Watching some reviews and I think I'm gonna go for for the x52 after hearing about the sticking on the x55, seems like too much of a liablity even though I love the look of the throttle buttons on the base. Also with the x52 can the nobs be bound to a function in ED outside of ship movement.

I think you can push the nobs and they act as a button (it's been a while since I've had an x52, this may be bad information). And there *are* axes in the game other than movement axes, but the only one I have ever bound is sensor zoom and I'd be perfectly happy if I didn't have it. I do remember looking for something to bind my extra slider to and that was the most useful thing I could find. I think all of the other axes are things that are not used while flying, like galaxy map rotation/translation, and I just use my stick axes for those.

So I guess I'm saying the nobs will be close to useless. But I expect Frontier has to have "control binding overhaul" on their to-do list somewhere, since there is so much (mostly little things) missing from there right now, maybe it's just a matter of time until this is no longer the case? I can dream, at least.

My X52 Pro and pedals arrived today - woo!

I am fairly impressed with the hardware, it's solid and seems well made.

Unfortunately it doesn't click, and the old trick of holding the base and waggling the joystick has got me absolutely nowhere in Daley Thompsons Decathlon :(

Where am I going wrong?

Anyway - it's all nice and shiny, but I don't have a clue on how to use any of it lol. Going to practice for a bit and see what I can program. I definitely want an option to switch to purple mode, uncage the safety trigger thing, press it, and dump 20 tons of Slave Dung :)

There are holes in the base of the controllers for screws to go through to fix them down so you can thrash the controllers around to your hearts content. Screwed my older X52 down to the table.

The default settings for the X52 work fine. You can set the buttons in the options menu in Elite: Dangerous.
Here's a reference I made earlier. There should be no difference between the X52 and the X52 Pro.

Good luck with your X52 and happy (bounty) hunting.:)

Saitek Joystick advice please?

Hi,

I currently have a Logitech force-feedback joystick, but I think it is worn out and on the verge of breaking.

I am thinking of getting a Saitek but don't know much about them. I'm looking for recommendations, and would be grateful to know:

1. Do the Saitek joysticks incorporate force-feedback?
2. My desk space is limited, so ideally I would want one where the throttle control is built into the main joystick (i.e. not on a separate throttle unit that would take up a lot of space). Is there a model that is built this way?

Thanks a lot!

Saitek has the Cyborg F.L.Y 5 and Aviator sticks with build in throttle. Haven't used either, but I heard the cyborg one breaks very easily. None of the Saitek sticks have force feedback as far as I know.

Logitech 3d pro also has a small throttle lever. The stick is one of the most popular budget controllers and is much better quality that the cheaper saitek ones.

Thrustmaster do two sticks that fit your requirements. The T Flight Stick X and the T 16000M. I have not used either but I do have the T Flight HOTAS X which is basically the T Flight Stick X (with fewer buttons) and a separate throttle and it is perfectly serviceable. Thrustmaster are known for making some quality sticks. Force feedback is something that is becoming more rare to find in PC sticks.

I am currently using only the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and Keyboard and Mouse. I plan to get the TrackIR pro first. Then I plan to get the CH pro rudder pedals. After that, the CH combat stick and pro throttle. I will complete my setup with the CH multifunction panel. I think I will have everything I need at that point, no need for any further products.

I've showed off my setup before, but not in this thread. I have a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS (best HOTAS for budget minded pilots) and converted a spare keyboard and turned it into a dedicated control panel, with a second smaller keyboard for text typing purposes. I then realized that the control panel would be much easier to see and use if it was more vertical, not to mention make the setup more cockpit like. I also have a IR headtracking setup using a Playstation 3 eye camera.

A cheap but effective (and immersive!) setup.

Joystick + Keyboard

Quick question: Is it possible to use a HOTAS / stick, *and* have ED accept keyboard commands for pitch, roll etc.?

I use a mouse for pitch/yaw and the KB for roll, it's a custom control setup but I can't see why you can't do the same with a joystick and KB

I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick with my right hand for flying but don't use the base buttons at all as I use the KB with my left hand for everthing else. The controls menu in the game's settings allow you to configure all of them the way you want.

Both at the same time? - i.e. attitude controls mapped to stick *and* KB?

Every control has the ability to have two separate controls for it. Go to controls and you'll see two columns, some of which are mapped. I use "oolite" style controls on my numpad for pitch and roll so I can dock with the keyboard alone if I'm running around daft at work, cooking etc.

Some really interesting setups and discussions here. I've only read a few entries but I think there is some good advice and information to take from this thread.

I just picked up a Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y 5 after having popped into PC World after work. They didn't have much (not really surprising) and I've enjoyed Cyborg hardware in the past. The stick looks great, like my old Graphite/Carbon model and it's all adjustable to suit your dimensions and reach with a dual throttle stick in addition. I must say and admit though, this joystick is a lot flimsier than I expected which could put a lot of people off. At £50, I suppose there has to be an element of quality scaling considering the more expensive HOTAS sticks need to stand above the rest. Handling the stick in-game though, it does not feel flimsy.

The action is nice and smooth although the base-buttons could be placed better (although the fact the whole thing dismantles and folds up is another negative point in terms of compromise). Personally, I can't complain. My mindset is that you shouldn't be throwing the stick around if you know what you are doing... smooth, precise adjustments should see your target off rather than reacting too late and tearing the stick from the base. I haven't played a flight/space sim in a long time though so it is taking me a while to get back into the feel of things as well as setting everything up 'just so'.

TBH, the Cyborg FLY 5 looks better than it actually is. If I played more seriously, I'd be disappointed with my purchase. But like I said, I can't complain, I might have been able to buy a better stick with the same amount of money but the FLY 5 isn't totally crap either. Tbh, anything would've done and the rest is fine tuning the controls from the options menu IMO. Others might have 'higher standards' than me but I just wanted to enjoy Elite Dangerous without having to use a keyboard/mouse or a console controller.

Anyone else with a Cyborg FLY 5, hit me up... tell me what if you agree with me or not.

Happy flying xD

NB_ I also have a Logitech G13 Gameboard which I used on/off for MMORPGs. It has a load of buttons and a joystick/hat, very useful for games with lots and lots of buttons to assign to. When I get more into the ELITE Dangerous and discover my own 'method' of what commands and controls I use most, I may use the gameboard in tandem with the joystick. Maybe it would be nice to keep flight/combat controls totally separate from everything else rather than have duel function! I don't know yet.

I'm currently using a random Logitech keyboard I found in my closet and a Kensington Expert Trackball. I actually GREATLY prefer a trackball over a traditional mouse, if I'm gonna be stuck using a mouse - I don't mind needing to make large, sweeping motions to quickly track targets since APM isn't quite as important in a game like this one, and with a trackball you can do that without running out of real estate on your desk.

However, I also recently discovered an old Logitech Attack 3 that I had found at a thrift store was still in my closet and still in perfectly good condition. It has no Z axis, so it isn't really any good as a primary stick - however, with a second stick (maybe an Extreme 3D) I could run a dual-sticks setup. I'm pretty close to just going ahead and doing it. ^^
