So far, loving the T16000M stick. Very smooth and the buttons feel proper. The base buttons are awkward to reach, but once my CH throttle arrives, I'll probably forget most of them other than low-use stuff like landing gear, cargo scoop, etc. Might even try dual stick for a bit just to see how comfortable (or not) it is.

Some really interesting setups and discussions here. I've only read a few entries but I think there is some good advice and information to take from this thread.

I just picked up a Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y 5 after having popped into PC World after work. They didn't have much (not really surprising) and I've enjoyed Cyborg hardware in the past. The stick looks great, like my old Graphite/Carbon model and it's all adjustable to suit your dimensions and reach with a dual throttle stick in addition. I must say and admit though, this joystick is a lot flimsier than I expected which could put a lot of people off. At £50, I suppose there has to be an element of quality scaling considering the more expensive HOTAS sticks need to stand above the rest. Handling the stick in-game though, it does not feel flimsy.

The action is nice and smooth although the base-buttons could be placed better (although the fact the whole thing dismantles and folds up is another negative point in terms of compromise). Personally, I can't complain. My mindset is that you shouldn't be throwing the stick around if you know what you are doing... smooth, precise adjustments should see your target off rather than reacting too late and tearing the stick from the base. I haven't played a flight/space sim in a long time though so it is taking me a while to get back into the feel of things as well as setting everything up 'just so'.

TBH, the Cyborg FLY 5 looks better than it actually is. If I played more seriously, I'd be disappointed with my purchase. But like I said, I can't complain, I might have been able to buy a better stick with the same amount of money but the FLY 5 isn't totally crap either. Tbh, anything would've done and the rest is fine tuning the controls from the options menu IMO. Others might have 'higher standards' than me but I just wanted to enjoy Elite Dangerous without having to use a keyboard/mouse or a console controller.

Anyone else with a Cyborg FLY 5, hit me up... tell me what if you agree with me or not.

Happy flying xD

NB_ I also have a Logitech G13 Gameboard which I used on/off for MMORPGs. It has a load of buttons and a joystick/hat, very useful for games with lots and lots of buttons to assign to. When I get more into the ELITE Dangerous and discover my own 'method' of what commands and controls I use most, I may use the gameboard in tandem with the joystick. Maybe it would be nice to keep flight/combat controls totally separate from everything else rather than have duel function! I don't know yet.

I use the FLY 5 and love it, have been using it heavily daily since December and it hasn't missed a beat. The flimsyness of it did concern me at first but when my hand is using it; it is a lot more solid. Can't say I regret buying it as I there is nothing I could get better for the money (placement if the dual throttle and buttons etc.) Sure I would love to buy a proper HOTAS, but who has that kind of money! *looks around the forum* oh yeah...

You know what? I'm glad you like it, I feel better now lol. I think my post came across a little more negative than I intended. I like the Cyborg FLY 5 also, it was mostly the flimsiness on initial inspection that bothered me. But it doesn't feel flimsy during game play. And like I said - it looks damn cool! xD

I have tried using thrustmaster hotas. I cant seem to set it up, use it etc. help would be appreciated. I also have an issue with the throttle being loose. I think it would be better if it was stiffer than it is as standard. though I wouldn't know what standard is supposed to be like. are all loose or is it just mine. I ask because this is my first joystick. it is new (is there any advice on how to stiffen the throttle?)
cheers

hi, which hotas do you have? the whartog or the smaller one?

Anyone with problems with their joysticks?

When I first started playing E: D I was pretty much broke, to a degree that I had to cut down on my food expenses. It was quite obvious I couldn't even possibly afford a decent HOTAS. I ended up buying a cheap a** cyborg v1 joystick instead.

The problem is that the joystick and the game doesn't want to get along with each other. Every time I launch E: D it would totally mess with the X-axis' center of input, so my ship would keep pitching downwards hard without me even touching the joystick.

I first thought my joystick was defect, but no. I've tested it with various other games, and only E: D is showing this symptom.

I did find a workaround, but it's only a temporary solution. Every time I alt-tab and back, there is 50-50 chance that E: D plays its dirty tricks and joystick will be off-center again. Then I have to go through the Windows control panel, open game controller settings, do a recalibration, plug out, plug in, alt-tab back all over again.

Anyone encountered this issue besides me?

Well i have a MadCatz (Fly 4?) that keeps yawing right, no idea if its elite or this joystick that is causing it, but it sure is annoying.

I have used the cyborg V1 and currently using the FLY 5, no issues with either. I do get what you describe sometimes, but that is my own fault when touching the stick and alt-tabbing at the same time. Another quick alt-tab sorts it right out.

It's probably your stick the issue not the game, honestly you should have saved up 30$ more and got a t16000m or just waited till it was on sale.

Nonsense! He has already said it works fine in other games.

@op, have you tried different drivers? The basic windows ones might be better if you can lice without the macro software that the stick cones with

Nonsense! others are having problems with this stick like ogtroff and kola, thing is it is a cheap stick that is cheap...set a deadzone.

I did lots and lots and lots of research before buying a new stick and money was an issue for me too which is why I went with the t16000mm most saitek/mad catz stuff has a very bad rep for being hit and miss when it comes to quality.

I totally agree with you on the quality if saitek/madcatz but the fact still remains that according to the OP, its working fine in other games, so we must assume he is telling the truth. And if his statement that it's pitching 'downwards hard' is true also; the deadzone would need to be huge!

We can only go by what the OP tells us, and you know what making assumptions does. ;)

Just sounds like a calibration ( a quick google search showed me others have had similar problems like that to even it not wanting to calibrate anymore at all) issues which to me indicates it is the joystick the problem, otherwise I think we would see other sticks doing this if it was ED in fault. My t16000m plug in no set up required zero deadzones.

Also Tepescovir has a point having a controlled plugged in can cause your joystick to go nutty like that.

Anyway not trying to be a meanie here. :)

Hope OP gets it working properlyn sucks when you want to play and have to fiddle around with your toys instead!

I had the same stick and couldn't 'stick' it for long. Same issues, constantly readjusting deadzones. For a little bit more the Logitech Extreme 3D is a great stick. I prefer it to the X-55 stick.
