I am very much in favor of or against.
So, if the devs ARE going to provide a nerfed camera drone, what the hell is all the frank exchanging of views about?
There is one point I would like to make regarding realism, too much of it in a game tends to make the game very boring. There has to be a balance between realism and playability.
Personally I don't find an external view breaking the immersion since it has been a stapleware of spacesims since the beginning of the genre.
I'm all for external view. There are a lot of people out there that's salivating on the thought of making videos of ED showcasing battles and stunning vistas.
The proposal of using a camera drone is a good one, it doesn't break immersion and it solves the problem of unfair advantages in battle (ie. you can either pilot your ship or the drone, not both).
There are some games out there where you can record your sessions and later play them back with free-cam mode which is great for making videos. Don't know if that's possible in ED depending on how the client/server solution is done.
+1
Using drone camera
- Press button to launch
- Press button to toggle feed (ie : switch between cockpit and camera)
- While in camera drone mode : you get an audio alert if you are fired upon or ship proxi warning
- You can pilot camera drone to certain range, warning given, further range will result in lost comms and camera drone movement is disabled (but it might be possible to still receive images (aid recovery) from a greater range)
- Advanced cameras are available to allow infra-red etc (possibly ones which highlight mineral deposits etc)
- Camera drone can be piloted back to ship (creates data packet, which can be sold)
- If you toggle back to hud move ship, engage in combat etc then camera drone could be lost
- Able to screengrab, photo is sent back to ship (whether in cockpit mode or camera drone mode)
- Possibly only launch camera drone whilst stationary, although as above ship could be moved whilst launch
In regards to in-built footage camera, not sure FD need to include this... use fraps etc (less burden on game engine)
Logically....
If you answer yes, you are saying you are either for, or against.
If you answer no, your are saying you are neither for, nor against.
Make sense? :S
I love boolean algebra, it may make me a bit of a freak, but a logical freak![]()
So how exactly would a proposed (nerfed) external camera be used for advantage?ooh good another thread with loads of limitations considerations and excuses to allow a third person view.
Well ya know what?
You can get round all those daft artificial limitations and conditions by WAITING FOR THE OFFICIAL EVA EXPANSION!!!
If you want to see the outside of your ship then you'll have to get into a suit and get out and have a look at it with your pilots eyes.
Then you can get a lovely view of whatever you want to see. If you choose to get out when there's a battle raging that's just fine by me.
i can't see any reason why anyone would have a problem with this IF they they are only planning on using this view for sightseeing.
Of course if you had a plan for bending the rules and getting an unfair advantage then you might not like the idea of having to get out of your ship....
That would be an ideal sort of solution. But what a lot of people will question is how this external view wouldn't be abused during combat? eg: A superior FOV or rear view?
Indeed...
But its impossible to pilot your ship and control the camera drone at the same time... the camera can not be stuck to the back of ship (you could place it there, but if your ship moves then camera is left where it is)...
...in you move out of range of your camera drone then it results in movement control being lost, but you might be possible to still see images - up to a slightly further range to allow you to work out where it is to get back in range.
seems like a lot of work just for me to be able to see how nice my ship looks on a Sunday afternoon whilst approaching Lave spaceport.

I am totally against a 3rd person view (like the previous Freelancer image), agreeing with FD that it breaks realism and connection with your ship...
... but I think controllable drones (not just camera) which collect data could be useful for different careers paths... so the code could be used in a variety of ways.
