Are we there yet?
More will be revealed about it later, and you can decide if mining is for you. It will certainly have some good purposes, of that I can assure you, but whether that's what you envisioned and what you like, I can't say just yet. Hang on for now and don't completely rule it out![]()
I reality, other than mat extraction (so other explorers who are present can scoop it up; I myself will not be bronging a mining laser), what is being proposed here would be more properly called prospecting. From what I saw in the update recap, there will need to be some level of interaction with the rings in normalspace to fully establish their makeup so that info can be fed to eddb/edsm/inara/etc.How do you expect mining to be useful for explorers?
I've seen some of the upcoming changes but being able to mine more, faster doesn't seem to be any advantage to exploration.
Once your cargo hold is full of ore, you're jump range is reduced and you have no place to sell it…
I find this implausible. There are so many systems much closer to the bubble that can be prospected. Shipping ore from ring systems on the far side of the galaxy couldn't possibly be cost effective compared to the vast number of unexploited systems within a hundred light years of the bubble.... for CMDRs in the 34th century, this is literally the most important aspect of the journey, and the only reason it would ever get bankrolled.
Carriers were always considered a bonus and nothing on DW2 fully depended on their inclusion or not. What the early proposals and discussions were about was to explore ideas on how expeditionary events could incorporate practical reasons to include the fantastic new mining and prospecting gameplay on deep space events. Basically bringing more gameplay opportunities and a variety of new roles for people to enjoy along the way. But as been pointed out, one or two of the initial discussions turned out to be technically unfeasible. However we're very happy to say that deep space prospecting and the new mining gameplay will most definitely have some very practical roles to play during aspects of the expedition!

Think of it this way, the explorers are going to chart the the stars and planets and see what kind they are and if any are terraformable or not. The Miners are going out to prospect for minerals which will others whether any of those terraformable planets found would be worth settling in due to having either plenty of resources in the system or in nearby systems or both.
As it already says in the OP, the DW2-Expedition will be the first big expedition that tests the new mechanics ...
True. One of my concerns is how much slower traveling with the new mechanics will be. I'm just hoping I can keep up with the expedition and not fall behind.

No rules saying you have to scan everything (or anything) in the system if you're in a hurry.True. One of my concerns is how much slower traveling with the new mechanics will be. I'm just hoping I can keep up with the expedition and not fall behind.
I know it was probably said, but since I can’t find it I’ll ask. What system are we starting off at?
