The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Hello Commanders,

I'm honored to have been part of the GMP project. I started as a contributor and "corrector", and was eventually asked to join - I like to think they just got tired of all my subsmissions and figured I could do the work myself. :ROFLMAO:

It's been a long ride. Multiple years of writing and (frequently) re-writing submitted entries; checking submissions for accuracy; deliberating over what was worthy of inclusion (harder than it appears!); and working with the other team-members to make the best community-created catalogue of the Elite Dangerous galaxy.

Thank you to all of my team-mates, and to every single person who contributed over the years. Fly safe.

It's been an honor and privilege, gentlemen. I know in relative terms, I'm a new-comer on the team, and only had a chance to contribute a little directly. But I have to say, the GMP was hugely inspirational when I started out as an explorer, and created something to strive for. I always envisioned EDAstro as working cohesively in an ecosystem with GMP & EDSM, which I think was successful. While the nature of the game and the community both have changed over time, the GMP is still an important part of how we got here. Cheers!

While it is unfortunate the team feels they need to step back, the galaxy and us CMDRs will never forget the wonderful work that you all have done. I can't imagine playing the game without access to the carefully curated database of knowledge that you helped form and maintain over the years.

Fly safely, folks. Thank you for all you did and well done.

Please note that from May 1st 2022 the Galactic Mapping Project will enter Maintenance Mode. Thus no new entries submitted after that date will be added to the community maps.

We feel as though this project has come to the end of its relevance in Elite Dangerous. The project is over 7 years old at the time of this post, and unless there's some radically new content and unique POIs added to Elite Dangerous by the developers, there remains little incentive to continue the project as it was originally intended. We feel the GMP (like the Distant Worlds expeditions which were retired last month), are products of their time and have had their day.

Of course this may change depending on where Elite Dangerous goes during the Odyssey season, and beyond, and whether the galaxy (which at this point is now old and well traveled) gets an overhaul and an injection of new phenomena, explorable environments, or even new entire regions (unlikely but we live in hope). If that ever happens, and if it reawakens the teams passion once more, then a decision to bring the project out of maintenance mode may be revisited.

In the mean time we will honour the promise made to the DSSA initiative two years ago, and that is to continue to add new DSSA deployments that submit their info to the thread, as well as upgrade DSSA POI submissions that qualify for Historical POI status as and when the 2-year anniversary of their deployments is reached. And as always we'll continue to fix links, grammar issues, and add screenshots to existing GMP POI entries if and when people bring them to the teams attention.

For those wishing to share their screenshots and discoveries (on the understanding that they will no longer be added to the community maps), you are of course still welcome to post them to this thread (which will remain open indefinitely as it hosts a lot of archived historical information, not just GMP stuff!), alternatively there is always the Explorers Photography thread, and The Great Big Odyssey Screenshots thread to post them to.

At the end of this year we hope to produce a .pdf booklet with a selection of the best POI entries, maps, and regional descriptions that have been submitted and collated by the GMP going back 7 years to the earliest days of Elite Dangerous. This would be a downloadble memento for those interested, with the possibility it'll become available in printed form too at some point.

Finally, I want to share a message posted to the GMP team recently when this decision was reached. From Corbin Moran, one of the original members of the GMP team and co-creator of the high-definition galaxy map that the GMP, EDSM, and pretty much all third party mapping apps use to this day;

"For me personally it has been an awesome experience to be part of a player driven project that has been enriching the play experience of so many others. I am really, really proud of what we have achieved regarding both the quality of the project, the maps, the writing, the interface, etc - but also the quantity of the staggering number of entries processed and numbers of players engaged with the GMP in various ways. The GMP together with EDSM became a galactic GPS - and for many players it served as a focal point for shared storytelling and community expeditions." - Corbin Moran, April 4th 2022.

We echo those sentiments wholeheartedly.

On behalf of the GMP team, past and present, we want to thank everyone who has supported and contributed to the project since it began back on February 19th 2015. Its been a wonderful project to be a part of and see it grow into what it became.

