If you go X52, be sure to take the bottom plate off the joystick, and add some extra buffer between the tiny wires, and the end of the sharp metal rod they exit. Soldering these tiny wires is no fun.

X55, install the drivers and NOT the software though. Once that's figured out, it's the best thing I've wrapped my finger around for yonks.

I have an X52 which i got 2nd hand on ebay for £70, from an RAF pilot as it happens who had only used it twice for training :D
It's a great piece of kit, but yes, pricey at £150 ish.
Lots of my mates use the T-Flight Hotas, very good value @ £30.

The X52 pro is great fun, lots of buttons and matching design with ED. Sadly the price is much too high for the poor quality. It is just a costly toy, nothing professional about it. However, I think I would buy it again.

If you can live without jaw twist or if you want to use pedals you better get a Ch product.

I went with CH for joystick and throttle. No rudder twist though. I have pedals for those.

Not as pretty as the Saitek's, but very ergonomic, solid, and has a handy minijoystick on the throttle for translational thrust.

Here's Brumster's comparison.

I'd recommend CH over any newer X-series for overall reliability. CH makes products for industry and their kit lasts forever. No twist though, so that could be a dealbreaker if you want that.

Madcatz QC and support is weak. IF you get a good X it will probably rock; otherwise you'll spend a lot of time sending things back and pulling things apart yourself.

Hello everyone. figured this was the best place for this so here goes.
I'm new, as in new to PC gaming, new to using a flight stick, new to Elite: Dangerous. Just straight new.

So incredibly excited that I finally have a computer and Elite Dangerous AND a flightstick(F.L.Y. 5)
However, I can't seem to get it to work. I've gone into the control options and tried to tinker around there, but the trigger and buttons 2-5 won't register as being activated.

sorry if this post is in the wrong thread, but after an hour of searching on google I can't find anything that will help someone as new to computers as myself fix the problem.

If any of you can help, or at least point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.

Well, you're partly right, it's cheap. Shocking build quality, and develops a massive deadzone after some wear and tear. Buy cheap, buy twice. People on a budget could look at:

http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-2960706-Thrustmaster-T-16000M-Flight/dp/B001S0RTU0

..which has Hall Effect sensors. The buttons feel cheap, but they work. However, maybe an X-55 would be a smarter move, if the OP is prepared to lubricate the yaw twist.

Started ED about 5 weeks ago; 2 weeks in I ordered the X55 and I love it. Great feel, plenty of buttons, switches, etc. to program as you wish. Highly recommend it to anyone. No, it's not cheap, but then you do get what you pay for, and I'm a big believer in "the quality will be remembered and appreciated long after the price is forgotten."

T-16000M is indeed the cheapest good solution. ive been playing with it since alpha and although id love to replace it with the x52 pro like my brother has the urge to do so is minimal.
i even have been looking for a loose throttle but the next best thing can only be ordered in Russian territory and that seems a bit difficult at the moment :)

It's not cheap, but the CH Pro Throttle is really nice. The danger is that you'd eventually be tempted to get the CH Fighter Stick to go with it :)

Can you get left handed ones?

Nope. Some people use dual sticks (like the TM16000M), as it's an ambidextrous layout (if that's even the right term?). There aren't any left-handed HOTAS, sadly. Some lefties just learn to deal, and claim it's OK too- but I can't comment on how satisfactory that is. I suspect the problem is that HOTAS controls are often modelled after fighter controls, and they don't tend to make a lefty version of those.

Some people have claimed they get on ok with the X52/pro as a lefty, even using it in a right-handed config. Obviously, YMMV.
