I've used both X-55 and CH setups and prefer the CH setup. The things that swung it in the CH's favour were:
  • The CH throttle has a mouse that works, which is very handy for thrusters
  • The CH stick has a four-way button at the thumb's natural position
  • Both throttle and stick are very smooth

Using pedals takes a bit of practice but is more accurate than using a twist stick.

The only bad things I can say for the CH setup is the throttle doesn't have a centre detent, and the various hats on the top of the stick aren't easy to reach with your hand in its natural position (although that applies to the X-55 as well).

And if you have either X-55 or CH setups you can generate a reference sheet from the link in my signature.

Can't play again until Amazon delivers the replacement. :(

This time I went for a Hotas. :D

Let's hope it lasts longer than the Mad Catz did.

Same here my X55 throttle has some buttons not working now after just over a year. Sent a customer support to Saitek though. Will get the new one tomorrow and then will fix the old one when I am at work next week. I have all the gear there to take it apart and solder the cables back or replace if needs be.

I am still using a MAD CATZ Cyborg Fly 5 Joystick that I purchased when I started playing in beta. some of the buttons have stopped working but the joystick it's self works perfectly. Will look at something a bit better when it finally gives up.

What we need is a decently constructed HOTAS with a Z-axis on the joystick, someone like Razer should step up to the plate. The Warthog isn't an option sadly since it's lacking a Z-axis and I would be unwilling to play without one.

Haha, I thought I was the only one
Got mine for over 15 years maybe, don't know for sure. I'm positive that when I bought it, there was no Euro currency, so yeah... :p
It's still looking and working as good as new!
Yeah i had the first MSFFB1 but was gameport config so got the 2nd one and binned the 1st.
They are so good i purchased 2 of them on ebay. I have been into flight sims for over 35 years and ive owned all stick from the CH fighterstick to the Warthog to the Legendary Die cast Thrustmaster Cougar with modded Gimballs that i fitted myself.

The MFFB2 is by far the most comfortable, the CH stick are good but they are meant to be placed between your legs instead of on a table and they are made for bigger hands. They also are quite loose with no feedback whatsoever. They are built to last though, i sold mine in mint condition. The logitech G940 Hotas is good also, i used that alot playing Rise of flight for around 400hrs. I had a logitech wingman snap in my hand lol when playing Falcon BMS by trying to evade 3 SAMS launched at me (SA-6). They are also very very loose and do have twist control

Braben has said that Force feedback will come further down the line which is why i planned well ahead as im combat flight sim fan. Go on any flight sim forum and you will see that the MSFFB2 is regarding as one of the best sticks ever made. The flight sim people use these sticks day in day out so they know the pros and cons of all the sticks. They know what there talking about. For me anyhow The MSFFB2 is the best stick and most comfortable by alongway.

On a side note i also have a CH products "Franken Potato" Throttle.

I use a Logitech G940 (stick, throttle and pedals) - works very well. I don't think Logitech make them any more though.

I couldn't play without pedals now - I miss the HOTAS when I play the Xbone version.

Also, get some head-tracking, like the Track-IR or equivalent - you will never look back (or, you will, because you can!).

Lets see... Afrer 5 months I regularly had to recalibrate the damn thing. After 8 months the Joy 2 sometimes started getting stuck after pressing. After 10 months Joy 8,9, 10 got stuck after pressing. Since one of them is my FA off toggle, things got ugly fast. After 11 months pulling the stick towards me often only recognized a 50% of the way and now I can't make fast turns reliably anymore.

And the thing feels a lot more sturdy than that plastic toy thrustmaster hotas X I unboxed at the store this weekend.
Being one of the cheaper sticks, the quality is prone to vary quite a lot. Looks like you got one of the 'monday' specimens. :)

I'm on my 2nd Logitech Extreme 3D Pro now, 1st one lasted flawlessly* 5 years of Oolite and a year of E: D, and was fine for 9 months more (less so towards the end of that period). Button 9 started becoming unresponsive and twist axis (yaw in my setup) developed increasing drift & spikes in the end, so I decided to get another (one of the few sticks in stock in stores around here).

* that is, the inherent flaws like having to set deadzones to stop drifting, not becoming worse

So far so good. :)

BTW, don't know if this is common knowledge, but doing a sort of calibration exercise (all axes to both extremes and then center) when starting to control your ship in E: D (noticed this when I started using the stick with Oolite and the ship was rolling without touching the stick, the procedure cures that always) stabilises the controls. No need to calibrate the stick via Win CP.

Oh, and I have Logitech Gaming Software running (Win 7, works fine) to increase accuracy / decrease sensitivity near axis centers a bit. I don't remember if I downloaded the latest version from Logitech website, or is the version I use from G25 wheel installation disk, but it seems to work - start LGS, select E: D profile (custom, modded from my custom Oolite profile), hide profiler, start E: D, do calibration exercise (I think this is needed for the profiler to kick in, not sure about it though), fly Dangerous. :)

About these joyful sticks and whatnot... they all in general are built robust-like. Any for female to grip that doesn't require bicep of a gorilla?

I've got the Thrustmaster HOTAS X and I find it's manageable.
However, interdictions and CZ's make me quite tense and it does make my arm ache after a while.
Thanks to those who suggested looking at adjusting the tension - I hadn't thought of that!

Can anyone help a newbie like myself with the bindings on an X52? I'm new to this & find it all very overwhelming. Cheers. :)

Isn't the X52 automatically recognized and mapped by ED? At least mine was the first time I used it with ED. Only had to make minor adjustments to the default bindings.

if you click the "Presets" popup menu in "Options" -> "Controls", doesn't the X52 appear there?

i bought the normal Thrustmaster x with it too , so 2 sticks and one trhottle. enough buttons , one stick for up down left right and one for pitch , roll and yaw.

works well in my opinion and cheap too.

Also does anyone have a view about the Logitech 3d pro? I've seen it going cheap somewhere..:)

I have used the Logitech 3D Pro for over 3 years now and it is still working great! I use Voice Attack or keyboard for a few infrequent non-combat related key presses as it has limited buttons compared to a HOTAS setup but for the price and quality of build you can't go wrong.

A CMDR buddy with the SAITEK x52 still has his old Logi Pro 3d and I use it when I bring my lappy to his place to do Elite (saving me bringing my own stick).

I recently had a CMDR buddy buy the SAITEK x52 and he sent it back and bought one of these Logitech (he had borrowed my buddies one for a week prior and didn't like the feel of the Saitek after that-spoiled him).

I would pay more and get a Warthog. Superb build construction and very easy to mod the keys.

I bought the Warthog.

After 2 months a button on the throttle stopped working
After 4 months a button on the stick stopped working
The stick has adopted a permanent lean to the left. Of I take my hand off the ship barrel rolls.

I would not recommend one if it was half the price.

I may of course have a Monday built example.

Well my X-52 pro works as intended most of the time. Sometimes the throttle doesn't fully go to zero so I have to reboot it (that is, unplug the usb and plug it back) but otherwise it's ok.

CH Fighterstick and CH Pro Throttle. Installed today after my X52 pro bit the dust. I only had it just over a year, just enough for the warranty to run out.
I should have listened to the warnings. Heed the warnings folks.

Just got myself a very good condition used F.L.Y 5
I'm not in the tens of hours a week of gaming category so hopefully the build quality is good enough to last for now. Plus I fix electronics so breakdowns should be solveable!

I have been using an Xbox one controller. The idea of a stick has taken (~taking) some getting used to. What i lose in muscle memory i have certainly gained in the immersive feeling given by a flight stick.
This coupled with power grid and I have all the bindings i need!
