The DC could alleviate the long time of docking, by allowing access to the stations commodity screen during the docking procedure.

Maybe you cant buy anything while your docking, but you can use the time to plan the next trade trip?

Just a thought?

(Disclaimer - I still damn to hell the people using the DC!) :p

The docking computer has not been working well for me at all. I almost always have to interrupt it and get it to start over, or just take over and fly in manually after it spent several minutes just rotating in place outside the docking slot, though I do appreciate the extra time to listen to the music. Can we have it as an option to hear it while we are docking manually too?:D

+1 That's exactly what my DC did too. I never was able to dock once with the DC it always failed.. so I am surprised to read it worked for others.

And exactly my wish too would like to be able to activate the docking music on manual docking.

o whale.

For me, the docking computer is a godsend. Sure, I can dock perfectly easily, and I enjoy the process as well as the feeling of landing the ship. But it's been working perfectly fine for me. Sure, it likes to spazz and get confused whenever I tell it to get into the space station, but it gets the job done. Plus it manuevers around any AI's that are derping around the docking bay entrance anyway. I personally love the fact that I can just go do something else while it fumbles its way to the landing pad. So, I think its definitely a keeper - especially with blue danube playing. Although, it would be cool to turn it off or on if it screws up; it sometimes likes to just kinda fly me away from the station.

My only complaint with it is lack of external view when it kicks in!
I'd love to sit back, listen to smooth tunes and watch my ship dock itself!

Personally I do not care for the docking computer in its' current form. Seeing a Lakon 9 doing pirouettes right in front of the entrance is a tad disconcerting when trying to exit. Granted, there is some slight satisfaction on hearing the resounding thrump and boom from said ship when 5km from the station...

i had to remove the docking computer from my type 6, everytime it ended up getting itself stuck on the dock and turning into a bouncing ball, nearly lost my type 6 on 4 occasions one after the other, so i removed it,

it worked fine on the cobra and the hauler though

I Hate the thing , last night after getting a viper mine decided to ram me in to the space station as it was trying to dock and wiped out the ship i'd only used for 2 jumps :(

Purchased a docking computer early on with this beta just to hear the music.
Have yet to see any issue with it.

It takes a lot longer to land than manual docking, thus rewarding the effort of a pilot that relies on skill.

When it was in the Cobra MKIII touchdown was very smooth all other ships have been quite clumsy in comparison.

That said I am playing in Online Solo mode so I guess the AI routine has a more predictable environment to work in.

Modules, landing gear, docking computer

Modules : I'm pretty sure ED have a bunch of modules for our ships in mind but it is, to me and my friends, important to have a large choice of these spaceship's upgrades. I'm not necessary talking about useful ones. It could be a module to be able to polarize lenses ("surface of the sun" music playing), another one to activate cockpit armed shutters to resist to extreme heat and so on ...

Landing gears : Docking at stations is fine but landing lacks of immersion. You presently don't feel the "shock" of the landing gears when you hit the ground.

Docking Computer : I like you Mr D.Braben and the 2001 space odissey too ;)
Well, variants of Docking Computer are needed. Still presently when we arrive by station directly from the jump, we cannot see which side the entrance of the station is. It could be usefull to add this feature to the "Docking Computer II". It could bring from the hud an holo landing tunnel or as the 84' Elite, put a road of some strong blinking green lights.

Last, but not least : Players are always looking for something to upgrade when they are playing a character, piloting a car or a spaceship. I could spend myself credits to upgrade for a better Ship front Light module if I had to mine an asteroid from the dark side ... give us a ton of modules and upgrades.

Personally, I can dock quicker and smoother than the computer....bought it to try it out, used it once, sold it. It bought me down on the pad so hard cost me 10% hull damage!

Why it has to turn at that weird angle and go **** in towards the pad is beyond me!

Fitted it, flew to system, approached station, shouted "yay!" at the Blue Danube, saw that it actually takes about 5 times longer than it takes me to dock manually, sold it. It also tries to actually AVOID other ships when I'm piloting a Lakon 9. The computer doesn't seem to realise that anything smaller than a Lakon 6 can just be RAMMED out of the way. ;)

sure it takes a while, that's the whole idea as it gives you more incentive to learn to dock. it is a nice convenience though, and if you're playing after a few beers it can be a life saver! :)

one thing i would say though is it needs to read the radar a little better, i've bumped other ships a number of times when they could have easily been avoided.

Docking with windy and eagle

Pros: I't gets the job done...(I'm lazy)
The music
I get to sit back and watch the traffic
I get to sit back and watch people get in trouble with the law for loitering.

Con: Horrible motion-sickness inducing flight characteristics.
Belly-flops onto the landing pad with impunity.
Cant be switched of mid-flight.
Takes it's sweet bloody time. (I can live with that)

conclusion:

Is it a keeper?: yeah
Does it need improvement?: hell yeah

Apologies, but tl;dr

What's the experience with larger ships? Any risk of losing your vehicle if you're using a docking computer? Are the annoyances just annoyances, or can it go catastrophically wrong? Thinking of having a play with one in the Type 6.

Can you disable docking computer?

Apologies if this is obvious, I can't find the option in the key assignments. Having bought a docking computer after around thee hours of gameplay, on its second dock, it decided to throttle up and bury me in the back wall of the station. Lost ship, around 6000 in cargo and went from 23k credits down to just 6k when I renewed ship, for some reason. Baffled.

I could see what was going to happen, but if couldn't take over, or reduce speed.

I think like cruise control if you move the throttle outside of the 'low' range that the docking computer demands it returns control to you

Same thing happened to me last night (around 18:00GMT) but I haven't even a docking computer fitted so wondered if it was lag.

I read somewhere that just by decelerating / accelerating it disabled the auto pilot, if that helps...

Not sure I will be getting one after seeing all the ships sat loitering in the station letterbox though - maybe just to test but probably not in full release.

On the right-hand panel under the Functions tab (I think), the DC is listed. To switch it off I select it then press the (green) select button on the gamepad I'm currently using.
