The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

I see small error in DSSA Explorer's Bar & Grill description.
  • Nearest Tritium Hotspot: Hypo Hype LN-Q d6-0 3 A
It should be Hypoi Hype sector :)

I would like to update the entry for the DSSA King's Pass. I have located a double overlapping tritium hotspot nearby, at WL-W B34-12 8.

Updated, thanks!

Hello,

since DSSA#116 is in service for 5 months now I'd like to apply here as a POI so people can find it on the map.

Thanks!

Name:Kratervisning
Galactic Map name:HIP 116253
Description:Located in the elysian shore, The system itself is in a hard to reach spot. Being a real challenge, requiring a tier 3 FSD injection or an FC to exit the system to the nearest pulsar. The system is notable for having 2 interesting planets (HIP 116253 A 1 and A 2). A2 is a notable galactic viewing spot, big flat craters, being pitch black on the night side, and having no stars around the system, the planet provides an unfiltered view of the milky way being able to view various nebulae towards the core. Somehow, these two planets are still very hot and illuminated 2,3kls away from their M class star and are decent mining spots for FSD injections.

Quick question - DSSA Leo's Vision was one of the first DSSA carriers in service. Forum post is made, mentioned in this thread a while back. Is there anything else I need to do to get it added as a POI? Never submitted anything before, so... not sure if I need todo anything else.

It looks like yours slipped through the net during the December update, sorry about that!. Its been added now. (y)

Link: Leo's Vision

Name: (Open to suggestions)
In game System name: BLEOU EUN BU-A D1
Body: BLEOU EUN BU-A D1 3
Specifically it's the Y class brown dwarf's rings, 2 things, their size and the large gap between the inner and out rings.
The rings were clearly visible before i even came to a stop in system even though the brown dwarf is 2.7k light seconds away. With the diameter of the outermost edge being 12,941,352 kilometers or 43.1 light seconds across, I believe this is a candidate for the widest rings on a brown dwarf, or Y class brown dwarf at least.
The other notable feature is the large gap between the inner and outer rings, visible in the picture, in the middle of that gap is a small rocky body, and that alone I think sets it apart from most ring systems in the game, as the only ring system I know of that should have something like that is Saturn

The DBX was when I first found it, the Krait was a few days ago when I went back to it
P.S. I found double overlapped tritium hotspot too, would that be a system I could also submit?

After viewing the latest submissions.... I encourage everyone who wants to submit something to first go back and see what was actually accepted. We're getting something like 5 to 6 poor submissions for every one that is worth accepting as a POI. Please do your homework first!

I know, that you usually don't accept planetary nebulaes, but I think, that it is worthy candidate.
Name:IC 4191
Galactic Map name:GCRV 7815
Description:IC 4191 is planetary nebula located in Musca constellation. It was discovered by Williamina Fleming in 1907. This nebula is about 14.4 thousand light-years from Earth. Apart from the main star in system exist 1 planet and 2 brown dwarfs, one of them is called "Gracie's Light"

Name:NGC 2899
Galactic Map name:GSC 8588-0317
Description:NGC 2899 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vela at a distance of nearly 6500 light years which lies in a moderate rich star zone. It was discovered by John Herschel in 1835. Years ago scientists believed, that in nebula exist binary star system, but further investigations after develop of FSD showed, than actually in nebula exist only single Wolf-Rayet star without other stellar objects. Neighbourhood of nebula, NGC 2899 Sector is house of few quite interesting systems. In NGC 2899 Sector CQ-Y D3, called Oasis Megale there are 3 water worlds, 1 earth-like world with terraformable rocky moon and 7 other candidates to terraforming. NGC 2899 Sector KH-V C2-2 is great opportunity for all Fleet Carriers owners, which want to restock their fuel due to existing double tritium hotspot. Finally, in NGC 2899 Sector MS-S B4-0 explorers can find gas giant with ring system and moon, which is few hundreds kilometers from ring edge.

That system is not named as a POI in EDSM. If you'd like to submit it as a POI, I suggest creating a separate entry for it.

