The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

It would be nice if there was a way to record all the data in a website.

Might it not be an idea to start a Wikia page for example?

There is also this but not sure how easy it would be to make it for the massive Elite map and how easy it is for users to add data.

here is a map someone made for beta with the software
http://www.edgalaxymap.com/
Think it would be massive amount of work to manually add everything

I like that beta map (2nd link). That would be a brilliant project to work on but something way out of my depth, and probably far too time consuming to update (probably).

Maybe something for the Galactic Mapping Project v10.0 in a few years time? ;)

For now though, I'll be posting v3.0 of this project in a few hours. All the maps have had a make over, new data, and extras etc etc...

I've finished a complete overhaul of the mapping project.

Hope you like the new look and extra data provided :)

The project has now been expanded to 22 maps as I've increased the scale slightly to allow more room (we may need it now that planetary exploration will provide an influx of new points of interest to add!).

The galaxy is split up into 4 Quadrants and 22 regions:

Quadrants:

  • 2nd & 3rd Quadrant
  • 1st Quadrant
  • 4th Quadrant

Regions:

  • The Orion Spur Local Region
  • The Norma Expanse
  • Upper 2nd Quadrant
  • Upper 3rd Quadrant
  • The Formidine Rift
  • Lower 3rd Quadrant
  • The Outer Arm Vacuus
  • The Galactic Core Regions
  • Galactic Aphelion Regions
  • The Abyssal Plain
  • Upper 1st Quadrant
  • Intermediate 1st Quadrant
  • The New Outer Arm
  • Lower 1st Quadrant
  • Silentium
  • Upper 4th Quadrant
  • Viatori Patuit
  • Intermediate 4th Quadrant
  • The Carina - Sagittarius Arm
  • Lower 4th Quadrant
  • The 4th Quadrant Tenebris

One or two older entries have had their details merged with another close proximity POI, due to not being able to fit two separate POI's at the same location.

I know right, it looks very cool but i doubt the software can handle the galaxy we have now.
I personally think a wikia might not be a bad idea to collect data easier.
You can arrange the pages in quadrants and such like you have now but players can add new entries and images and such or more information about the star clusters ect.
Not perfect but it is easier to go through the data that way maybe and easier to manage and control.

Galactic Mapping Project v3.0, cant wait ^^

EARLY EXPLORATION IN ELITE DANGEROUS - The Age of Pioneers (March 3300 - August 3301)

Originally created in early August 2015, the following chronicles and preserves the history of the first 18 months of exploration in Elite Dangerous...

"I've put together a history of the early days of exploration in Elite Dangerous, dating back to the first beta of March 2014, and up to July/August 2015. I believe this era to be an age of pioneers, where exploration was in its infancy and players were on the whole oblivious to what was out there, what the optimal set ups were, and how to deal with any hazards the early explorers would soon be experiencing.

I was lucky enough to be there from the very beginning so have witnessed it all, and I would say that 95% of my time in Elite Dangerous since the premium beta days has been spent exclusively playing as an explorer. So although this post may briefly touch on other aspects of the game, its main focus is all about the early history of exploration in Elite Dangerous.

Most of it is from memory and from the few old posts I've managed to dig out and get info from, so its by no means a fully accurate record. The info I've put together will have quite a bit of my own adventures mentioned as obviously those are the ones I remember the most. There will be details of other players' adventures that I've probably got wrong to some extent or major events and players I've not even listed or mentioned at all (purely because I've forgotten - sorry!). So please feel free to add or correct me on anything important I've missed and I'll edit any info as and when I get it".

During Beta Phases it was possible to escape the pill via some routes.

There was a post on these forums where I read about it, and there are a couple on reddit. I think these explorers are worth calling out given the limited access to large ships and simple navigation available.

On explorer at least took shots : http://imgur.com/a/iQbP5
I also took a trip outside and wrote about it in a short story : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=131756

One of my first ever videos was about escaping the pill and exploring beyond its boundaries... I'd forgot all about it!

I've added a new paragraph to that bit of history timeline..

  • The Cobra Mk III Era

In the final quarter of 3300 AD the boundary of explorable space had spread much further afield, and had became known as the 'Beta-3 Pill'.

At the far edges of this new boundary, a few daring explorers managed to find several routes outside the 'pill'. CMDR Azriphail being one of the first to document such endeavors, and in March 3301 he wrote an account of his adventures surrounding his trip outside the limits. Other explorers did likewise and one of the last surviving visual recordings of that era shows where explorers had managed to reach, despite the boundaries imposed."

