Have to say after using it for a while its now permenantly "off". Perhaps it works well for other ships but the Lakon 6 and the docking computer don't mix. Its slow, confused and crashes into the pad every single time - sometimes not even docking properly... lets hope it works better for the Lakon 9.

Edit: After the docking computer turned on somewhow and rammed me into the station leaving me with 23% hull after "taking over" and making a complete hash of it.... its sold for scrap - good riddance.

I've used the docking computer from hauler, cobra, to type 6, on every trade run from 20k to 1.5m credits, and it has never crashed me into anything. When laden with cargo this is my preferred method of docking because of the reliability.

I park the ship in front of the entrance before engaging though, never tried making it steer around the station.

Docking is a skill and a part of the immersion IMHO. It will be such a shame if all you need to do when getting near a spaceport is to press a button to dock and land. It's almost as bad as a cut sequence. I was hoping that docking computers would be such a stupid price to install and also cost a fortune to use that anyone with sense would learn to fly. Only exception being docking assist for the larger ships giving you clearance information going through the slot etc.

As it happens, I can dock a Lakon 9 with my eyes shut (almost) but as the type 9 is slow and ponderous, I like having the choice to use the DC.

Well, it completely crashed my Type 6 yesterday so I won't use it again... also it takes like 10x the time I need to dock manually.

Docking computer just crashed my ship on me

Hey

I was playing for a few hours and made enough money to buy a docking computer but the first time I used it, it crashed my ship into the side of a space station! I didn't have enough credits left to afford my old ship, so back to the beginning again.

Feeling a bit peeved about this

Welcome to the fourms... finally!

This has been talked about quite a bit on here. I'd recommended checking out many of the other threads so some other existing thing doesn't jump up and bite ya!

Docking computer is just plainly USELESS! It takes like 10 times longer than yourself to dock and even tends to crash your ship!

I have only been playing about a week but the docking computer does have it's uses and can be used flawlessly IF you engage it right. Align you ship with the docking slot about 6km out try to have it aligned as close to centre as you can and never engage it closer than 2km from the station.
That being said type-9 and Anaconda's will nearly always scrape the docking port you much better off knowing how to dock manually it saves the nerves. One advantage is you'll never get fined/fired on for blocking the docking port in high traffic stations. worst part of docking computer landings is the spiral for no reason that occasional happens not fun to watch when low on funds as you have every thing invested in your cargo although mine has never crashed the ship.

Fly Safe
Commander D.MAC out.

I tried the docking computer once, but it did not appear to do anything so I sold it. Besides, docking is actually one of the few enjoyable aspects of the game.

The dev's should have created an autopilot for interstellar travel. You know, just like the autopilot from the games we played 20 years ago. It sure was nice to lock in a destination, hit autopilot, then watch the wonder of the galaxy flash by your canopy.

Now in 2014, it is the never ending frustration and confusion of juggling speed vs distance, and the inevitable overshooting or undercutting while trying to find the most effective trajectory.

I remember the original docking computer on the C64 used to regularly try to dock you through the back of the Coriolis stations, which could be really frustrating if you's just earned a pile of bounties in the system...
Might be nice to re-introduce some of the old quirks :)

Docking computer needs some love

Just installed a docking computer and it's really really slow docking. As is, it's not something I'd consider, even for bigger ships like the Lakon 9 and the Anaconda (these can be landed very easily now).