Also, I'll play the role of @Heavy Johnson and point out that planetary nebulae are not up for consideration unless they are extremely exceptional. I honestly don't know how much the WR contributes, but please bear it in mind.

I'll also second Heavy's admonishment to do a little homework before submitting anything as a POI. Take a look through the thread or poke around the EDSM POI's in the category you want to submit. The best way to get a feel for the rare and exceptional, though, is to spend more time exploring. Get a couple of thousand FSS scans under your belt and you'll have a much better idea of what to submit.

I also just recalled that same CMDR's super-helpful thread on rarities that can just act as a simple guide.

Catalogued (named) and full-sized nebula. No more procedural PN will be accepted without a really really good reason.
;)

I know, that planetary nebulaes usually aren't accepted, I did it only because both are catalogued nebulaes. I'm just not sure, what about real nebulas :)

Yeah, our general exception is for full-sized nebula and nebula with catalogue names, due to their real-world historical value. My general rule there is that you need to be able to type in the name of the nebula and get sent to the system. ie if you type in "NGC 2899" you should get sent to the NGC 2899 nebula system. It's kind of arbitrary, but all of this is kind of arbitrary, we have to put lines in somewhere to not have a map overloaded with info. Marx's catalogue is "everything", GMP is "curated". :)

IC 4191 fits mainly because of the uniquely named body, and it would be nice if the entry was able to include more detail. I'm not sure about 2899 yet. Additional information about why it is historically interesting would be nice.

The GMP and Odyssey

The Galactic Mapping Project thread will be locked throughout the Odyssey testing phase, and will reopen once the update is released on the live server.

During this period the GMP team will finish off reviewing the final batch of Horizons-era submissions posted prior to the threads temporary closure. We'll also use this time to archive some of the older entries that no longer hold the significance they may once have.

None of those older entries will be deleted as one of the prime goals of the GMP from the outset 6 years ago, was to record and preserve the evolving history of exploration and discovery within the Elite universe, hence all archived entries will remain available for reference by GMP/EDSM users, indefinitely, via the 'Archived POI' filter on the map.

Early Odyssey Submissions

Odyssey is bringing the potential of a whole new level of interesting vistas and locations to discover and submit to the project, and as Elite transitions out of the Horizons-era, the GMP will be raising the bar with what will be considered for inclusion on the community maps moving forward..

When accepting submissions, the GMP team have often (but not always) used the following statements as rough guides in the decision-making process;

"Would explorers be willing to travel thousands of light years to visit this POI?"
"Would a 34th century equivalent of todays International Astronomical Union accept the name being submitted for this POI?"

With Odyssey, we will strive to adhere to those guidelines much more closely moving forward, so please bear this in mind when submitting new POIs to the project once it reopens.

Additionally, with this being new content that no one knows much about at the moment, please be aware that during the early Odyssey era its possible that some POIs that are submitted and initially rejected could be added later if they turn out to be something out of the norm. And vice-versa - some initially accepted Odyssey POIs may end up being archived as time passes - if they turn out to be commonplace.

The last thing we want to do during the first few months of Odyssey's release is to add everything and anything just because its new and novel content. Everyone will need time to adjust to the update, and accordingly the guidelines on the OP may need to be revised at some point, to bring things up to date.

Upcoming Mapping Initiatives

Finally, the GMP is the oldest community project in Elite Dangerous, having been formed in February 2015, shortly after the game went live. To celebrate its 6th year, there will be some mapping initiatives launched throughout 2021. These will primarily focus on the 'eastern' regions of the galaxy, particularly the Bleak Lands and upper 4th Quadrant.

nHftMQe.jpg

One of the Distant Worlds fleet carriers will be utilised for this.. It'll act as a home base for any explorers that wish to come along and search for new GMP POIs in those regions, as well as basecamp locations for a future Distant Worlds 3 expedition (if there is to be one). The GMP mapping initiatives will be of a very casual nature, with no set schedule or definitive path to follow. They'll be more suited to players who have a spare account gathering dust, one that they don't mind sending out to the depths on a long duration and slow-boat trip aboard the Carrier we'll be using.

More info on this journey will be posted later this year.
