Cosmos,

My understanding of what palmer is speaking about re latency is the head tracking to the image update. This should not be presented as blurring, but a tiny delay in the image update. The tracking sensor they are currently working on has a latency of 2ms ( 1/500th of a second ).
This is the lag between head movement and the game engine receiving the movement.

My understanding, this is similar to the lag of a gaming mouse. I could see the larger FOV in the Oculus increasing your perception of the lag however.

As soon as the consumer version is available, I will be getting it one way or another as I know Hawken and Star Citizen can use it.

After reading this I am beginning to wonder if it is too hard to add into E: D :(

I seriously thought about the Dev version, but in the end decided to wait for the commercial - it'll be better refined and hopefully we'll have a clearer idea of the games that will support it (ED included).

Star citizen plans to support it, so it will likely be a wise investment... but yes I too am waiting for the full retail item... I have no desire to spend hours and hours in about with it...

To me is it a gimicky thingmy and as a result.. I have no application for it bar supported games... and maybe using it once myself.. lol.. hopefully though it will be amazing.. and I'll get hooked..

But i'll sit patiently and see..

My rift arrived today!

First impressions are "Whoooaaaaaaa!". The FOV is great, the optics adjustment are pretty good but it does take a bit of fiddling to get it comfy on your head.

What I didn't anticipate is the amount of motion sickness I've experienced on some of the demos. Tuscany isn't too bad, Blue Marble is fine, but Museum of the Microwhatsit is barf inducing for me currently.

The resolution definately needs to go up before a consumer release.

But its certainly a fantastic experience. I'm looking to pick up a Zeiss Cinemizer, and see if I can get a go of a Sony T2, but they're only 30/45 degrees FOV.

Adding Oculus support to Unity is trivial, and I've been running around a landscape I created in about 10 minutes without issue. Skyboxes don't work very well unless you use the Tuscany one, and the biggest thing is scale - adding default grass in Unity makes it look about a meter high, although trees scale quite well.

Anybody else had their Rift come through the letterbox. I'm sure there's lots of people out there like me who aren't developers but are very very interested in this kit.

Is the screendoor effect as bad as suggested on the kickstarter page?

When did you pledge/order yours? Did it go through customs? I read in an email from them they have a European distribution centre now so was hoping to avoid customs! ;)

Mine hasn't even shipped yet. :(

I was order #7343 or there abouts - pledged on the 17th August 2012. No customs - just turned up. Spent 5 days in a UPS warehouse, but that's because being up North in Scotland, couriers routinely add an extra day shipping, and as it was a business address, they only put it out of delivery in office hours (i.e. skipped the weekend).

I take it that you're too young to have owned a Viewmaster?

CLICK next picture... OH its superman..yay.... CLICK wonderwoman yay CLICK spiderman yay CLICK CLICK CLICK..ZZZZzzzz

The thing was them pictures weren't warm after 25 minutes unless you walked into the oven while using it without noticing..

:D I just wonder about the brightness and heat from the screens?

Sorry, most people's concerns about the closeness of the screen focus on the optics.

The problem is that you wouldn't be able to tell if it's an issue from the development kit. The higher rez screens might produce more heat.

I was kinda hoping that the sweat on my brow after using these things would be due to the excitement.

hmm it comes with optics... wow... I have placed an order.

I have issues with games like DOOM3 etc with the wobble when you walk, it makes me very nauseous and I have to stop and sit down and close my eyes..

I get this watching the game being played too if I watch for +15 minutes at one time and it puts me off the game. It really leaves me feeling unwell..

So a few games + me = not playing...

Space sims do not have this issue... though I accept that if the cockpit is 3d and moving... I may not be able to play Elite for more than 15 mins in a run... time will tell..

I REALLY want an Oculus Rift... but I fear its not for me.. I will not like the heat to eye, or the close focus.. or the weight on my neck..

I think a more developed version may be worth waiting for to me...
