I would love to play this on a big screen 3D projector. The RIFT just doesn't 'match' my memories I had when I was a kid :)

Au contraire! :D

The Rift could be used to match your memories much better than a big 3D screen as it could also replicate the entire bridge/cockpit for you INCLUDING the big screen! :p There is already a "virtual cinema" app in development that shows this potential (having a huge screen a la Star Trek AND simulated environment around that).

Nevah!! I was planning to rebuild my old bedroom to get that feeling back :)

Just kidding, what youre saying is awesome :)

Still your are underestimating our imagination we once had when videogames were not so detailed in graphics ;)

Oculus Rift is perfect for simulators. In real time shooters you move your feet and hands much. Offcourse it cant be simulated yet. But in a cockpit you are stationary and use a keyboard and a stick. This will fell much more immersive. As you hold your hands on the stick and see the stick move in the cockpit. The only drawback must be that you cant see your keyboard which holds a lot of functions. So a stick with buttons could be the solution. But think about it, actually being inside a Cobra mk 3s cockpit and looking around. Awesome, its really potential here.

Yeah the Omni is pretty cool I have been watching the progress on that.
But it does kind of highlight why E: D won't work with Oculus VR.

In that it would work great in your cockpit but when you can get up and go EVA you would have to pause and jump on your Omni treadmill :p

It's just not going to work really is it?
Shame because I REALLY want VR in future games :(

Ha ha, you don't HAVE to get on an Omni! ;) Even playing FPS games with a gamepad or mouse/keyboard is more immersive with the Oculus! The Omni + Oculus is obviously trying to take it to another level but I'm way too lazy for that thing! :p

Yeah I know :p
But hypothetically speaking, it would be a little impractical :p

You know all those games, where you can only sprint in 3 second bursts? That's what playing with the Omni would be like... Also, what happens when you want to crouch/jump/climb a ladder/swim, etc. Great exercise machine, but not the ultimate VR solution by a long shot.

I like the idea where you can put people in an empty room, and by misdirecting them slightly, make it so they never walk into the walls. Not quite sure how that works though.

It's amusing to think that in the future, gamers might be ripped and fit individuals with bulging biceps and washboard abs from long hours spent exerting themselves in a VR rig. They might even look like the characters they play! They could be a bit pale though, but I'm sure we can fix that with a virtual environment simulator (sun lamps, air con and fan hooked up to activate when changing environments). :p

I guess I just don't understand how Oculus Rift is better than Track IR. It literally looks like Track IR with 3D thrown in for good measure.

Hated Track IR, so I'll probably pass on Oculus.

Erm... it doesn't use standard monitors sitting on your desk! Wherever you turn your head - 180 degrees behind, straight up, down, you see what's there - without keeping your eyes fixed on a static monitor! And it fills much more of your vision. It's very different.

I tried a potato once and didn't like it so never tried chips, crisps, mash, dauphinoise, etc... so I know where you're coming from though.

I'd never heard of Track IR until your post. I've just watched a video of it and it looks pretty neat to me. Sometimes these things look better on Youtube clips than they do when you play them. What was it that you didn't like about Track IR. Was it the lag?

Was it the fact that it doesn't fully replicate your actual movement. I tried a virtual reality headset last year and the owners of the kit had it set so that a 90 degree neck movement gives a 180 degree movement within the game. I can't help but feel that this must remove the immersion somewhat and it would be better to have a one to one mapping. If it's not done properly you'd just end up with a neck-controlled joystick.

But I must say... I love the idea of it. Imagine a Track IR that lived up to its promise. Imagine it with a gaming rig that could keep lag to a minimum, and imagine it with a massive 3D 4K telly. :D

I want that! And I want a 1080P Oculus Rift as well. I'm away to the shops to buy a lottery ticket.

Track IR is actually quite good at what it does, and I never noticed any lag. However, very few games outside of racing or flight sims supported it, which is why so few have heard of it. For me personally it was a pain to calibrate. Hard to describe to someone who hasn't used it, but getting it set-up and then recalibrating for every different game was something of a chore. Plus, sitting in a room with a funny blinking hat just struck me as too much.

Quite cool however! If you need something to play with before Oculus I'd reccomend Track IR and FreeTrack. Both offer some really awesome immersion for flight sims.

Going back to the Oculus, I've looked at it a bit more, and it does seem to be more then I'd given it credit for.

However, I wear glasses, and I havn't seen that addressed in any way, shape, or form. :\

They've been asked that lots of times and they always say that it's going to be addressed as a lot of their own team wear glasses!

For example, in the Dev Kit they actually include 3 sets of lenses that means some glasses wearers (at least) can get away with taking them off for the Rift. Some people just wear the unit over their specs - it has a spongy surround.

Question for Jabokai... Are you limited to looking straight forwards, and just moving your head to look around the environment, or can you look around just by moving your eyes?

Good to know! Basic google searches didn't show me anything. :D

I'll have to keep an eye on it, that being said, there just isn't enough money in the paycheck for all of these toys! Still need a new video card, plus power supply, and that is before I get to Elite Dangerous! (Which I need to jonty up again for. :p )

Yes. Unlike some have assumed it doesn't completely FILL your vision but definitely enough that you can move your eyes to see other areas of the display other than what's directly in front (copy and paste on the FOV specs - 90 degrees horizontal, 110 degrees diagonal).

I tried to simulate Track IR in my mind but I think it's not very natural for your brains to make a head-movement while your eyes focus-sing on one point (your screen).

It's a cool device though. Instead of being used in games it could be used to trigger people (or events) who have for example retardation (mentally and/or motoric).
