On behalf of the mapping team; a big thanks to the exploration community for embracing the GMP and helping to map out the Milky Way! :)

A little late, but here is our full 2 years traffic report to celebrate!

POI Update:

I was going over some old discoveries from way back, and some have never been listed by people that followed.

New POI:

POI Name: Cocytus Nebula
POI Type: Planetary Nebula
Galmap ref: Dryaa Flyi FH-U e3-9159

Desc: "An easily bumped into nebulae on a direct flight coreward into Sagittarius. A desolate system, dominated by a stellar mass black hole. The aqua gas of Cocytus and dense surrounds of blue B/O stars make it a temporary detour into a seemingly frozen underworld, and a temporary refrain from the the beige warmth of the mid Near 3KPC Arm. -- https://youtu.be/AxI5PttoqC8"

Hi. I'm adding star clusters as I find them in the galactic map to the elite dangerous wiki. Should I add that information here, so the galactic map can be updated, or just the link to the article?

If you want your stars in EDSM then you'll need to upload your journal files. You can do it direct on the website or via a local app like ED Discovery.

If you actually mean POIs for the Galactic Mapping Project then that thread is here.

ETA - yes I have indeed linked from this thread to this thread. For some reason when I wrote that I was sure I was on the EDSM thread. Who knows?

Was asked to explain some terminology - two regions of space I referenced - that I gave in another post, so here goes.

Okay. Not sure how to submit it, but here's the information on each.

"The Briar Patch". It's a term I've seen on occasion. It might be what's referred to as "The Solitude Void" on the maps, but I'm not sure. Basically, after passing the Abyss from 58500-61500ly, there's an area of stars roughly 61500-65000 ly from Sol, where the star density is smaller than what you'd find in the rim, but still far greater than in the Abyss.

"The Thargoid Wall" - and I did confirm it's still there, thank you, you gave me a chance to roughly map its dimensions - maybe there's another name for it. It is a set of systems, all permit-locked, in the Perseus Stem, consisting of names of Preia(number) or Bleia(number), that goes from 36000 to 38000 north of Sol, -950 to 950 east and west, and -360 below to 650 above the galactic plane. This is an obstacle for anyone seeking a direct route from the Bubble or Sagittarius A* to Beagle Point, as the pilot generally has to make a detour around this obstacle.

Have you got a reference system for the Briar Patch? Preferably one thats central to the patch.

The Solitude Void is an entire region that stretches from the Sublustris Beacon to the Abyssal Plain (its 12,000 LYs across), defiantly not a patch :)

The Preia and Bleia regions were discovered during one of the first galactic crossing events (Distant Suns Expedition of December 3300). At the moment they won't be marked on the maps, neither will other permit regions, as we're waiting for FD to officially name them when content is added there. The exception is Hyponia (a large Perseus arm permit region), which was added as a region due to it being the focal point of an early pioneering expedition back in early 3301.

I was the one asking Hanekura Shizuka to explain these names. I figured, that if they are common enough to be used occasionally by pilots doing speed-runs from Sag A* to Beagle, then they might be something for us to consider adding to the map (though not necessarily as regions, they could be POIs). If there has indeed developed a player lingo for certain areas, the Mapping Project would be the place to register that.

And while I agree that we should not add every permit locked sector, we could make an exception to "The Thargoid Wall", if it is placed directly on a specific route. Perhaps add it as an exploration hazard type POI? We could do the same with the Briar Patch.

Exploration Hazard POIs is a good way to represent them while we wait to see what FD do with them [up] We'd need the rough coordinates of two or three reference systems to work out how far the wall stretches (info that can be added to the POI description).

Side note to the below, I'm currently on route to ping about 2 dozen PNs through the eastern bar of the core. I don't know if it's going to be.. let's say considered polite to spam a whole bunch of these that have not been listed in EDSM as POIs in this thread.

It almost feels like I'm missing a 'public comment' option on EDSM.

Exploration Hazard Rework

The map currently lists a number of obsolete exploration hazards, many of whom where added while exploration was still in a very early stage.
Later developments in game mechanics, as well as experience gained, has shown these POIs to be of no real hindrance for navigation.

As a result I suggest the following reclassifications:

Removed:
Roedaae Badlands
The Cheia Pocket
Silentium Centauri Badlands
Syrai Theia Frying Pan
Torment's Gate -> Info added to The Torment region description
Ushornt's Inferno
The Aucoks Pocket -> Info added to Sagittarius Gap region description
HIP 29241
Vulpecula Badlands
The Poseidal Wall -> Info added to Formidine Rift region description

Changed to 'Star Cluster':
The Vanguard Stretch

Changed to 'Planetary Nebula'
'Eye of Horror'

Changed to 'Black Hole'
'Explorer's End'

Changed to 'Stellar Features'
Les Enfants Terribles
The Spiderweb

Changed to 'Other'
Owl's Garden
Xibalba

This leaves the map completely empty of exploration hazards. Instead I propose that we add all the known 'Permit Regions' in deep space. Having knowledge of these is of real interest to many deep space travellers, as they provide some of the few obstacles to clear navigation.

The regions I suggest we add are these below. In parenteses are the POI system I have used - we will need help getting these trilaterated from outside the locked regions.

Regor sector
bleia1
bleia2
bleia3
bleia4
bleia5
Bovomit
Dryman
Froadik
Hyponia
praei1
praei2
praei3
praei4
praei5
praei6
Sidgoir

Horsehead Dark Region
Col 70 Sector
Col 121 Sector
Col 97 Sector
M41 Sector
NGC 1647 Sector
NGC 2264 Sector
NGC 2286 Sector
NGC 3603 Sector

Some of these may combined in a single POI pin on the map, as they are close together.

----------------

Please share your thoughts on these suggested changes :)