-Erimus Kamzel (Founder), Corbin Moran (High-def map creator), Anthor (EDSM), Andrew Gaspurr (data entry), Heavy Johnson (data entry), Kazahnn Drahnn (data entry), Jon Burnage (data entry), Baxder (data entry), Orvidius (EDastro).

Greetings Cmdrs,

It's with a heavy heart that I read these few lines announcing the start of GMP maintenance mode. It's a page that is being turned after all these incredible years of participating in this unique community work.

Thanks to the GMP, many ideas and projects have flourished, particularly in the French community with the creation of the Deep Space Network and all that has followed since.

I wanted to thank you all for making us dream all these years with the multitude of entries that were made by all participants.
I am also very proud to have been able to actively participate in the activity of the network, surrounded by a great and very committed team.

I will continue to keep an eye on the thread because there is always something interesting going on.

See you in the black.

Commanders,
it's been an honour to be part of this amazing project for almost six years. The exploration community of ED is an amazing island of creativity and an "I care" attitude that I came to appreciate every moment I was "out there". It's not so much about what hard content made it into the game but rather what made it into the hearts and minds of the people involved. If this hadn't been the case I would probably have quit the game long ago. It's been fascinating to watch all the dedication and enthusiasm of all the contributors go into this project and I think with 288 pages all of you deserve a pat on the shoulder.

As a proud member of the Children of Raxxla I say this: Always remember!

Dear GMP team,

it is my fault that for such a long time, I considered Elite to be "just a game". When I finally bought it some weeks ago, I discovered it to be much more than this, with a galaxy to explore, astronomical background and truly unique views whereever I travel. The most outstanding feature of Elite however is its community. Thank you GMP team for the many years you have devoted into the database in order to make the wonders of the galaxy accessible to new cmdrs.

I get that you enter maintenance only at May 1, so new entries can be made until then?

Frontier you had a 1:1 scale galaxy. Something no one had ever created. But you did precious little with it.

We could have had;
A variety of new alien races to discover out there, ones that offer more than target practice.
Black holes that were actually dangerous.
Proto star systems.
Accretion disks.
More handcrafted nebulae (instead of the copy and pasted efforts we find beyond the local region)
Globular clusters and a means in which to reach and explore them.
More colonies like Colonia.
Exploration based missions! Seriously why aren't there any after 8 years of development?

There was so much potential there, but after 7 / 8 years, we got copy and pasted plants.

I saw this posted on the Elite reddit this morning and it pretty much nails it in my opinion. I hope Frontier take note and realize why long established and respected community initiatives like this one are closing down. The exploration community these days is a shadow of what it once was because they were always an afterthought when it came to development decisions.

Name:Twins near the rings
Game map search ref:Phoo Chreou YA-E d12-86
Description:You arrive on a blue giant with 3 moons with rings.
Then you approach the space between the rings of the giant to find the other 3 moons, including a very close pair (about 12,000 km between the 2 moons) at the limit of the inner ring.

Finally you land on the surface of Phoo Chreou YA-E d12-86 11 A and you admire the view of the twin planet

Name:The Four Twins
Game map search ref:Prielu QU-W D2-9
Description:Discovered during the Lost Souls 3 expedition , this system contains 4 twins with some remarkable sights:
  • Two adjacent landable ringed HMCs, each with its own close moon. One of the moons has a high inclination, which allows magnificent views towards the ring of the HMC while landed.
  • Two adjacent landable ringed HMCs, circling each other
  • Two adjacent ringed Class III gas giants, each circling its own HMC
  • Two adjacent moons each with landable secondary moons in close & fast orbit (4hrs / 5hrs) and again nice vistas

In addition, the system shows a brown dwarf with a wide ring and a Class III giant with a nice rose-color tint.

Sad coincidence. I watched Obsidian Ants video he made of the mapping project a while ago and marveled at how creative this community is.

I hope other projects like it will keep the tradition going, and the expeditions that used it are still being planned by someone, someday.