I like the idea of the second map, it's quite brilliant actually. Perhaps we could petition FD to create a department specifically for maintaining and updating said map.

I present to you ZOE (who was daughter of King Midas)
SYROIFAE CZ-S c3-1 6

Ammonia world with 0.4936 Earth masses
Radius 6,265 KM
Surface temperature 188K
Surface pressure of 74.27 atmospheres
Atmosphere consisting of 96.4% Nitrogen and 3.6% Argon

Zoe orbits her Type-K parent star at a distance of 509LS (slightly over 1AU) every 349.9 days. She has a rotational period of 29 standard hours.
Scans indicate single cellular level life on Zoe, with no signs of anything more advanced.
I will be making a report on her in an upcoming Postcards Addendum transmission.

PERIMETER NEBULA: HYPIO PRAO AA-A H16, 4th Quadrant, 27000Ly from Sol, 8000Ly from Sagittarius A*
Map Entry Type: Nav Beacon
This nebula layes at the very border of the Near 3KPC Arm, the border of the Core Area. It's located in a transition zone between high star density and low star density, and this transiction is visible in the skybox too.
CMDR Akira Masakari of the Worm Ship was weary of the scientifical inspection of the Eastern Lower Neutron Field, and of the "core mess" (super-high-star-density that makes Gal Map Inspection annoying for Man and Navigational Route Plotter too). Thus, he decided to use this Nebula as a Beacon to navigate outside the core mess and get closer to the ecliptical plane. The Nebula itself does not sport particular systems of interest, and neither any non-sequence star, laying 500 ly above the Eastern Lower Neutron Field.

The Norma Expanse

  • Speamoea IV

The Outer Arm Vacuus

  • The Eorld Hypa Badlands
  • The 'Southern' Meridian
    [*]The Tauri Cluster

The Far Galactic Rim

  • [N] The 'Northern' Meridian
  • ATT's World
  • Lynx Legacy
  • Ceeckia PE-E D13-0
  • Myeia Thaa JI-B D13-0

Intermediate 4th Quadrant

  • The Perimeter Nebula

The 4th Quadrant Tenebris

  • Zoe

Well, i had an evil time coming back from the core. Was slightly to the left of the core (looking from Sol), after the Near 3kpc Arm Badlands and not only after the Norma Expanse, but well into the Norma Arm.

Overall it was something like 5000 LY of travel through sectors full of protostars roughly on the zero Z axis of the galactic plane. I didn't deviate, so no idea how wide or high this region is, but it was certainly long.

When i finish my trip (5000LY to go), ill upload an image of the area and my path through it.

I've been on a similar trek through the 4th quadrant. Its getting increasingly harder to find something unique or interesting to add to the maps now as there is nothing like the content out there that we have on our doorstep; nothing like Barnard's Loop, no nebula as detailed as the Horsehead, no other Bubble nebula, and not even star clusters like the dozens we have all through the Orion Spur. :/

Looking at your sig, I suggest going to the Formidine rift!:D

Wuuuu Erimus, a lot of interesting locations you are posting!!!! I will check some out in game, now i have something too, a little bit grim...
TORMENT: Intermediate 4TH Quadrant:
This region is the gap between the Norma and the Saggitarius arms, south the Dryo Gap. Exiting from the core area, the relative low density of stars makes routes convoluted, and the crazy core systems give place to an endless serie of M class with few ice balls. Traversing this area from the core, or from anywhere else, tests the endurance of the pilots that want to go further.
POI: EEAMBAIST Torment (EEAMABAIST AA-A H0, 33834,45 Ly from Sol): This lone Wolf Reyet, undergoning the torment of consuming the last stages of its life, it's a testimony of the CMDRs struggles to traverse this area.

The waypoint beacons I added are nothing special to be honest, just bright stars in respect to their sectors. The reason I added them was to aid players in figuring out distances when looking at the maps, and to give me a reference point to work from when trying to pinpoint new entries ;)

Will add The Eeambaist Torment to the next round of updates :)

Hmmm, just found a weird world out on my travels. A dwarf giant (if such a thing exists lol), that is pock marked with light-emitting storms.

Maybe one that warrants further scientific study once we can fly through atmospheres?
