What to do about Griefers

It's quite simple. OP broke the laws governing the Elite universe and got penalized for it. The outcome would have been the same if the "rammer" was an NPC or even an Ai-ASP, nobody thinks on the poor NPC's feelings. If you feel you need to speed around stations (I do) or break the laws of Elite don't complain if the Elite police puts you in jail.

Threats like this one are the reason I played the majority of my time in Elite in Solo or PG. The griefers are everywhere and you get killed for no reason as soon as you log in. That was my understanding from just reading the forums. Nothing is further from the truth.

I build a few cheap, small ships with enhanced thrusters and some hrps and went on an adventure in the scary open mode. It was and is the most fun I had in Elite, lots of interactions with lawfuls, outlaws, pirates, griefers, AX, CMDRs just doing their thing, and everyone in between. The only bad experience I had was with some people of a supposedly lawful group. It reminded me of Call of Duty on X-Box.
For anybody on the fence as I was about open, built a small fast ship and go on an adventure, learn to recognize danger, to evade and escape interdictions, maybe even take part in a PvP boot camp. The PvP guys are the most helpful people I met in Elite. Then you can decide which mode is the best for you. I chose open.

Something you seem unaware of - If they weren't speeding when being rammed nothing would happen to them, sure it's annoying but thats the beauty of open play, many diferent experiences some you'll like, some you wont. I am trying to help by pointing out how to survive whilst in open play, but it's quite obvious people don't want to learn about how open play works and how to survive after the beginner mode that is solo or pg, instead... exploit, block.
Curious that you are collecting insults, then retort with an implied denigration yourself, well done :)

No, it's a mechanic you don't like. Which is perfectly valid, but that doesn't make it broken.

I hope you'll understand that I'll not see this as a compelling argument.

Maybe Power Play needs to change rather than the design philosophy of the game.

Likewise, if you would like me to educate you on the game, PM me.

K.

I had pretty much the exact same things to say - then my phone did something screwy and you beat me to it before I could fix it - with a little bit about not knowing fire was hot until sticking one's hand into it, and a bit about being pretty certain that Power Aligned NPC's exist for exactly this reason. Sure, they might not put up as much of a fight, but that's not the point.

Who cares nowadays? Even Rick isn't broke anymore...
It's a stupid decision by FD, on the other hand people with a modicum of self-respect won't do it anyways, and the others have you (and me propably) on their block list 😂

Oh, I know I'm on some blocklists. Had a few random people add me when DW2 ended.

Currently having a nice conversation with a couple randoms I met in a CZ. Glad those other folks saved themselves from that. I can be quite verbose.

They definitely are both helpful and knowledgeable, they are not griefers though. The griefers are neither of those things.

I understand what you are saying, but for many people PvPers and griefers are one and the same.
People call anybody who doesn't play by their interpretation of the rules in open a griefer. I was called a griefer and words I can't write in this forum, even if a man working 20 years in a sawmill could count my PvP wins on one hand. But I still have a positive KtD ratio :)
The whole point is: Open is not scary if some common sense is applied and it's a fun place to be with some downs but mostly ups, at least from my experience.

I don't condone station ramming or the CMDRs doing it, but it's allowed by FD. So snail pace it is, or I life dangerous and could end up in an ED jail.

Some advice from the heart :

Never, Ever fly above 100 around Jameson!

And keep your eye open for other players outside the station!

Heat sinks will appear as white markers should also be kept an eye on as it could mean a CMDR is silent running.

Keep your wits about you, be smart and FLY OPEN!
(admittedly sometimes when interdictors are too heavy you may not have a choice but to quit to solo to get to Jameson, but at least give it a few tries!)

Learn how to avoid the Gank! There are some great videos out there, here is one by Rinzler o7o7o7:

, here is one from Dezpe :

However, I cannot promise you will not succumb from time to time. There are Grom rockets which will stop you from engaging your FSD for 17 seconds, and even experienced CMDRs with fully engineered exploration/taxi ships will get successfully ganked from time to time, especially against multiple opponents. Learn to accept this, it is part of the game.

IF it is happening to you every single time, then something is definitely wrong and you need to up your ship and/or up your game.

IF the problem is skillset, then the above videos will REALLY help you out, especially TURN TOWARDS YOUR OPPONENT and KEEP 4 PIPs to SHIELDS! Do not run away in a straight line. Minimize his time on target against you. FA Off is going to be Super Helpful( and I cannot stress this enough ) when flying evasively, but that is an advanced lesson for another day.

