I would guess the answer is "because they designed it that way".

I get really upset that my car does not have rear heated seats. I think it is ridiculous that in this day and age they don't on all cars, after all some cars do. I think MY car company should retrofit rear seat heaters because I want them.

This is the year 2015. I haven't seen a joystick for sale with only two buttons for over 20 years, so why can we only assign two buttons to a fire group?

I want a button for KWS, one for lasers, one for cannons and probably one for missiles too.
Then there's chaff and shield cells (Yes, I know you can assign those separately in the game's control settings but they're available to be set into fire groups so why not be able to assign them there too?)

Agreed. Little bit frustrating, but with the help of VoiceAttack and my trusty Shift key; I got around it. Chaff and Shield cells don't have to be in a group, which is nice since in VoiceAttack I just say the command "Chaff" or "Cell" and the appropriate key is pressed. When it comes to things like the KWS, it would be nice to be able to assign more keys, so at the moment I've assigned "next fire group" and "prior fire group" to my hat by way of the SHIFT key. If I hold shift and tap the hat right or left, it'll change group (next or prior respectively) (this got difficult in the middle of combat so I stuck the commands into VoiceAttack instead - now "next group" or "prior group" changes it). I did the same for sub-system targeting, hold Shift, press FSD button (useless in combat) and it'll switch to a different sub.

Just an idea for the interim until FD add the support for more buttons (or tell you it was a design decision because [reasons some people won't accept]. :p).

You're really putting that forward as a comparable metaphor?

Ok, I Am a mouse user ; but that said. how many weapons/modules do you really need to fire off at any one time? Also, switching between firegroups can be assigned to any button, organises the screen layout on the HUD and can be done so swiftly it really doesnt affect how well the game can be played - does it?

Hang about, i'm a 12 button mouse user! ... Hell yeah, i wanna let those railguns n rockets rip into the side of his freshly bounty scanned behind!!!

it is just as pointless.

It is a design that was made for ED. Everyone has different things that they want. I personally want Windows to have several functions that I would prefer, but I know that complaining about it won't actually achieve anything.

This is what we have to work with. Is it terrible? no. Is it perfect? no. welcome to life, there are so many other things that could and should be improved before reaching the point of complaining about wanting another fire button.

Correct, you don't have 6 axis control unless you have 2 sticks.
But you need "hands on" on your throttle in combat to micromanage it, just having it in "optimum" at all times is going to keep you at an disadvantage.

I would imagine a slider you'd have to let go of something else first could be a hassle, but I am not sure.

I have 19 buttons on my mouse.

LOL, did you have to take a piano course prior to started palying ED?

+1 for the OP, fire grouping only makes sense if the number of possibilities are reflecting to the number of weapons/other systems available to be used together. Like the KWS is usually followed by 2 fire buttons but now there's a switch between them somewhere and that may slight the advantage of the attacker.
Anyway this is something I can live with though.

Yes. It is to balance between joystick user and mouse user.

There are people playing the game with just a mouse?! I would have thought that mouse users would also be using a keyboard, which tends to have more available buttons than even the most blinged-out HOTAS setup.

More likely, it's to balance between PC gamers who have many buttons available either on a HOTAS or KB+M, and people using a console controller which is designed to require both hands but provides incredibly few buttons. Honestly I'm not sure why they insist on crippling PC gaming setups in order to support console controllers, but that's what they've done so we just have to deal with it.

It's also to balance for gampad users. It's only *just* possible to fit all the combat essential buttons on the xbox controller, any extra would be to their disadvantage. FD said many of them perfer to use the gamepad.

If you have the throttle at optimal, your thrusters handle the rest of the work. I have no trouble going forward or back at full.

Of curse fa off isn't going to work that way.

My solution is going to ultimately be to use a pedal for throttle. It won't stay set to a given value without input, but neither does the one in any car I've ever driven.

Well, you could actually bind it to stay in given position.
Use the peddles as increment controllers.

Like when you use the left pedal, it throttles a bit down and when you let go of the pedal it stays where you left it.
Maybe even bind it so when you hit both, it resets throttle or something.

I have never owned a mouse with more than 3 buttons. How and why do you need 19?

I have a joystick for flying games and a wheel for racing games, though.

the extra buttons are quite useful for various game styles FPS, RTS, 4X... they would definitely come in handy for space sim as well in case you dont have a joystick or hotas.

I would really like to have a tertiary fire button available for ED.

It's a design decision, so the player has to conciously decide whether to combine that KWS with his beam lasers, set it as a seperate weapon, or move it to a different group entirely. They could've made the KWS function entirely passively, just like how the exploration scanner works, but opted to make it an active function instead. The whole idea of having weapongroups would've been pointless in the first place if it was just a matter of "assign to key XYZ".

Few mice with just two buttons these days.

If FD are using this as a reason as to why you can't set up more than 2 buttons, then I'm now convinced David Braben has been in stasis for the last 30 years and was flabbergasted when he saw his first USB stick!!