Thanks to all those who paved the way. 😿
I remember the first time I saw that video - it literally gave me goosebumbs and I was SO PROUD that the project I was a part of got featured like that :)

To me the GMP brought a new creative dimension to the game - and the joy of building something together as a team and a community.
Thank you to all in the community who participated, contributed, engaged with, and promoted the GMP over the years.
Thank you to everyone on the team for contributing your skills and effort - working with you has has been inspiring and fun and something I cherish!

I feel a special shoutout is due to Anthor and the EDSM team for providing the GMP with the interactive platform that really helped the project take off.

And finally a very special thanks to Erimus:
You have a gift for inspiring others and for making projects come to life. I believe a great part of that gift is the generosity and courage it takes to share ownership.

Let me know what you come up with, with Anthor. I've been kicking the idea around of creating a crowdsourced POI system on EDAstro. The focus would be very different than what the GMP has been, since the idea would be for everyone to create their own POIs to share, and then everyone could vote on them, resulting in scores that can be used to filter the list or highlight particularly good POIs.

Here's what I've been thinking:
  • Accounts can create/edit their own POIs
  • Everyone can rate other POIs with 1-5 stars
  • Designated curators also vote on POIs
  • POIs receive scores based on number and quality of votes.
  • POIs have two scores- One from curators, one from everyone else.
Nothing is set in stone, and I'm just throwing around ideas at the moment. Before starting on something like that, I want to make sure I'm not duplicating effort, so whether Anthor helps with a project on EDSM is something I'd like to consider.

A necessary first step is account management, registration, and logins, and I have that part working on EDAstro now.

EDIT: I'll start a separate thread to discuss this in more detail.
Only suggestion I have here is to have a "karma" system similar to the forums, rather than a rating system, as people could use the latter to review-bomb other people's POIs. Then the particularly good POIs could be judged based on the total number of likes.

Lovely sentiments Corbin. I'm sure thousands of explorers who've been a part of this project, or used it in some way during their travels, will echo your words. Well said :)

That video was very well made. One of Obsidian Ant's earlier ones from a time when the creativity and enthusiasm for Elite was at its height. Around that time too I also remember reading quite an in depth article in one of the video game magazines that featured the Galactic Mapping Project too. Could have been Polygon?

Its sad the GMP is ending but I think a lot of us know the golden age of exploration has gone and probably won't be coming back. Its a playstyle that just isn't on Frontiers radar anymore- if it ever was. Que sera sera.

Sad news but nothing lasts forever. I will continue exploring on this game until I am unable to or Frontier pulls the plug. Good luck in all the people of GMP do in the future.

at this rate Elite Dangerous will die out sooner that latter. sadly for me it is the only space exploration game that i can actually play so i am stuck with it until the bitter end. Elite Dangerous has potential to be much much more than it is now it seams like the DEVs no long care about the game anymore.
😞

To the contrary, I think it's a testament to something tenacious in ED, despite its flaws, that it's living long enough to see the founding generation of super-supporters step back. It's not quite as simple a story as "out with the old in with the new" but I am interested to see what new flowers bloom in GMP's place.

As someone rightly mentioned in this thread the other day, if the game content offers nothing new that the old events and projects were built upon, then is it really worth bothering because the fundamental issues that are causing projects like this one to close down, will still be there for whatever new projects spring up afterwards.

Exploration needs to offer players more than what players 7 or 8 years ago were experiencing. If it had I'm sure projects like this would still be thriving. Copy/pasted plants + sunsets + copy/pasted biomes were a cheapest viable product thrown out there as an afterthought, while the resources went on FPS no one asked for. That's what exploration has come to in Elite.

It is sad the hear about the closure for new entries. I'm always on the look out for something worthy of inclusion on edsm.net, but it's not to be. I rediscovered be Elite in May last year having only ever played the 1984 ZX Spectrum version before. I often feel I came to Elite Dangerous too late and after its peak. Odyssey adds a lot, but also trashes graphics quality with aliasing issues, especially around stations. When put exploring, I think Odyssey does well with the new stuff it brings. I like the on foot element of exploring, although wish I could walk onto my ship properly. I'm not interested in any of the FPS game play or suit and gun engineering. It is unfortunate Odyssey removes anything planet surface based ever added to edsm.net though.
