I have issues with games like DOOM3 etc with the wobble when you walk, it makes me very nauseous and I have to stop and sit down and close my eyes..

A lot of those games you can turn off head bob and weapon weave via some console command, and/or in the config files.

Hm. I have to wear glasses for normal vision.. So Oculus by definition isn't really suited for me.. I'll stick with my desktop/laptop monitors :)

The kit has several sets of optics for just that reason. If you read any of the Oculus bumf you'd know that they aim to make it decent for people with glasses, pointing out that a significant portion of their own team wear glasses!

A. Scott Reisse, founder of Oculus VR, the firm behind the Oculus Rift, just leave us

The Oculus Rift, the virtual reality helmet developed by the company Oculus VR, has lost one of his fathers when he has not yet hit the market. Andrew Scott Reisse, co-founder of the firm, has indeed died at the age of 33, hit by a reckless driver while being pursued by police in downtown Santa Ana, a city of Greater Los Angeles, between Irvine and Anaheim.

Although he lost one of its creators, work will continue on the Oculus Rift, and $ 2.5 million invested by users via Kickstarter will not be lost.

There are 3 sets of lenses included with the rift - A, B & C - the lenses are actually identical, but it's the height of the cup they're mounted in which allows for the adjustment.

A is pretty much 0 diopter, B is about -1.00 as far as I can tell, and C is about -3.00.

I'm -1.25 in both eyes, and with glasses/contacts on, the As are best. But I get ok results with the with no contacts also. The C's don't do it for me.

Depending on your glasses, they will fit inside the rift body - the foam around the sides holds them in place and it's not too uncomfortable, although that would depend on the frame you have (I have very thin framed Oakleys).

So depending on your prescription you might get away with just B or C, but contacts are definitely the way to go if you already wear them.

A possible new home for the Rift

PS4

"Sony Computer Entertainment head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida is a big Oculus Rift fan, it turns out. "We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," he told us in an interview this morning at E3 2013. Whether the PlayStation 4 will support it is another question. "No, it doesn't," Yoshida told us. Not yet, that is.

When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile. The picture of the retail Oculus Rift is potentially a bit clearer now, especially given this week's addition of an HD version of the headset. We'll be sure to keep on Sony about Oculus support on the PlayStation 4 as the year goes on"

Decent funding boost for Oculus - http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielnyegriffiths/2013/06/17/oculus-vr-close-16m-funding-round-oculus-rift/

After having spent some time with my Dev Kit I can firmly (IMHO) state that VR will definitely be the next big thing in gaming - it's seriously so much better than everything up to now - higher resolutions, 3D, multi-monitor - they all pale next to this! Seriously!

Now I'm not a blind fanboi - there is plenty of work to do. The Dev Kit's resolution is not good enough, but that's always been stated by the company itself. The screen door effect is also pretty bad. Both of these have been addressed in their new prototype and that won't even be the end of the road. Positional tracking (while not essential) would also be a major addition as I have found me leaning in to look at things, peek around corners, etc.

With reference to Elite - I really hope they look into this (hell, I'll lend them my Rift if they don't have one!) Star Citizen have already said they will support it. Support is not THAT difficult. If the consumer unit comes out around the time of the games it could easily push players one way or the other. There's a (pretty rough) space game demo called First law that gives a brief glimpse at how good a space sim will be - looking around your cockpit, and out of the windows is amazing. I'd love to try CCP's EVR demo as a professionally produced game demo I can only imagine how much better even that is. And my favourite demo (Titans of Space) also points to how good this thing will be for space sims.

On the nausea issue - it affected me in FPS type games/demos but not in things where I was in a vehicle... well, apart from the rollercoaster one... I was standing up and nearly fell over! :p Even then, after a few sessions that effect lessened as I got used to it.

I have heard an issue for sickness is game cutscenes. You cant move or look around but the image moves everywhere.
My idea for that is to drop the user in the virtual cinema, so the cutscene plays on a flat screen at the end of the virtual room you are in.

Yes, cutscenes (or even watching Oculus videos on Youtube) are a bit jarring and do not help nausea!

Another weird one for me was when playing Half Life 2... when the game pauses to do some loading I have to keep my head REALLY still as it feels all wrong to move my head and the static image moves with it!

Over time, games will be designed with this sort of thing in mind though.

I'm really looking forward to my first Rift experience, whenever it may be. Hopefully they'll get the investment they need, not only for positional tracking, but maybe even a custom display. Elite should be really quite awe-inspiring in VR.

News just in from Korea/Japan inside sources of a 6" display being available in 2014 with 2560 x 1600 and 500ppi.
LG Display, Japan Display, and Sharp are working on getting this product out, and use Advanced high performance-In plane switching or AH-IPS to achieve it, whatever that is.
This is perhaps what the Rift has been waiting for.

They did just get $16m! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game/posts/512945

I guess that's peanuts in the big bad world of electronics but they did a fair amount with the Kickstarter cash so here's hoping that either gets them to consumer stage or gets them to a stage where they get another cash injection. I really hope they don't get bought, or that the Sonys and Samsungs see the potential and outgun them... they kind of deserve their (potential) success.

As VR grows (and it will, I'm sure) they'll move from making do with the best available mobile phone screen to getting made-for-VR screens. 4K in each eye? I can only imagine, but it will happen sometime!

Yeah, sorry. I did read that article, but didn't put much effort into my post... I doubt that money will get them the ideal screen made bespoke, but it should hopefully mean they can get everything else like the positional tracking sorted.

would like to try the Rift myself, but I guess that after 10 mins I will start to feel nauseous. one game always sets me off and that's Doom running at stupid frames per second on my PC. also watching a 3D movie after a few drinks set me off.
