In what way has it broken?

There are known issues with the build quality control of Saitek X52s, but many of the problems - unresponsive throttle buttons, broken detents on the throttle, for example - are easily fixed at home with a screwdriver, a bit of glue and not caring about your warranty.

There is something like a plastic washer that is riding up and impinging movement of the stick. I can reset it, but don't know how to stop it riding up again.

My X52 has broken after about 4 months, and the software has always been bad. What are my alternatives? I am very fond of twist rudder, but will go to foot rudder if absolutely necessary.

Just get pedals no matter what joystick you have. I have left and right thrust on the pedals. And up and down thrust on the pedal toe brakes. Makes you into a combat demon. I also use a "cheap" Logitech 3D Pro with the twist rudder for yaw.
I have a Thrustmaster Warthog but save that for DCS A10C sessions.

If you dont need the seperate throttle stick I am about 18 months with a T16000m and it still works well, plenty buttons if you use voice attack as well. I wanted the CH throttle to go with it but was advised against this course by the wife...

I too went with a Thrustmaster T16000M joystick plus CH Pro Throttle. The joystick is good value for money and the CH throttle is the absolute best -- solid construction and convenient buttons.

I avoided buying a stick with twist rudder for this very reason. It is something that has been noted by reviewers on SimHQ. The only thing I can think of, barring completely disabling it, is to set a dead zone that is bigger than how much you twist it during normal flight.

I have a venerable Microsoft Force Feedback 2 paired (recently) with a CH Pro Throttle. It is FANTASTIC... The twist for Yaw on the stick is absolutely bang on accurate. They were well known in the day for super build quality. Microsoft had to stop making them in the end because they were not making any profit due to the OTT build quality. I have just bought a second one on eBay (£50) as a backup spare in case my one fails (no sign of that, but I just couldn't bear to be without it!!!) Even the force feedback still works in a subliminal generic and understated but cool way still, as FD don't support force feedback in ED. The CH is of similar (but more recent) build and quality and partners the Microsoft stick superbly. It is just such a smooth, accurate and VERY ergonomic setup, and looks understated and classy compared to some of the more recent popular HOTAS's. I can't recommend this pair enough (No software needed either...all recognised by ED (except the little mini joystick nipple on the CH Throttle, which is a known issue due to FD/ED)

Started with m&kb, moved to keyboard and Logitech E3D Pro and now have CH HOTAS (Pro Throttle and Fighterstick). The only time I touch the keyboard now is when taking pictures in camera debug mode. Excellent HOTAS that covers all the bases.

Tannik Seldon's dual joystick setup

I've had a few requests to publish my control layout, so without further ado:

Czonpfg.png

Right stick: Thrustmaster T-16000m ($45)
Left stick: Logitech Extreme 3d pro ($35)
Total cost: $80

Some notes:

The 3d pro isn't designed as a left handed stick, but I find it works well enough for me anyway. I use it on the left because it's easier for me to have the extra "shift" buttons be in the off hand, and the T-16000m on the right lets me take advantage of its excellent hall-sensor precision for fine aiming.

The base throttle on the left stick is only really used for supercruise.

The left hat "Headlook Enabled" toggle, in conjunction with turning "Display Mouse widget" on, lets me show/hide the center dot whenever I want (even if I'm not interested in using headlook).

There's quite a bit of room for further tweaking and adding more binds, but I haven't had any need to do so since Wings.

Naturally, anyone who wants to use this as a starting point for their own dual-stick config is encouraged to tweak it to suit their own preference. I'd love to hear about any useful tricks you discover!

Also happy to answer any questions.

Nice, I have the exact same layout for movement on mine. Don't you find having to switch between modes annoying? I got the X52 pro for right hand and the T16000M for left simply because of the greater number of buttons.

(Also have you tried getting a dual stick layout in That Other Space Sim working? I tried briefly but quit out of disgust, the custom bindings options are sorely lacking)

Switching between FA off and on, you mean? It's no more jarring than with any other control scheme I've tried.

As far as That Other Sim, haven't bothered at all since E:D released. I'll wait for things to get more stable and solid.

Aren't this two right hand sticks?
This seems not very ergonomic to me...

It's not, but at least for my left hand it isn't so bad that it's a problem and I got used to it quickly. My forefinger curls nicely around the thumb ridge. My Your own personal ergonomic mileage may vary.

Cool setup!

I only have one T1600 so I use KB + T1600 and those "Shift keys" gave me an awesome idea. My question is, who did you setup 2 "shift" keys?
Am I missing some configuration option on Elite or the T1600 or its just key combinations, like Shift 1 is shift plus keys and shift 2 is Alt plus keys?

That's pretty much it, yeah. Just taking advantage of the fact that E:D lets you bind button or key combos to multiplex.

yeah just use alt or ctrl or even combos of those too. I use a T1600, but with a CH pro throttle, I have 3 buttons on the throttle handle and I use these as shift keys for all the buttons on my T1600 - this gives me seven shift keys basically as I can combine the 3 in different ways (ED allows binding multiple button presses which is great).

Federal Dropship requires Ensign, so can't be any lower. I'd expect at least Lt. Commander if not Post Commander.

Great news..that means by current rate of rank progression, I should get one before my 40th birthday
Before I wanted to rank up, I got to Ensign by accident really, doing things like delivering data to a station in the same system..wow, I sure had the right stuff for the Federal Navy!..nobody could deliver data from one station to another like me!
One more thing, if I included missions that should have activated a promotion, but didn't, due to bugs..Zachary Hudson would be saluting me and bringing me my mail (post commander? anybody?)!
