current southern meridian): Coordinates: 25.03125 / -16.875 / -15461.9375 => dist to zero-line = 30.19 LY
  • Hypuae Euq ZK-P d5-0: Coordinates: 24.84375 / -16.96875 / -15940.15625 => dist to zero-line = 30.09 LY
  • Livingstone Point: Coordinates: 101.5625 / -22.46875 / -16097.09375 => dist to zero-line = 104.02 LY

It looks to me like Hypuae Euq ZK-P d5-0 should be made the southern meridian on the merit of being closest to the zero-line of Sol, and also 500 LY further out than the current southern meridian system.

But Livingstone Point should definitely be registered as noteworthy system in its own right.

---

Another "competing pair" that we would then have to look at would be

  • Deuteros (current western meridian): Coordinates: -30003.25 / -8.375 / -0.65625 => dist to zero-line = 8.40 LY
  • Westpoint Ormand: Coordinates: -30697.34375 / 0.15625 / -2.09375 => dist to zero-line = 2.10 LY

Westpoint Ormand should possibly be made the new western meridian as it is almost 700 LY further out and deviates less from the zero-line.

Please let me hear your thoughts!

@EfilOne and Andrew - Regarding Star's End Depot and Distant View Depot

Could you list on which celestial bodies in the system the Jumponium is to be found?
(additional data on jump point distance and gravity is useful as well, but most important is to know where to look for the mats :) )
