ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

I do not know if ED support oculus rift. But I know that I not will wear something like that for hours on my face, especially with summer approaching (2014 of course). In addition, I will ask myself, if may I come again to reality. Excessive immersion in the game certainly. Otherwise it is great that system. But what horror of having to put this headset.

:)

I get a headache after wearing my headphones after a few hours, I imagine that there will be some serious neck ache after wearing the rift for any long period.

would like to try the Rift myself, but I guess that after 10 mins I will start to feel nauseous. one game always sets me off and that's Doom running at stupid frames per second on my PC. also watching a 3D movie after a few drinks set me off.

I'm guessing you'd be prone then... those things don't set me off at all but the Rift has! I do get sick if I read in a car, or on boats, so I am not oblivious to motion sickness... it's not like the Rift has brought out something that wasn't there.

Honestly though, after a few sessions it calms down - I guess it's like finding your sea legs! I wouldn't write it off after one try - when it gets to consumer stage it's going to be huge, it really is that good, and if you can get used to it it'll be worth it.

Apparently when CCP created their EVR demo/game they designed motion sickness out of it... not sure how they managed that!

It's surprisingly light actually... like 350g. In comparison I weighed my motorbike helmet and it's 1.4kg, can be worn all day and get buffeted by wind into the bargain with nary a neck concern.

I suspect they'll lighten it further anyway. :)

From the Kickstarter:

Can you release “Elite: Dangerous” on the (iPhone/iPad/Console/Mac/Linux/Oculus Rift/Raspberry Pi) platform?

Yes. It would be great. The PC version comes first though, and then we will look at the demand for other platforms. If the game exceeds its target, then there will be scope to increase the number of platforms. We will discuss with the backers in the design discussion forum, and how to address the issues that will arise, but I have every hope that we will cover some or all of these platforms.

iPhone/iPad/Console/Mac/Linux/Oculus Rift/Raspberry Pi

It's a bit strange to group it in with that lot as those are all platform/OS related, where Oculus is just a display device.

Technical integration is fairly trivial, but game/graphics design might not be as you need to think about things that just aren't relevant in other display devices. Having said that I've been happily playing Half Life 2 on it no bother.

You may have noticed my posts highlighting the design issues in the DDF... It's good that they seem to be putting displays in-game as part of the cockpit, rather than a HUD that moves with the camera, as that's going to make Rift integration somewhat easier. I really hope they get a dev kit to play around with, just so that they're aware of the what works and what doesn't.

Both ways work really well to be honest. A HUD overlay and fixed cockpits. It's actually really cool having a semi-transparent HUD floating a couple of feet away from you that moves as you do. Both have their place I think.

Okay, I was under the impression that HUDs have to be fairly central to the screen, though, otherwise they're always in your peripheral vision. You couldn't use Frontier's panel along the bottom of the screen method.

To a degree. In an ideal world, they'd be movable, sizeable, colourisable and transparencisable! ;) Might have invented words there.

VR Headset just seems so odd with Elite. We're sitting in a space ship. We dont stick our heads out in space or walk around in a space suit.

I would like to see 3D support so we can look through a 'window'. 3D adds amazing feeling of depth thats true.

As someone returning to PC gaming the Rift thing passed me by. How popular is it because my impression was that it was more of a niche market but I could be totally wrong, I frequently am

:S The Rift is, by design, 3D, only WAY better than 3D Tvs/monitors.

I have no idea why you think a VR headset for Elite would be "odd" - it basically replicates the real world ability to move your head and look everywhere! There is a space game/demo for it that is VERY basic, but looking around and above through the cockpit windows is awesome! With a consumer Rift and a proper game, this would be mind blowing!

It's not even a real product yet. There is a Developer Kit which a lot of people who aren't developers (like me) bought. The consumer unit will be a lot better but it's already making waves as is.

The Oculus Rift is very much a niche thing. Its supporters are just pretty excited and vocal about it, that's all. The technology is nowhere near mature.

"Its supporters" equates to pretty much everyone who's ever tried it! :p

The tech is not there with the developer kit, it's true... but it needs very little to get to first stage consumer unit - basically a higher resolution screen with less "screen door" effect... and guess what they showed at E3? ;) It's not THAT far away.

OR have had to raise another $16 million to get the device to market so it sounds like they are still some way further to go and it looks like the KS money must had all been spent just getting to the dev kit stage.

They're basically following the typical Silcon Valley start-up model. The Kickstarter stood in for 'angel' investors, who take a punt to get the prototypes to a stage where bigger investment can be sought. They've now done their Series A funding round, which generally sees between 20% and 40% of shares in the company sold, usually netting $2-10m. The fact they've raised $16m is quite impressive. Usually there'll be a Round B after about a year, so it will be interesting to see whether that will be the case for OR.

At any rate, their business is looking pretty solid, which is backed by the incredibly positive feedback even the basic prototype has been getting from industry and potential users. It won't be long before it becomes a fairly major product, in my opinion.

Oculus Rift support in ED would be absolutely gobsmack fantastic!

The device has recently been shown in a prototype HD version, and everyone who's tried it was amazed. And those were people who used VR headsets and video goggles in the past.

I'm an avid FPV RC pilot and I wholeheartedly vote for Oculus support in ED. Nobody is forced to buy a device, but if they have one...

oh boy... just imagine looking around in the ship's cockpit while you dock at the station, or enjoy amazing situational awareness during battle. That would be frigging awesome.

I just realise I've been experiencing this game much different than all above you!

When playing Elite I never imagined using a cockpit. I always fantasized ships would be using some screens like in Star Trek. Being able to walk around in your ship and stand over-viewing possible screens by selecting and switching.

It fits the playstyle since sometimes you had to read a book time passing while flying ;) When someone pops on radar i'd say 'on screen!' and sit behind joystick haha

I would love to play this on a big screen 3D projector. The RIFT just doesn't 'match' my memories I had when I was a kid :)