Here are some builds which are successful and can help you:

Mining Type 9 : https://s.orbis.zone/4mmc and mine was not as fully engineered as this.
Exploration/Taxi Conda : https://s.orbis.zone/4mme , those Class E shield boosters are really your friend, do not underestimate their usefulness
Exploration/Taxi Krait Phantom: https://s.orbis.zone/1n1j (this is pretty squishy but does 586 which will be faster than any ganker ship(possibly excepting the Mamba), you need to be on your game with evasion if you use this type of ship(see Dezpe's video above).

IF you have a friend, then practice these maneuvers with them.

Signing off,

I've just been killed by a Griefer and I was sent to jail for trying to run away and breaking the speed limit outside Jameson, whilst he was ramming me?!

I've see them daily now, why do the space police not do anything about it? Are there no consequences for a griefer other than pay a fine? Is there no permanent outlaw status, where all police hunt you down after so many kills outside a space station?

I can't believe this is the way the game is intended, to have effectively immortal psychopaths running around.

Is my only option to go on a private server?

WTH were you doing playing in Open then? You can't complain on here if you insist on playing in Open. Play in either Solo or dedicated PG like Moebius F F S.

While I don't care for PvP, it's sanctioned game play just like PvE and perfectly legit in Open. But I draw the line on ganking. Especially if it involves asymmetrical PvP like a full engineered ganker ship v. a tin foil Asp X build (deliberate bullying). Or a PvE trader who just spent hours of hard work mining. And was minding his own business observing the PvE rules of the game (which NPCs observe) waiting in the space station's docking queue. When a griefer decided to commit murder-suicide by flying a cheap Sidey before the miner's T9. Just as they get the green light to navigate into the mail slot.

The only type of ganking worse than that is killing a Fuel Rat. That should NEVER be allowed and should result in an immediate permaban. Because it's completely unrealistic from the context of the game. You don't suicide bomb an ambulance that's racing to help ppl in real life. If you do, then the penalties and consequences from society are severe and extreme. There are rules of engagement in modern warfare which make the premeditated murder of non combat individuals (like unarmed civilians, children, medical and religious personnel etc.) taboo. So the rationale for doing this is completely illogical. There is nothing to be gained in terms of monetary gain by either party from the encounter. So WTH do something similar in a sandbox game, when the worst of the lawless/criminal and pirate NPCs don't behave like that?

IMO FDev really needs to overhaul the crime and punishment system for PvP in Open. Like making the ganker(s) personally accountable for their victim's ship rebuy cost. So if 2 gankers murder hobo a hapless FR, then EACH of them is penalized with the cost of a single ship rebuy.

The system would automatically deduct the cost of the FR rebuy from the ganker's credits. So the FR gets their ship back for free PLUS a bonus set of credits equal to the cost of his ship value. Rinse and repeat penalty for each additional ganker i.e. 3 gankers = 3 ship rebuy costs gifted to the FR victim commander etc. That would halt 99.999% of any type of that sort of griefer tomf*ckery going on in Open.

And oh yes: if the ganker can't afford a ship rebuy, the system will automatically sell their engineered ship and/or as many ships in their fleet to compensate the victim. And if they still fall short by doing that then the system will automatically reimburse the FR the credits. Then get reimubursed by the ganker, by confining them to flying a starter Sidewinder and doing non combat missions (hauling cargo, passengers etc) They can't participate in PP or any other combat missions like espionage on NPC facilities etc.

They're basically restricted to serving their time in PvE purgatory doing PvE missions they hate. Until they've made enough credits/Arx to payoff what they still owe on their victim's ship rebuy. :ROFLMAO:

Regardless, great war story. Move on and use that failure state as a learning experience for your next adventure into the black.

You break the speed limit and die block it!, block all pirates, block all powerplay engagements, someone interdicts you, block them, block them all, this can't possibly backfire can it :D
It actually makes for an enjoyable Open experience. Everyone gets one shot to pirate you. Since real cops don't exist in this universe, get the universe to conform to your wishes. I'd say it's a clever use of game mechanics. Hmm, where have I seen that phrase before...?

NO! Join GARD, we will train you to appreciate their value to the game, and engage them in honorable combat. o7
I really appreciate the presence of GARD, and with central servers supporting large instances, I think a self-policing ecology would be possible. Societies work because there are more law abiders than not. In a p2p system with snare, cripple and burst mechanics being designed for the win - I just don't see self-policing as viable as it could be.
